We report the differential charged jet cross section and jet fragmentation distributions measured with the ALICE detector in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s=7  TeV. Jets with pseudorapidity |η|40  GeV/c, the pythia calculations also agree with the measured charged jet cross section. pythia6 simulations describe the fragmentation distributions to 15%. Larger discrepancies are observed for pythia8. SCOAP

Intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of jet constituents in p-Pb collisions at ALICE

2014

The integral part of the URHIC program is also to study the pp and p–A collision in order to understand the “reference” (unmodified) particle production (in pp) and the “cold” nuclear phenomena in p–A. The main focus of this thesis is to study the parton shower evolution in p–Pb collisions in ALICE by analyzing jet fragmentation transverse momentum (j_{T} ). The analysis of j_{T} in p–Pb collisions, for which ALICE has a high quality data set, lays bases for later extension to pp and Pb–Pb data in order to study the induced gluon radiation. Additionally, the yields of \pi^0 meson were studied in Pb–Pb sqrt(s_{NN}) = 2.76 GeV collision. The \pi^0 analysis was followed for continuity of work …

Relationship between apoptosis and survival molecules in human cumulus cells as markers of oocyte competence

2017

SummaryTo select from a single patient the best oocytes able to reach the blastocyst stage, we searched for valuable markers for oocytes competence. We evaluated the DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and the level of some survival molecules, such as AKT, pAKT and pERK1/2, in individual cumulus cell–oocyte complexes (COC). The study included normo-responder women. The average age of the patients was 34.3. DFI in cumulus cells was evaluated using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP nick-end labelling (TUNEL) assayin situ. AKT, pAKT and pERK1/2 were measured by immunological assay and densitometric analysis of fluorescent signals using NIS-Elements BR 3.10 image software. Statisti…

Correlation between the DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and sperm morphology of infertile patients

2020

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the correlation between the DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) and sperm morphology in patients undergoing ICSI, as a predictive parameter in reproductive outcomes. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 125 infertile patients enrolled in a fertility clinic. Seminal characteristics were measured following the WHO guidelines (2010) for the examination of the seminal fluid. After collecting motile sperm population by pellet swim up, DFI was calculated and simultaneously associated with sperm morphology using in situ TUNEL assay and an image analyzer software in at least 250 spermatozoa for each patient. Results All subjects were divided into two groups accordin…

Evaluation of inflammatory reactions and genotoxic effects after exposure of nasal respiratory epithelia to benzene.

2003

<i>Background:</i> The aim of this study was to identify inflammatory changes as well as genotoxic effects in cultivated human respiratory epithelial cells after in vitro exposure to benzene. <i>Methods:</i> Primary cell cultures of nasal respiratory mucosa were exposed to synthetic air enriched with 5,000 µg/m3 of benzene at an air/liquid interface over 8 h and then to synthetic air only over the following 24 h. Controls were continuously exposed to synthetic air over 32 h. To detect inflammatory reactions, release of prostaglandin E2 was quantified using a competitive enzyme immunoassay. The Comet Assay was used to quan…

Effect of sperm DNA fragmentation on pregnancy outcome depends on oocyte quality

2010

Objective To quantify the effect of sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) on reproductive outcome by evaluating the most statistically significant bias factors using logistic regression. Design Prospective blind observational cohort study. Setting University affiliated private IVF unit. Patient(s) Two hundred ten male partners of couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or first intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles with fresh or thawed sperm with the women's own or donated oocytes. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) SDF determined before and after swim-up (n = 420), odds ratio calculated of the effect of an increase of one unit of SDF on pregnancy, and stratified regress…

DNA-fragmentation and apoptosis-related proteins of muscle cells in motor neuron disorders

2009

Apoptosis has been described as one of the mechanisms of muscle fiber loss in infantile spinal muscular atrophy. In order to investigate if muscle fiber-apoptosis plays a role in other denervating disorders as well, we studied DNA-fragmentation, a hallmark of apoptosis, by the TUNEL-method and, moreover, the expression patterns of apoptosis-related proteins in 2 patients suffering from ALS and in 6 patients with polyneuropathy. We identified DNA-cleavage in muscle fibers of all these patients. Furthermore, we found strong expression of bax and ICE promoting apoptosis in muscle fibers. However, also strong expression of the anti-apoptotic factor bcl-2 was found. Our findings indicate that de…

Cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of electronic cigarette liquids on human mucosal tissue cultures of the oropharynx

2016

The popularity of electronic cigarettes (ECs) is rapidly growing and ECs are claimed to be an uncritically regarded alternative to conventional cigarettes. The mucosal tissue of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) is the first contact organ for xenobiotics such as liquids of ECs. The aim of this study is to investigate the bimolecular effects of e-liquids on human pharyngeal tissue cultures to evaluate whether e-liquids and their components present a risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Fresh tissue samples of healthy oropharyngeal mucosa were assembled into mucosal tissue cultures. Two fruit-flavored liquids (FLs), one tobacco-flavored liquid (TL) (all containing nicotin…

Value of the sperm deoxyribonucleic acid fragmentation level, as measured by the sperm chromatin dispersion test, in the outcome of in vitro fertiliz…

2005

To determine the prognostic value of sperm DNA fragmentation levels, as measured by the sperm chromatin dispersion (SCD) test, in predicting IVF and ICSI outcome.Double-blind prospective study.University-affiliated private IVF setting.A total of 85 couples undergoing infertility treatment with IVF/ICSI.Analysis of DNA fragmentation by the SCD test in 170 aliquots obtained from the ejaculate and from the processed semen used for assisted reproductive technologies (ART).Percentage of spermatozoa with fragmented DNA was statistically correlated with embryo quality and reproductive success.Fertilization rate was inversely correlated with DNA fragmentation (r = -0.245 P = .045). Higher DNA fragm…
