The swine-specific coronavirus transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) uses pig aminopeptidase-N (pAPN) as a cellular receptor. We showed that the human aminopeptidase-N (hAPN) cannot substitute for pAPN in this respect, although the two enzymes have 80% amino acid sequence identity. In order to map the TGEV binding site on pAPN, we constructed a series of APN cDNA chimeras between pAPN and hAPN and analyzed them for their capacity to confer infectivity. The region between residues 717 and 813 was found to be essential for infectivity. This region also contains the epitopes for three TGEV-blocking monoclonal antibodies directed against pAPN. Porcine respiratory coronavirus is related genetically to porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus with a large deletion in S protein. The respiratory virus is a mutated form that may be a consequence of the gastroen- teritis virus's evolution. Intensive passages of the virus in its natural host may enhance the appearance of mutations and therefore may contribute to any attenuated form of the virus. ABSTRACT The Foodborne Viruses in Europe network has developed integrated epidemiological and virological outbreak reporting with aggregation and sharing of data through a joint database. We analyzed data from reported outbreaks of norovirus (NoV)-caused gastroenteritis from 13 European countries (July 2001 to July 2006) for trends in time and indications of different epidemiology of genotypes and variants. Rotavirus gastroenteritis: epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic aspects and economic implications

Results 114 cases were diagnosed with rotavirus gastroenteritis in 2011 and 122 cases in 2012, frequently in the colder months, sex ratio M/F 1.42/1 in 2011, 1.18/1 in 2012 and in the age group 1-3 (58.90% of cases). The clinical severity was assessed by Vesikari score: 91 cases admitted in 2011 (79.82%) and 112 cases admitted in 2012 (91.80%) presenting a medium/severe score. 15 cases presented neurological symptoms and also 15 cases had renal failure. Among the electrolyte disorders the most commonly found was hyponatremia ( 150mEq/L). The hospitalization costs of rotavirus gastroenteritis cases ranged from 58.60€ to 5345 RON (1243.02€).

In order to acquire information regarding viral agents and epidemiologic features of severe paediatric Viral Acute Gastroenteritis (VAGE) across multiple seasons in the pre-rotavirus-vaccine era, the epidemiologic characteristics of VAGE were investigated among paediatric patients hospitalized in a major Sicilian paediatric hospital from 2003 to 2013. Overall, 4725 children were observed and 2355 (49.8%) were diagnosed with a viral infection: 1448 (30.6%) were found positive to rotavirus, 645 (13.7%) to norovirus, 216 (4.6%) to adenovirus, and 46 (0.97%) to astrovirus.
