This chapter is not intended to advocate for a particular surgical technique, but it does provide insight into improving our understanding of the pathophysiology of anterior knee pain syndrome. Our objectives were: to identify a relationship, or lack of one, between the presence of PFM and the presence of anterior knee pain; to analyze the long-term response of VMO muscle fibers to increased resting length; and to determine the incidence of patellofemoral osteoarthritis after IPR surgery. The morphology of cardiac muscle was investigated in a porcine model of septic shock, created by intermitted application of Escherichia coli-endotoxin. The earliest lesions, found after 18 h of septic shock, were endothelial cell swelling, marked leucostasis and slight ischaemic alterations of the muscle fibres. At the end point of the experiments, after 48 h, some fibrin thrombi were found associated with more pronounced ischaemic alterations of cardiac muscle cells and some necrotic fibres. Light microscopic observations employing intravital methylene blue staining and impregnation by the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide technique are presented for intraepidermal nerve fibre endings of the intervibrissal fur in the mystacial pad of the rat snout. Both procedures revealed anatomical details of the intraepidermal nerve fibre plexus in epidermal hillocks often located very close to the mouths of hairs. These nerve fibres appeared to resemble those described in previous immunohistochemical studies as cluster or bush endings. 1. Cats were given single injections of 1.8 mg/kg reserpine intraperitoneally. After a time interval of 18 hours the animals were killed. The concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the right and left atria and ventricles was estimated by a method reported previously. 2. Reserpine caused a similar loss of catechol amines from all parts of the heart. The concentration of noradrenaline was reduced by 93–97%, the concentration of adrenaline by 59–79%. 3. These observations suggest that the adrenaline of the heart behaves differently from that of sympathetic ganglia or postganglionic nerve fibres after an injection of reserpine. The ALICE Transition Radiation Detector: Construction, operation, and performance

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/$c$ in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. In the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron a high-resolution coordinate detector for high-energy particles is operated. It consists of scintillating fibres with diameters of 4000 multi-anode photomultiplier channels. It is one of the most modern focal-plane detectors for magnetic spectrometers world-wide. To correct variations in the detection efficiency, caused by the different gains and the different optical transmittances, a fully automated off-line calibration procedure has been developed.
