Thyroid sarcoidosis as a unique localization.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disorder characterized by granulomatous lesions, principally affecting the lungs. There are numerous reports in the literature of an associated involvement of the thyroid, much more frequently in hypothyroid than in hyperthyroid subjects. The present case report refers to a woman presenting with thyroid nodules and normal biochemical levels and thyroid function parameters, while histology revealed sarcoid-type lesions. Subsequent investigations and a long follow-up showed no evidence of involvement of other sites, including the lungs. Thyroid disorders are more frequent in old age, especially in women. Overt thyroid dysfunction may manifest as aging itself or as age-associated disorders of other organs. This paper is devoted obtaining the threshold of the credibility of the solution by means of Tikhonov's regularization method in case of spectral lines, emitted from microsize plasma sources. The reliability of Tikhonov algorithm was verified by means of solving model tasks with different ratio between instrumental function and measured profile and, with different levels of noise.

Prolonged anaesthesia with isoflurane and halothane. Effects on hepatic function.

Hepatic function was assessed pre-operatively and on the first and sixth postoperative days in 40 healthy patients who underwent prolonged maxillofacial surgery with isoflurane or halothane anaesthesia. No major changes were observed in hepatic enzymes or bilirubin. One-stage prothrombin time and Factor VII concentrations decreased on the first postoperative day and this change was more pronounced in the halothane group. The results support the use of isoflurane rather than halothane for prolonged anaesthesia in respect of the synthesising function of the liver.

The cytokine erythropoietin (Epo) is tissue-protective in preclinical models of ischemic, traumatic, toxic, and inflammatory injuries. We have recently characterized Epo derivatives that do not bind to the Epo receptor (EpoR) yet are tissue-protective. For example, carbamylated Epo (CEpo) does not stimulate erythropoiesis, yet it prevents tissue injury in a wide variety ofin vivoandin vitromodels. A method for the time-varying nonlinear prediction of complex nonstationary biomedical signals

A method to perform time-varying (TV) nonlinear prediction of biomedical signals in the presence of nonstationarity is presented in this paper. The method is based on identification of TV autoregressive models through expansion of the TV coefficients onto a set of basis functions and on k -nearest neighbor local linear approximation to perform nonlinear prediction. The approach provides reasonable nonlinear prediction even for TV deterministic chaotic signals, which has been a daunting task to date. Effects of propanil on the European eel Anguilla anguilla and post-exposure recovery using selected biomarkers as effect criteria

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the physiological response of Anguilla anguilla to propanil and the degree of recovery after being moved to clean water. Preliminary acute toxicity test was carried out in the laboratory and the median lethal concentration (LC50) at 96 h was calculated as 31.33 mg/L (29.60–33.59 mg/L). NOEC and LOEC values (at 96 h) were also calculated as 20 and 25 mg/L, respectively. The fish were exposed to 0.63 and 3.16 mg/L of propanil for 72 h and allowed to recover for 144 h.
