Accurate estimation of retinal vessel width using bagged decision trees and an extended multiresolution Hermite model.

2012

We present an algorithm estimating the width of retinal vessels in fundus camera images. The algorithm uses a novel parametric surface model of the cross-sectional intensities of vessels, and ensembles of bagged decision trees to estimate the local width from the parameters of the best-fit surface. We report comparative tests with REVIEW, currently the public database of reference for retinal width estimation, containing 16 images with 193 annotated vessel segments and 5066 profile points annotated manually by three independent experts. Comparative tests are reported also with our own set of 378 vessel widths selected sparsely in 38 images from the Tayside Scotland diabetic retinopathy scre…

Water content of latent fingerprints - Dispelling the myth.

2016

Abstract Changing procedures in the handling of rare and precious documents in museums and elsewhere, based on assumptions about constituents of latent fingerprints, have led the author to an examination of available data. These changes appear to have been triggered by one paper using general biological data regarding eccrine sweat production to infer that deposited fingerprints are mostly water. Searching the fingerprint literature has revealed a number of reference works similarly quoting figures for average water content of deposited fingerprints of 98% or more. Whilst accurate estimation is difficult there is no evidence that the residue on fingers could be anything like 98% water, even…

Gli acquisti di prodotti florovivaistici in Italia

2012

This paper examines the consumers’ behaviours in buying flowers and ornamental plants in Italy, through the analysis of attitudes, motivations, preferences and, in particular, of the tendency to purchase organic flowers and ornamental plants. The results if, on the one hand, show a modest spread in purchasing organic flowers and ornamental plants, on the other hand, show a good tendency to purchase and the willingness to pay for organic products, revealing concrete opportunities of growth for this area of the market.

2020

This work addresses the way in which Argentine Fat Activism has developed, in recent years, the demand for depathologization of fatness, taking elements from critical discourses on the health of fat people to frame them in a perspective typical of the Human Rights. First, the contemporary fat body is described in terms of stigma and discrimination, especially in the health field. Then, they refer to a series of critical positions on the pathologization and medicalization of fatness from the biomedical perspective, Fat Studies and Fat Activism. Lastly, a series of interventions that the Argentine activist collective Taller Hacer la Vista Gorda produced between 2017 and 2020 were considered, …

Estimating the size of the loan sharking market in Italy

2014

In the current economic crisis, the risk is so high that entrepreneurs, commercial activities and even families may turn to the illegal market to obtain liquidity. This article proposes an estimate of the size of the usury credit market in Italy. The estimate is based on the assumption, provided by Guiso1, that before coming to a moneylender the borrower seeks to obtain credit through official channels. The results of our estimates confirm the seriousness of the problem, but provide much lower data than those reported periodically by the media. It is estimated that 372,000 economic activities may have been potentially involved in the usury market in 2012. The volume of loans disbursed in th…

Linear and nonlinear interest rate exposure in Spain

2010

PurposeThis paper aims to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the influence of interest rate risk on Spanish firms at the industry level.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology employed has its origin in the two‐index linear regression model proposed by Stone. This traditional interest rate exposure model has been extended in this paper to allow for a nonlinear exposure component as well as the presence of asymmetric behaviour in the exposure pattern.FindingsInterest rate exposure is not homogeneous for all the Spanish industries. In line with other markets, highly leveraged industries (construction and real estate), regulated industries (electrical and utilities), and banking industry…

The HERBA Study: A Retrospective Multi-Institutional Italian Study on Patients With Brain Metastases From HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

2019

There is no sufficient evidence to establish a standard of care for patients with brain metastases (BM) from HER2Data of 154 patients were retrospectively collected at 14 Italian institutions through a specifically designed database.Median overall survival (OS) was 24.5 months. Patients receiving surgery/stereotactic radiosurgery experienced longer OS compared to those receiving whole-brain radiotherapy or no treatment (33.5 vs. 11.4 months; hazard ratio = 0.34; 95% confidence interval, 0.22-0.52; P .001). Interestingly, whole-brain radiotherapy did not improve OS compared to no treatment (11.4 vs. 9.8 months; hazard ratio = 0.99; 95% confidence interval, 0.62-1.62; P = .99). HER2-targeted …
