Converting Retirement Benefit into a Life Care Annuity with Graded Benefits: How Costly Would it Actually Be?

2016

This paper deals with life care annuities, i.e. bundled products comprising a life annuity and long-term care insurance. It aims to assess the cost of converting retirement benefit into a life care annuity with graded benefits using a pre-existing public pay-as-you-go pension scheme. With this objective in mind, we present an actuarial method based on array calculus for valuing this type of life care annuity. The health dynamics of the annuitant rely on a reversible illness-death multistate framework. The paper contains a numerical example in which mortality and disability assumptions are based on data from the USA and Australia, although this should be viewed simply as an illustration. In …

Adaptive Bias Field Correction: Application on Abdominal MR Images

2017

Segmentation of medical images is one of the most important phases for disease diagnosis. Accuracy, robustness and stability of the results obtained by image segmentation is a major concern. Many segmentation methods rely on absolute values of intensity level, which are affected by a bias term due to in-homogeneous field in magnetic resonance images. The main objective of this paper is two folded: (1) To show efficiency of an energy minimization based approach, which uses intrinsic component optimization, on abdominal magnetic resonance images. (2) To propose an adaptive method to stop the optimization automatically. The proposed method can control the value of the energy functional and sto…

Stability Analysis of a Linear Parameter Varying Adaptive Output Feedback Control System

2021

Abstract Output feedback control systems often require an adaptive filter for properly shaping the loop transfer function, as certain system plant parameters may be uncertain or varying. This renders the overall closed loop to a linear parameter varying (LPV) system, for which the stability analysis is challenging due to non-trivial dynamics of the adaptation law. This paper develops a stability analysis technique of a feedback controlled oscillatory system. A polytopic overapproximation of the parameter set together with the feasibility of certain LMIs guarantees asymptotic stability of the closed loop. The varying filter parameter is only required to be lower and upper bounded, where the …

An FPGA-Based Adaptive Fuzzy Coprocessor

2005

The architecture of a general purpose fuzzy logic coprocessor and its implementation on an FPGA based System on Chip is described. Thanks to its ability to support a fast dynamic reconfiguration of all its parameters, it is suitable for implementing adaptive fuzzy logic algorithms, or for the execution of different fuzzy algorithms in a time sharing fashion. The high throughput obtained using a pipelined structure and the efficient data organization allows significant increase of the computational capabilities strongly desired in applications with hard real-time constraints.

Continent Anal Urinary Diversion in Classic Bladder Exstrophy: 45-Year Experience

2017

Objective To evaluate the long-term outcomes in patients with classic bladder exstrophy and continent anal urinary diversion (CAD) for continence, upper urinary tract status, secondary malignancies, and sexual function. Patients and Methods The medical records of 82 exstrophy patients having undergone CAD in our department between 1970 and 2015 were reviewed. Patients were invited for follow-up examinations and asked to complete validated questionnaires relating to sexual function. Results Thirty-two of 57 eligible patients with a median follow-up of 23.9 years were included in the study. Ninety-seven percent of patients were fully continent during daytime. Upper urinary tract and renal fun…

Congenital primary hypothyroidism with subsequent adenomatous goiter in a Turkish patient caused by a homozygous 10-bp deletion in the thyroid peroxi…

2006

Summary Objective  Congenital primary hypothyroidism occurs in 1 of 4000 births. Whereas the majority of the cases are due to developmental defects of the thyroid gland, 20% carry a defect in thyroid hormonogenesis. We report a Turkish boy who had goitrous hypothyroidism due to a mutation in the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene. Design  The TPO gene was sequenced directly from genomic DNA and cDNA which was transcribed from three RNA samples harvested from different parts of the patient's excised thyroid gland. Patient  The boy was thyroidectomized because of continuing growth of his thyroid gland and development of multiple nodes suspected of malignancy by ultrasound examination. Histopatholo…

Interactions and resonances in quantum systems

2017

This thesis book is concerned with the interactions and resonances in quantum systems and is subdivided into three thematics. First, our work is aimed at constructing in the local limit a systematic method for a normalized vibrational Hamiltonian for a strongly excited n-degree-of-freedom molecular system from the generators of the Lie algebra, the algebra of the invariant polynomials built in classical mechanics from the the kernel of the adjoint operator adH0 . We present both the method of construction in case of absence and in case of a p : q resonance system with n degrees of freedom. Application to the non-linear triatomic molecule ClOH is then given. On the other hand, by using the LT…

Developmental outcomes in adolescence of children with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability: A systematic review of prospective s…

2021

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability (ID) represent approximately two-thirds of the ASD population. Here we focused on prospective research assessing different areas of functioning of children with ASD, without ID, until adolescence. Based on a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO CRD42020189029), a systematic review of prospective studies (published between 01.01.2010 and 01.01.2020) was conducted. Twenty-eight studies met eligibility criteria. Findings indicated that ASD diagnosis and the Intelligence Quotient were highly stable over time across studies. Executive Functioning, Theory of Mind and Central Coherence processes tended to improve, althoug…

The role of the results of functional tests and psychological factors on prediction of injuries in adolescent female football players

2021

Football is a popular sport among adolescent females. Given the rate of injuries in female footballers, identifying factors that can predict injuries are important. These injuries are often caused by complex reasons. The aim of this study was to investigate if the combination of demographic (age, number of training and match play hours/week), psychosocial (perceived stress, adaptive coping strategies) and physiological factors (functional performance) can predict a traumatic injury in adolescent female footballers. A cohort consisting of 419 female football players aged 13–16 years was established. Baseline questionnaires covered potential risk factors for sport injuries, and measurem…
