Technical and economical feasibility of biomass use for power generation in Sicily

2012

Biomass can provide a reliable support for production ofbiofuels while contributing to sustainable management of natural resources. Many countries, including Italy, have introduced important incentive schemes to support the use of biomass for electricity, heat and transportation. This has raised considerable interest towards the use of biomass for energy generation purposes. Nonetheless, the design and installation ofbiomass-fuelled power plants present several critical issues, such as choice and availability of biomass, choice of technology, power plant localization and logistics. The case study tackled in this paper evaluates the economies originated by a 1MW el Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC…

Privacy-Preserving Overgrid: Secure Data Collection for the Smart Grid

2020

In this paper, we present a privacy-preserving scheme for Overgrid, a fully distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture designed to automatically control and implement distributed Demand Response (DR) schemes in a community of smart buildings with energy generation and storage capabilities. To monitor the power consumption of the buildings, while respecting the privacy of the users, we extend our previous Overgrid algorithms to provide privacy preserving data aggregation (PP-Overgrid). This new technique combines a distributed data aggregation scheme with the Secure Multi-Party Computation paradigm. First, we use the energy profiles of hundreds of buildings, classifying the amount of &ldquo

Sulle tracce di Ovidio epico? Contese tra padri e figli in Ps. Quint. decl. 258

2018

In the Minor Declamation 258 it is possible to notice some echoes of the Armorum iudicium of Ov. met. xiii 1-383, an episode whose success in Greece and Rome dates back to the Cyclic poems. Porcius Latro, the famous rhetorician and teacher of Ovid, chose this subject for one of his declamations and provided his pupil with a model: in fact, as showed by Sen. contr. ii 2, 8, the poet borrowed from the rhetor some literal expressions. We can also remember Sen. contr. x and Calp. decl. 21, two of the most important texts where the motifs of family disputes and reward for viri fortes are re-elaborated, in different ages. Therefore, the Minor declamation 258 is one of these interesting adaptation…

La tutela e la gestione delle risorse idriche nella prospettiva del PNRR

2022

The right to accessing clean and drinkable running water for all is formally ensured in Italy, but it is undeniable that there are substantial distribution and pollution problems that hinder its fulfilment. That is especially true for southern and insular areas where the living conditions for large parts of the population remain problematic. The European Court of Justice has condemned Italy twice already for these deficiencies, which are now aggravated as a result of the health and economic crisis linked to Covid-19 pandemic. Accordingly, there is a pressing need for a serious and systematic intervention of the legislator, leading to the renewal of legislation on national and regional level…

High-Resolution Nonlinear Raman-Spectroscopy in Gases

1990

0377-0486; The resolution in the Raman spectra of gases has been greatly improved by the development of the different methods of non-linear Raman scattering. When two laser beams, one of which has a tunable frequency, are focused in a sample, a stimulated Raman process occurs as soon as the frequency difference between the two lasers is equal to a Raman-active rovibrational or rotational transition frequency. The Raman resonance can be detected in different ways: by coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) or the corresponding Stokes process (CSRS), by a gain in one of the beams (stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy, SRGS) or a loss in the other (inverse Raman spectroscopy, IRS), or even …

Technical and economical comparison between different topologies of PV plant under mismatch effect

2014

This paper presents a technical and economical comparative analysis between two topology of photovoltaic plant. In particular the performances of series-parallel (SP) and total cross tied (TCT), topologies are taken into account, referring to a partially shaded photovoltaic plant. Thanks to a simulation model developed, in the paper the mismatch effects due to three different shading conditions, for SP and TCT topology plant, are quantified. Since the TCT solution, even though increase the energy production, raise the complexity of plants as well as their costs, an evaluation of the individual costs of each component of a SP and TCT plant topology, as PV modules, support structure, inverter…

Solar-assisted heat pumps systems for domestic hot water production in small energy communities

2021

Abstract The paper investigates the energy performances of several configurations of solar-assisted heat pumps equipped with photovoltaic (PV) and photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) panels as well as solar thermal collectors for domestic hot water production. The systems are sized to serve small aggregates of users assumed as micro energy communities in low housing density context in the South of Italy. Electricity storages are also considered to smooth the interaction with the electric grid. Several indices are defined and calculated to guide toward a correct sizing, to check users’ satisfaction and to assess primary energy savings. The results show how the energy consumption from the analysed sys…

Design for recyclability and the avoidance of waste: the case of printed paper in Germany

1999

This paper discusses the generation of process waste in printed paper recycling and some factors affecting the amount of de-inking waste. The effects on waste generation by paper grades, which are designed for improved recyclability, are pointed out. The amount of waste generated is considered as the improvement in recyclability. This corresponds to a reduction in the use of materials that cannot be recycled, which, in the case of paper means lowering their mineral content. Two scenarios of a dynamic model of the fluxes of printed paper in Germany between 1993 and 2000 are used to analyse the amount of waste generated. No product changes are assumed in the first scenario, whereas improved …
