Generalized feed-forward based method for wind energy prediction

2013

Abstract Even though a number of new mathematical functions have been proposed for modeling wind speed probability density distributions, still the Weibull function continues to be the most commonly used model in the literature. Therefore, the parameters of this function are still widely used to obtain typical wind probability density distributions for finding the wind energy potential by researchers, engineers and designers. Once long-term average of Weibull function’s parameters are known, then the probability density distributions can easily be obtained. Artificial neural network (ANN) can be used as alternative to analytical approach as ANN offers advantages such as no required knowledg…

A RELIABILITY MODEL FOR OPTIMAL ALLOCATION OF SPARE TOOLS IN FMS

1989

ABSTRACT A model for the dynamic management of the tool set of an FMS workstation is developed. The proposed approach processing the on-line recorded tool failure data updates the estimate of the parameters of the probability density functions of tool life and selects, at the occurence of each failure, the code of the tool to be allocated in the workstation storage devices in order to maximize its reliability over a planned horizon.

A Novel Method of Distance Measurement Based on Pulse Position Modulation and Synchronization of Chaotic Signals Using Ultrasonic Radar Systems

2009

This paper deals with a novel method of transmission and receipt of a signal based on both the property of two chaotic systems generating the same chaotic signal when they are synchronized and the property of pulse position modulation (PPM) to be insensitive to the distortions of the transmission channel. The method is discussed in the context of ultrasonic radar systems, in which the transmitter and receiver, which consist of ultrasonic sensors, are near each other, and the received signal consists of the transmitted signal reflected by an obstacle. A reference sinusoidal signal is superimposed to a chaotic signal generated by a master chaotic system, and the whole signal is modulated acco…

A Non-Stationary MIMO Vehicle-to-Vehicle Channel Model Derived from the Geometrical Street Model

2011

In this paper, we derive a non-stationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel model from the geometrical street model. Single-bounce scattering is assumed for both fixed and moving scatterers. The high mobility of the transmitter, the receiver, and the surrounding vehicles results in time-variant angles-of-departure (AODs) and angles-of-arrival (AOAs). This fact makes the model non-stationary. Starting from the geometrical model, an analytical expression is derived for the channel gain taking into account the impact of fixed and moving scatterers. The statistical properties of the proposed channel model are studied. Analytical solutions are provided for th…

Fiber laser mode locked through an evolutionary algorithm

2015

Mode locking of fiber lasers generally involves adjusting several control parameters, in connection with a wide range of accessible short-pulse dynamics. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate the ability of an evolutionary algorithm to prescribe a set of cavity parameters entailing specific self-starting mode locking. The prescribed parameters are applied to electrically driven polarization controllers, thus shaping the effective nonlinear transfer function at play within the fiber cavity. According to the specifications of the objective function used for the optimization procedure, various short-pulse regimes are obtained. Our versatile method represents an effective novel avenue f…

Single thermal zone balance solved by Transfer Function Method

2005

We present an algorithm that uses the Z-transform operator to face the problem of heat transmission in a single thermal zone composed by multilayered walls. The method is very flexible and could be adopted to calculate the transfer function coefficients able to simulate the thermal behaviour of a room in free floating. Knowing the transfer function coefficients, it is possible to simulate the dynamic profile of each inner surfaces temperature and furthermore of the inner air temperature. The proposed algorithm is fully described granting maximum clarity. The explicitness of all steps of the calculus make possible the definition of a method that is able to vary all of the calculus parameters…

Energy models for fatigue life estimation under uniaxial random loading. Part II: Verification of the model

2001

Abstract The paper concerns verification of the energy model for the fatigue life determination under the uniaxial random and variable-amplitude stress state. Application of the energy parameter for the fatigue life calculation using the algorithmic method under the random and variable-amplitude uniaxial tension–compression proves that most results of the fatigue life calculation are included in the scatter band with the coefficient determined during the uniaxial cyclic tests. The strain energy density parameter seems to be efficient for the fatigue life determination in the ranges of high and low numbers of cycles. The analysis was based on the author's tests and the data from literature. …

Handling Underdispersion in Calibrating Safety Performance Function at Urban, Four-Leg, Signalized Intersections

2011

Poisson basic assumption of equidispersion is often too much restrictive for crash count data; in fact this type of data has been found to often exhibit overdispersion. Underdispersion has been less commonly observed, and this is the reason why it has been less convenient to model directly than overdispersion. Overdispersion and underdispersion are not the only issues that can be a potential source of error in specifying statistical models and that can lead to biased crash-frequency predictions; these issues can derive from data properties (temporal and spatial correlation, time-varying explanatory variables, etc.) or from methodological approach (omitted variables, functional form selectio…

The design of measurement-based underwater acoustic channel simulators using the INLSA algorithm

2015

This paper utilizes the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) algorithm for designing measurement-based wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channel simulators. Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the time-variant channel impulse response (TVCIR) of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the time-frequency correlation function (TFCF), the power delay profile (PDP), and the probability density function (PDF) of the channel envelope with the corresponding quan…
