Biogenic iron-silver nanoparticles inhibit bacterial biofilm formation due to Ag+ release as determined by a novel phycoerythrin-based assay

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) can be considered as a cost-effective alternative to antibiotics. In the presence of Fe(III)-citrate and Ag+, Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 produces biogenic Ag-NPs embedded in its peculiar exopolysaccharide (EPS). K. oxytoca DSM 29614 was cultivated in a defined growth medium–containing citrate (as sole carbon source) and supplemented with Ag+ and either low or high Fe(III) concentration. Formation of linear Ni nanochains inside carbon nanotubes: Prediction from density functional theory

Abstract First principles calculations have been performed to investigate the ground state properties of monoperiodic single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) containing nanochain of aligned Ni atoms inside. Using the PBE exchange-correlation functional ( E xc ) within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) we predict the clusterization of Ni filaments in ( n ,0) CNTs for n ⩾  9 and for ( n , n ) CNTs for n ⩾  6. The variations in formation energies obtained for equilibrium defective nanostructures allow us to predict the most stable Ni@CNT compositions. Natural eutectogels: sustainable catalytic systems for C–C bond formation reactions

Natural eutecto gels were prepared combining properties of amino acids with the ones of deep eutectic solvents. Soft materials obtained were fully characterised determining the gel-sol transition temperatures and analysing mechanical and morphological features through rheological measurements and polarised optical microscopy. All eutecto gels were tested as catalytic reaction media for the enantioselective aldol reaction and, the best performing one was also used to carry out the Michael addition. Las campañas de 2010 y 2011 en el yacimiento Neolítico del Mas d’Is han venido a complementar los numerosos datos conocidos hasta la actualidad. En las mismas se ha podido documentar ampliamente la morfología de las estructuras que veníamos interpretando como fosos, por un lado; y, por otro, se ha avanzado en el conocimiento de la secuencia cronocultural del yacimiento al encontrar episodios que hasta el momento estaban pocos representados.

Regular theta-firing neurons in the nucleus incertus during sustained hippocampal activation

This paper describes the existence of theta-coupled neuronal activity in the nucleus incertus (NI). Theta rhythm is relevant for cognitive processes such as spatial navigation and memory processing, and can be recorded in a number of structures related to the hippocampal activation including the NI. Strong evidence supports the role of this tegmental nucleus in neural circuits integrating behavioural activation with the hippocampal theta rhythm.
