On modal mu-calculus over finite graphs with bounded strongly connected components.

2010

For every positive integer k we consider the class SCCk of all finite graphs whose strongly connected components have size at most k. We show that for every k, the Modal mu-Calculus fixpoint hierarchy on SCCk collapses to the level Delta2, but not to Comp(Sigma1,Pi1) (compositions of formulas of level Sigma1 and Pi1). This contrasts with the class of all graphs, where Delta2=Comp(Sigma1,Pi1).

Maximal Operators with Respect to the Numerical Range

2018

Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a nonempty, proper, convex subset of $\mathbb{C}$. The $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are defined as the operators having numerical ranges in $\mathfrak{n}$ and are maximal with this property. Typical examples of these are the maximal symmetric (or accretive or dissipative) operators, the associated to some sesquilinear forms (for instance, to closed sectorial forms), and the generators of some strongly continuous semi-groups of bounded operators. In this paper the $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are studied and some characterizations of these in terms of the resolvent set are given.

Synthesis and crystal structure of novel Ruddlesden–Popper strontium niobium oxynitrides

2002

Abstract The family (SrO)(SrNbO 2-x N) n is the first example of Ruddlesden-Popper strontium niobium oxynitrides and provides layered structures to obtain mixed valence niobium compounds with a variety of oxidation states and transport properties. We have prepared members with n =1 (Sr 2 NbO 3 N) and n =2 (Sr 3 Nb 2 O 5 N 2 ) by solid state reaction of Nb 2 O 5 and SrCO 3 at 900–1050 °C under ammonia flow. These compounds crystallize in the I4/mmm space group and show a range of anionic stoichiometry that together with the N/O ratio determines the formal oxidation state for niobium and therefore the resultant physical properties. Samples of the n =1 member show mixed valence Nb 5+ /Nb 4+ an…

Artificial neural network comparison for a SHM procedure applied to composite structures.

2013

In this paper different architectures of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for structural damage detection are studied. The main objective is to create an ANN able to detect and localize damage without any prior knowledge on its characteristics so as to serve as a realtime data processor for SHM systems. Two different architectures are studied: the standard feed-forward Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) ANNs. The training data are given, in terms of a Damage Index ℑD, properly defined using the piezoelectric sensor signal output to obtain suitable information on the damage position and dimensions. The electromechanical response of the assembled structure has b…

Bundlet Model of Single- Wall Carbon, BC2N and BN Nanotubes, Cones and Horns in Organic Solvents

2013

Bundlet Model of Single- Wall Carbon, BC2N and BN Nanotubes, Cones and Horns in Organic Solvents The existence of Single-wall C-nanocones (SWNCs), especially nanohorns (SWNHs) and BC2N/Boron Nitride (BN) analogues is discussed in organic solvents in cluster form. A theory is developed based on the bundlet model, describing distribution function by size. The phenomena present unified explanation in the model, in which free energy of (BC2N/BN )SWNCs involved in cluster, is combined from two components: volume one proportional to the number of molecules n in cluster and surface one, to n1/2. The model enables describing distribution function of (BC2N/BN )SWNC clusters by size. From geometrical…

The Anthropologist as Deviant Modernizer: Felipe Landa Jocano’s Journey Through the Cold War, the Social Sciences, Decolonization, and Nation Buildin…

2021

This chapter traces the transnational journey of Philippine anthropologist Felipe Landa Jocano from the 1950s to the 1970s. Jocano was part of a group of Philippine social scientists who earned their post-graduate degrees at the University of Chicago after the Philippines became independent from the US. One of the pre-eminent scholars in the Philippines, Jocano’s professional and intellectual journey unfolded against the backdrop of the Cold War and decolonization. Jocano received funding from US institutions that contributed to the Cold War, and he was committed to structural functionalism and modernization theory. Yet he developed a decolonized approach to modernization that questioned th…

A tool for a first analysis of architectural façades

1997

Abstract This work presents a tool for analysing the figurative structure of architectural facades. The procedure begins by singling out the elementary shapes which make up the facade image; it detects and identifies them as “area objects”, even if present in combination in virtual or mental form and groups them into classes of equal objects. A second step is the analysis of the inner structure of the classes: equidistant, arithmetical and geometrical sequences, or alternate distances are distinguished. The procedure ends by singling out the symmetries which structure the facade image and displaying them, pointing out their implied hierarchy through a thickness differentiation.

Deducing the USLE mathematical structure by dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory

2010

The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was originally deduced by a statistical analysis of a large data set of soil loss measurements. The multiplicative structure of the model has been criticised due to the considerable interdependence between the variables. Using the soil erosion representative variables and the reference condition adopted in the USLE, the aim of this paper was to apply dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory to deduce the functional relationship among the selected variables. The analysis yielded a multiplicative equation, similar to the USLE. Therefore, this study suggested that the USLE has a logical structure with respect to the variables used to simulate the …

Shedding light on typical species: Implications for habitat monitoring

2021

Habitat monitoring in Europe is regulated by Article 17 of the Habitats Directive, which suggests the use of typical species to assess habitat conservation status. Yet, the Directive uses the term “typical” species but does not provide a definition, either for its use in reporting or for its use in impact assessments. To address the issue, an online workshop was organized by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV) to shed light on the diversity of perspectives regarding the different concepts of typical species, and to discuss the possible implications for habitat monitoring. To this aim, we inquired 73 people with a very different degree of expertise in the field of veget…
