Efficient generation of energetic ions in multi-ion plasmas by radio-frequency heating
2017
We describe a new technique for the efficient generation of high-energy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in multi-ion plasmas. The discussed ‘three-ion’ scenarios are especially suited for strong wave absorption by a very low number of resonant ions. To observe this effect, the plasma composition has to be properly adjusted, as prescribed by theory. We demonstrate the potential of the method on the world-largest plasma magnetic confinement device, JET (Joint European Torus, Culham, UK), and the high-magnetic-field tokamak Alcator C-Mod (Cambridge, USA). The obtained results demonstrate efficient acceleration of 3He ions to high energies in dedicated hydrogen–deuterium mixtures.…
Long-term changes in drought indices in eastern and central Europe
2021
This study analyses long-term changes in drought indices (Standardised Precipitation Index—SPI, Standardised Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index—SPEI) at 1 and 3?months scales at 182 stations in 11 central and eastern European countries during 1949–2018. For comparative purposes, the necessary atmospheric evaporative demand (AED) to obtain SPEI was calculated using two methods, Hargreaves-Samani (SPEIH) and Penman-Monteith (SPEIP). The results show some relevant changes and tendencies in the drought indices. Statistically significant increase in SPI and SPEI during the cold season (November–March), reflecting precipitation increase, was found in the northern part of the study region, in …
Study of two midgut aminopeptidases from Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner
2008
Aminopeptidases N (APNs) have been identified as Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxins receptor candidates in several Lepidopteran species. Employing the RACE PCR technique we obtained two complete cDNAs corresponding to two APNs expressed in the midgut of Ostrinia nubilalis larvae. One of the sequences was 3624 bp long, and the predicted protein was composed by 940 aminoacids, whereas the other cDNA was 3226 nucleotides long, leading a putative protein composed by 994 aminoacids. The in silico study of the sequences, showed in both proteins a signal peptide, a GPI-anchor domain, a zinc-binding region HEXXHX18E and a GAMEN motif, characteristic of the gluzincin aminopeptidases. Moreover, severa…
The European Courts and the Security Council: Between "Dédoublement Fonctionnel" and Balancing of Values
2009
The recent case law of various international tribunals facing questions related to UN Security Council resolutions shows the clear tendency to grant primacy to the UN legal order. This trend, far from being well founded on formal arguments, appears to be a tribute to a legal order perceived as superior, and, at the same time, is revealing of the ‘value oriented’ approach followed by the courts. Such an approach can be categorized from a theoretical perspective in the light of Scelle's theory of relations between legal orders, whereby the courts implement in their respective legal orders values stemming from the UN legal order. Various critical remarks can be advanced in relation to this att…

Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe: De-essentialising Euro-Mediterranean History
2011
Informed by an interpretative framework where the theoretical paradigms of British Cultural studies and Black feminism inextricably interweave, the paper aims at illustrating a complex identity model of the Black British woman as delineated in Anglo-Nigerian writer Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe (2001). Published at the turn of the 21st century, Evaristo’s second novel-in-verse revolves around the life-experience of a young black woman born of Sudanese parents in Roman London, Zuleika, who ends up having an intense relationship with the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. In its highly orchestrated narrative fabric where prose and poetry conflate, this unconventional historical novel…
“The Linosa Study”: Epidemiological and heritability data of the metabolic syndrome in a Caucasian genetic isolate
2009
Abstract Background and aims Growing evidence suggests that the metabolic syndrome (MetS) has both a genetic and environmental basis. To evaluate the possibility of a further genetic analysis, we estimated prevalence rates and heritabilities for the MetS and its individual traits in the adult population of Linosa, a small and isolated Italian Island in the southern-central part of the Mediterranean Sea. Methods and results The Linosa Study (LiS) group consisted of 293 Caucasian native subjects from 51 families (123 parents; 170 offsprings). The MetS was defined according to NCEP/ATP III criteria and the following prevalence rates were calculated: hyperglycaemia 20.3%; central obesity 34.9%;…
EFFICIENCY AND JUSTICE IN EUROPEAN CONTRACT LAW
2008
Abstract: In the last century, refl ections on contract law have been almost entirely dominated by classical contract theory and laissez–faire ideology, while open considerations of effi ciency and justice have played a marginal role. The rise of European contract law has gradually led to the abandonment of traditional arguments typical of national private laws and has sparked a growing debate on effi ciency and justice. This trend does not always contribute to the quality of the debate, as it is often ideologically polarized between ‘right wing’ arguments pleading in favour of marketoriented polices and ‘left wing’ arguments in support of consumers’ rights, both proposing solutions inspir…
