Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the Sc K-edge EXAFS of scandium trifluoride

2016

Scandium fluoride ScF3 has a simple cubic structure and attracts attention due to its large negative thermal expansion (NTE) over a wide range of temperatures (0-1100 K). In this study we present ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of ScF3 and their validation using the Sc K-edge EXAFS spectra in the temperature range from 300 K to 1000 K measured at the XAFS beamline of ELETTRA. The obtained results allow an assessement of the employed AIMD model and provide insight into the local structure and the lattice dynamics of ScF3 beyond the harmonic approximation. A strong anisotropy of the fluorine atom vibrations in the direction orthogonal to the -Sc-F-Sc- chain is observed. An exp…

Analysis of hybrid silica materials with the aid of conventional NMR and GC/MS.

2009

Two simple and straightforward procedures for determining the organic content of hybrid silica materials by means of conventional NMR and GC/MS techniques are described. The methods involve dissolving the hybrid material either in a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide in deuterated water containing a suitable reference or in a solution of hydrogen fluoride in water and extracting with methylene chloride. These methods constitute useful routine techniques for obtaining immediate information concerning both the amount and chemical composition of the organic compounds on the silica surface.

Microradiography and confocal laser scanning microscopy applied to enamel lesions formed in vivo with and without fluoride varnish treatment

1996

The aim of the present investigation was to combine 2 techniques suitable for lesion characterization: quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on in vivo induced lesions with and without a fluoride varnish (Duraphat(R)) treatment. Orthodontic bands were attached to premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to induce enamel caries on the buccal surfaces. In the caries development part of the study, 1 tooth of each pair received at the start 1 topical application with the fluoride varnish Duraphat(R), the contralateral tooth serving as untreated control. All teeth were extracted after 4 weeks. In the caries progression part, the premolars were…

Phosphoraneiminato complexes of manganese and cobalt with heterocubane structure

1999

The phosphoraneiminato complexes [MnBr(NPEt3)]4 (1) and [M4Br5{NP(NMe2)3}3] with M = Mn (2) and M = Co (3) are prepared by melting reactions from the anhydrous metal dibromides with the silylated phosphaneimines Me3SiNPR3 (R = Et, NMe2) in the presence of potassium fluoride. All complexes are characterized by crystal structure analyses. 1 forms an only slightly distorted Mn4N4 heterocubane skeleton with an approximate Td symmetry and short Mn…Mn distances of average 295.7 pm. In the structures of 2 and 3 one μ3-NPEt3 ligand of 1 is replaced by one bromine atom with μ3-function. This leads to the novel heterocubane type M4N3Br with approximate C3 symmetry. The deformation of the cubic skelet…

Power monitoring in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides

2011

We report on propagating mode power monitoring in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) by measuring the resistance of gold stripes supporting the DLSPPW mode propagation. Inevitable absorption of the DLSPPW mode in metal causes an increase in the stripe temperature and, thereby, in its resistance whose variations are monitored with an external Wheatstone bridge being accurately balanced in the absence of radiation in a waveguide. The investigated waveguide configuration consists of a 1-µm-thick and 10-µm-wide polymer ridges tapered laterally to a 1-µm-wide ridge placed on a 50-nm-thin and 4-µm-wide gold stripe, all supported by a magnesium fluoride substrate. Usi…

Fiber-coupled dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides.

2010

Fiber in- and out-coupling of radiation guided by dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) is realized using intermediate tapered dielectric waveguides. The waveguide structures fabricated by large-scale UV-lithography consist of 1-microm-thick polymer ridges tapered from 10-microm-wide ridges deposited directly on a magnesium fluoride substrate to 1-microm-wide ridges placed on a 50-nm-thick and 100-microm-wide gold stripe. Using fiber-to-fiber transmission measurements at telecom wavelengths, the performance of straight and bent DLSPPWs is characterized demonstrating the overall insertion loss below 24 dB, half of which is attributed to the DLSPPW loss of propagati…

Increased acetone exhalation induced by metabolites of halogenated C1 and C2 compounds.

1982

Rats were exposed, in a closed desiccator jar chamber, to concentrations of various halogenated C1 and C2 compounds at which the metabolizing capacities were saturated (Vmax conditions). Within the exposure period of 50 h concentrations of the xenobiotic and of exhaled acetone were monitored in the gas phase of the system. The quantitative extent of acetone exhalation was dependent on the individual compound examined. Acetone exhalation was stimulated in presence of vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and 1,1,2-trichloroethane. Solution-processible electrode materials for a heat-sensitive piezoelectric thin-film sensor

2012

Abstract Piezoelectric sensors are needed in a wide range of applications from physiological measurement applications to industrial monitoring systems. Custom-designed, highly integratable and cost-effective sensor elements can be manufactured by using flexible materials in combination with high-throughput printing for fabrication. This would also enable the embedding of ubiquitous sensors in our living environment to improve the common welfare. Here, we have fabricated flexible piezoelectric sensor elements using printing methods. We demonstrated that alternative, printable electrode materials are compatible with temperature-sensitive functional substrates. Low-temperature curable electrod…

Depth profiles of hardening in lithium fluoride irradiated with swift58Ni ions

2004

The changes of hardness and dislocation formation in LiF crystals irradiated with 630-MeV 58Ni ions up to a dose of 20 MGy were studied by microindentation and dislocation etching techniques. Above the threshold fluence of 2 × 1010 ions/cm2, a marked effect of hardening, which is related mainly to damage processes in the track core, has been observed. Its magnitude depends on ion fluence and energy loss. To investigate the depth distribution of hardening, indentation tests on crystal cross sections cleaved parallel to ion flux were performed. It has been found that the hardness change along the ion path correlates with the ion energy loss and reaches the highest value at the Bragg maximum. …
