Changes in self-rated health and quality of life among Syrian refugees migrating to Norway: a prospective longitudinal study
2020
Abstract Background Forced migrants can be exposed to various stressors that can impact their health and wellbeing. How the different stages in the migration process impacts health is however poorly explored. The aim of this study was to examine changes in self-rated health (SRH) and quality of life (QoL) among a cohort of adult Syrian refugees before and after resettlement in Norway. Method We used a prospective longitudinal study design with two assessment points to examine changes in health among adult Syrian resettlement refugees in Lebanon accepted for resettlement in Norway. We gathered baseline data in 2017/2018 in Lebanon and subsequently at follow-up one year after arrival. The mai…
Clinical analysis following lumbar interspinous devices implant: where we are and where we go
2014
Objectives:We present our experience with patients treated with interspinous devices who are affected by neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) or lumbar disc herniation (LDH) where the interspinous system has been inserted following microdiscectomy.Study design:Retrospective study. Methods:This study included patients (n=100) with NIC secondary to lumbar spinal stenosis (group 1), and patients (n=100) with LDH (group 2) in whom the interspinous device has been implanted following radicular decompression in a period spanning 6 years. The latter have been compared with a homogenous group of patients (n=100) where no interspinous system has been implanted following microdiscectomy (group 3…
The HLA locus and multiple sclerosis in Sicily
2005
The authors report the analysis of HLA-class II allelic heterogeneity in a well characterized multiple sclerosis (MS) Sicilian dataset. Family-based association analysis revealed evidence for excess transmission to affected individuals for alleles HLA-DRB1*1501, DRB1*04, and DQB1*0302. When analyzed as haplotypes, the authors observed excess transmission for the DRB1*0400-DQB1*0302 haplotype. Sicilian patients share the HLA-DRB1*1501 susceptibility allele with affecteds living in continental Italy, but also display the allelic heterogeneity that characterizes Mediterranean populations.
[Validity of the use of penbutolol in essential arterial hypertension].
1990
Thirty patients suffering from WHO I-II class slight-moderate essential arterial hypertension were treated with a beta-blocker (Penbutolol) alone and once a day to assess its antihypertensive effectiveness and its affect on heart frequency, lipid metabolism and kidney function. The drug proved highly effective in reducing P.A.S. and P.A.D. values and no negative influence was documented on lipid metabolism, kidney function or heart frequency.
Association between nutritional values of hays fed to horses and sensory properties as perceived by human sight, touch and smell
2019
International audience; Although hay is the foundation of most equine diets, horse owners rarely ask for biochemical analysis and the routine practice is to choose hay based on its 'perceived' nutritional value. The present study aimed at exploring the relationship between sensory properties as perceived by sight, touch and smell, and the nutritional value of hay measured by biochemical analysis using a 'free sorting task' method. Fifty-four non-expert participants were asked individually to: (1) observe 21 hays samples, (2) group together hays that they perceived as similar for each of the three modalities (hay appearance, odour or texture) and (3) characterize each formed group with a max…
Moral reasoning and moral conflict in patients of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – Frontotemporal dementia spectrum
2020
The aim of this study was to investigate the moral reasoning and moral conflict in patients of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – frontotemporal dementia (ALSFTD) spectrum. Ten ALS patients without cognitive impairment, 10 ALS patients with cognitive or behavioral impairment, 10 ALSFTD patients and 23 controls were examined with neuropsychological and behavioral tests as well as with a set of eight well -designed moral dilemmas. The responses to the moral dilemmas were used as proxies to evaluate interpersonal moral reasoning. Reactivity to change, reaction time and arousal were used as markers of moral conflict. ALSFTD patients showed more “utilitarian” responses and less moral conflict t…
Computer assisted evaluation of retinal vessels tortuosity in Fabry disease.
2012
. Purpose: Fabry Disease (FD) is a rare X-linked metabolic disorder characterized by diffuse deposition of sphingolipids in many tissues. Retinal vessel tortuosity is a common ocular manifestation in FD and may represent a useful marker for the disease. Unfortunately its clinical evaluation is poorly reproducibile and alternative means of evaluation may be of interest. We tested a new semi-automatic software measuring retinal vessel tortuosity from eye fundus digital images in a group of FD patients. Methods: Observational case-control study evaluating four mathematical parameters describing tortuosity (relative length, sum of angle metric [SOAM], product of angle distance [PAD], triangul…
Antiplatelet effects of intravenous iloprost in patients with peripheral arterial obliterative disease
1986
The dose-dependent inhibition of platelet aggregation by the chemically stable, prostacyclin-mimetic, iloprost, was studied in patients suffering from stage II-III peripheral arterial obliterative disease (PAOD). The study was designed as a randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial. Iloprost was administered i.v. to six patients at doses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 ng/kg X min for 4 h, with an interval of 2-3 days between the infusions. During iloprost infusion, systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure, heart rate and blood flow in the affected limb remained unchanged. In contrast, there was a considerable, dose-dependent inhibition of ADP- and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation a…
The Italian Multiple Sclerosis Database Network (MSDN): The risk of worsening according to IFNβ exposure in multiple sclerosis
2006
We evaluated the risk of worsening according to the length of exposure to interferon beta (IFNβ)ina large cohort of 2090 multiple sclerosis patients collected by the Italian MS Database Network. Overall 44-140 patient-visits with a follow-up of 22-143 patient-years were evaluated. Forty-one per cent of patients were exposed to IFNβ for up to 2 years, 39% for 2- 4 years and 20% for more than 4 years. A Cox regression model was used to analyse two clinical outcomes: disability progression and worsening of relapse rate. The technique of propensity score was applied to reduce bias in the comparison of non-randomized groups. The risks of disability progression (HR=0.23; 95% CI: 0.17 - 0.30) and …
Evaluation of emotional skills in nursing using regression and QCA models: A transversal study
2019
Abstract Background Emotional skills are fundamental for quality service by nursing professionals, providing more personalized attention and a close relationship between the professional and patient. Objectives To compare linear relationship models (linear regressions) and models based on comparative qualitative analysis (QCA) in the analysis of the possible influence of socio-demographic variables (age and sex), working conditions (type of contract and seniority) and academic training (type of degree and specific training) on emotional abilities (emotional intelligence and empathy) in nursing. Design It is a transversal design in a single temporary moment. Participants The sample of this s…
