International Bordetella pertussis assay standardization and harmonization meeting report. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georg…
2009
An international meeting on Bordetella pertussis assay standardization and harmonization was held at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA, 19-20 July 2007. The goal of the meeting was to harmonize the immunoassays used for pertussis diagnostics and vaccine evaluation, as agreed upon by academic and government researchers, regulatory authorities, vaccine manufacturers, and the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary objectives were (1) to provide epidemiologic, laboratory, and statistical background for support of global harmonization; (2) to overview the current status of global epidemiology, pathogenesis and immunology of pertussis; (3) to develop a consen…
In vitro antibacterial activity of endodontic sealers
2004
Summary Objectives To evaluate the antibacterial activity of four endodontic sealers: one epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus), two zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)-based sealers (Endomethasone, Pulp Canal Sealer), and one sealer containing both ZOE and orthophenilphenol (Vcanalare). Methods A direct contact test (DCT) was performed. A 10 μl suspension of Enterococcus faecalis was placed on the test material 20 min, 24 h and 7 days after mixing. Bacteria were allowed to directly contact the sealers for 1 h at 37 °C. Bacterial growth was then spectrophotometrically measured every 30 min for 7 h, and again after 24 h as well. Results All freshly mixed sealers showed complete inhibition of bacterial growth. S…
The "Honeymoon Phase" in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM): Frequency, Duration and Predictive Factors at Onset
2012
Abstract: Aim of thè study was: to analyze thè epidemiological features of paediatric T1DM at onset and their relation to remission frequency and duration in thè first year of disease, to assess clinical effìcacy of Glucose Evaluation Trial REMission (GETREM) protocol in terms of induction and maintenance of thè "honeymoon phase" and to evaluate Insulin Dose-Adjusted A1C values at onset [IDAA1C = HbAlc% + (Insulin U/Kg/die x 4)] as a predictor of remission. 181 patients less than 15 years of age were admitted at our Department for T1DM onset and were treated according to GETREM protocol in thè years 2008-2011. The following data were recorded at onset: age, sex, modality of onset according …
Scritti in onore di Pellegrino Capaldo
2014
Enhanced TESF methodology for course excellence
2010
The need to achieve the excellence in services provided by a University has been object of study and research for several decades. Often, the focus is not only on the education service, but on several satellite services provided by a university. This article focuses on teaching, considered as a central service, believing (the authors) that the improvement actions of an academic institution should always start from this service. The work proposes the implementation of a tool able to measure student perceptions on certain selected aspects of the course. This tool is part of the Teaching Experiment and Student Feedback (TESF) methodology previously developed by the authors. Here, the steps to …
Statistical properties of a new student satisfaction index
2010
Quality of Higher Education is increasingly important in all developed countries. In fact quality and reputation are key elements to control the flow of students at national and international level. The authors have shown that quality of education can be improved through a process of self-assessment of the teaching services and a well studied analysis of the student feedback. In particular a new student satisfaction index was formulated which allows student feedback being summarised and interpreted for a continuous course improvement. In this paper some statistical properties of the student satisfaction index are illustrated, and comparisons with other measures based on Likert scales are ma…
Key-indicators for maternity hospitals and newborn readmission in Sicily
2017
This paper proposes a composite indicator for the classification of maternity units, which takes into account for the different dimensions of service delivery, as potential predictors of health outcomes. As a measure of outcome, infant readmissions is considered, being a proxy of morbidity. The results highlight that after controlling for risk factors of the newborn, and for the presence of neonatal intensive unit, infants born in lower level hospitals show readmission rates higher than infants born in higher level hospitals.
Preliminary evaluation of a short version questionnaire for Executive Functioning Self-Report (EF-SR)
2020
The aim of the present study is the development and the evaluation of preliminary psychometric characteristics of a short form self-report questionnaire to assess executive functioning (EF). The research was conducted in a sample of 316 Italian children that attended primary or secondary schools, with an age range between 7 and 11. EFA showed that Executive Functioning Self-Report (EF-SR) is composed of eleven items that are adequately represented by a single factor that characterizes the total score of the EFs. Furthermore, preliminary analyses showed an adequate level of skewness and kurtosis, of internal reliabilities, and test-retest reliability. Finally, the EF-SR showed positive moder…
Educational Impact Evaluation of Professional Development of In-Service Teachers: The Case of the Dialogic Pedagogical Gatherings at Valencia “On Gia…
2021
There is a broad consensus on the impact of teacher quality on students’ outcomes. However, the debate on how to evaluate the impact of teacher training on student improvement remains open. The evaluation of the impact of in-service teacher training, organized in a network for different schools, has been analyzed very little to date. Our research displays an innovative approach in this regard, through an In-Service Professional Development Program based upon scientific evidence and dialogic principles: The Pedagogical Gatherings “On Giant’s Shoulders”. We conducted a multilevel communicative study to analyze its impact upon students’ achievement and schools’ outcomes whose teachers taking p…
SHARP: Environment and Person Independent Activity Recognition with Commodity IEEE 802.11 Access Points
2022
In this article we present SHARP, an original approach for obtaining human activity recognition (HAR) through the use of commercial IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) devices. SHARP grants the possibility to discern the activities of different persons, across different time-spans and environments. To achieve this, we devise a new technique to clean and process the channel frequency response (CFR) phase of the Wi-Fi channel, obtaining an estimate of the Doppler shift at a radio monitor device. The Doppler shift reveals the presence of moving scatterers in the environment, while not being affected by (environment-specific) static objects. SHARP is trained on data collected as a person performs seven differe…
