In the literature: March 2016

2016

The way clones resistant to anti-EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor) inhibition evolve in non-small cell lung cancer is far from being determined. In an international cooperative effort led by investigators at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, the origin of acquired resistance mediated by the EGFRT790M mutation has been further elucidated. That mutation, recognised as gatekeeper and present in about 60% of pretreated cases with anti-EGFRs, could occur either from the selection of previously existing EGFR790M cell clones or by the evolution of originally EGFR790M-negative drug-tolerant cells. In a series of elegant experiments, the authors show that these drug-tolerant cells have a di…

AGING IN PLACE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY: CARE TRANSITIONS AMONG OLDER TWO-GENERATION FAMILIES

2017

Little is known of transitions in care and housing of old two-generation families that include aging (≥40) adults with intellectual disability (ID) and their older (≥65) parents. This study employed the “housing pathways” theory in order to explore the experiences of these families of such transitions. All potential old two-generation families from two local authorities in Taiwan were recruited; 237 families completed our survey and 61 our in-depth interviews between May 2015 and July 2016. Different models and types of transitions in care and housing of these families were identified and found to be connected with changes in their care responsibilities and living arrangements. Old parents …

Relativistic international development and its potential for implementing self-determination in Ethiopia: Policy recommendations

This paper is an abstract of policy recommendations based on my presentation to the 2019 Annual Conference of Oromo Studies Association. It is included in the official Proceedings of the Conference. A longer paper was published open access in Archivio Antropologico Mediterraneo, XXII, n. 21 (2), 2019, title: 'The relativistic attitude in development: reflections on the implementation of the Ethiopian multinational Constitution'.

Membrane Structure of Aquaporin Observed with Combined Experimental and Theoretical Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

2021

High-resolution structural information on membrane proteins is essential for understanding cell biology and for the structure-based design of new medical drugs and drug delivery strategies. X-ray diffraction (XRD) can provide angstrom-level information about the structure of membrane proteins, yet for XRD experiments, proteins are removed from their native membrane environment, chemically stabilized, and crystallized, all of which can compromise the conformation. Here, we describe how a combination of surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations can account for the native membrane environment. We observe the structure of a glycerol facilitator channel (GlpF)…

Sogni erotici e seme femminile nella antica medicina greca

2009

This paper analyses passages of the Hippocratic Corpus, of Aristotle and Galen about oneirogmòs, spermatic emission during sleep, referring specifically to women. Into the Hippocratic texts there is only one gynaecological case among many cases about males: for them this nocturnal emission is symptom of dangerous illness and De genitura gives a causal explanation of such phaenomenon. Instead, in Aristotle and Galen erotic dream is evidence for or against emission of female seed and female contribution to generation. As the argument of Historia animalium book X shows clear theoretical differences from that of De generatione animalium, the topic of erotic dream also concerns issues of authent…

Green Spectroscopy: A Scientometric Picture

2009

ABSTRACT The state of the art of green spectroscopy, as a sustainable and friendly alternative to the classical spectrometric methods of analysis, has been established from the evaluation of the scientific literature published about this topic in the frame of the so-called Green Chemistry paradigm. Special attention has been paid to the fact that keywords like Green Analytical Chemistry, environmentally friendly, or clean analytical method or sustainable analytical chemistry are far from being commonly used in analytical studies. In spite of this fact there are numerous studies that provide direct analytical methodologies, or a reduction of reagents consumption or waste generation, the recy…

Online mass flow prediction in CFB boilers with explicit detection of sudden concept drift

2010

Fuel feeding and inhomogeneity of fuel typically cause fluctuations in the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) process. If control systems fail to compensate the fluctuations, the whole plant will suffer from dynamics that is reinforced by the closed-loop controls. This phenomenon causes reducing efficiency and the lifetime of process components. In this paper we address the problem of online mass flow prediction, which is a part of control. Particularly, we consider the problem of learning an accurate predictor with explicit detection of abrupt concept drift and noise handling mechanisms. We emphasize the importance of having domain knowledge concerning the considered case and constructing the…

Piantare alberi. Storie e modelli di crescita nel "Cato maior de senectute" di Cicerone

2019

Is the idea of “growing” and “development” useful to explain a work about senectus? The aim of this paper is to verify if Cicero’s Cato maior may offer a literary portrayal of “growth” in a double way: the biological one, with the human being intended as a mere individual, and the cultural one, relevant to human generations. The use of words and expressions from the rural context seems to enable Cicero to place the elderly in a justified relationship with the others ages of life, as he was rethinking the conflict of generations, because this opposition always talks about the ways every society conceives and describes itself.

Ernährungsphysiologie erhitzter Fette: Langfristige Tierversuche

1974
