An integrated approach based on Life Cycle Assessment and Thermoeconomics: Application to a water-cooled chiller for an air conditioning plant
2018
Abstract A large number of methods for energy systems analysis were developed in the last decades, aimed at acquiring an in-depth understanding of plant performances and enabling analysts to identify optimal design and operating conditions. In this work an integrated approach based on Life Cycle Assessment and Thermoeconomics is proposed as a method for assessing the exergo-environmental profile of energy systems. The procedure combines the capabilities of these two techniques, to account simultaneously for aspects related to thermodynamics of energy conversion processes and to the overall impacts along the plant life cycle related to other phases, i.e. from raw material extraction to the d…
Life Cycle Assessment Performance Comparison of Small Solar Thermal Cooling Systems with Conventional Plants Assisted with Photovoltaics
2012
Abstract Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) allows for the consideration of energy consumption and environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life, from the cradle to the grave . Starting from the results obtained in the IEA SHC Task 38 framework for the LCA of small solar assisted heat driven chillers, the application of such methodology has been extended to systems with a conventional compression chiller assisted by a photovoltaic plant. This study aims to provide a more comprehensive investigation through a comparison of these two families of solar assisted cooling systems (with solar thermal or PV), which is an important topic for studies concerning the research of eff…
Description of the Retention and Peak Profile for Chromolith Columns in Isocratic and Gradient Elution Using Mobile Phase Composition and Flow Rate a…
2014
The effect of the modifier concentration and flow rate on the chromatographic performance of a second generation Chromolith® RP-18e column, under isocratic and gradient elution with acetonitrile-water mixtures, was examined using four sulphonamides as probe compounds. The acetonitrile concentration was varied between 5 and 55% (v/v), and the flow rate between 0.1 and 5.0 mL/min, keeping the other factors constant. The changes in both retention and peak profile were modelled, and used to build simple plots, where the logarithm of the retention factor was represented against the modifier concentration (in gradient elution, against the initial modifier concentration), and the half-widths or wi…
Discussion on “Experimental Deformation of Opalinus Clay at Elevated Temperature and Pressure Conditions: Mechanical Properties and the Influence of …
2021
AbstractThe testing procedure and results on saturated samples of Opalinus Clay in the work of Schuster et al. (Rock Mech Rock Eng https://doi.org/10.1007/s00603-021-02474-3, 2021) were conducted and presented using strain rates two to four orders of magnitudes higher than the rates needed to allow pore pressure equilibrium in the material, both in drained and undrained conditions. This leads to an erroneous estimation of the mechanical properties in saturated conditions. We discuss this aspect in the context of shale testing. We also discuss the effect of drying-induced fissuring on the mechanical properties of geomaterials tested in dry conditions.
Generation of heat and power from biogas for stationary applications: boilers, gas engines and turbines, combined heat and power (CHP) plants and fue…
2013
Biogas is produced during the anaerobic degradation of organic material. The produced biogas can be used for heat, electricity or cogeneration of heat and electricity in a combined heat and power plant (CHP). This chapter first discusses the key issues related to combustion of biogas/biomethane in different stationary equipments. It then describes the utilisation of biogas for the generation of electric power and heat in different stationary applications such as boilers, gas engines (CHP), micro turbines and fuel cells.
From magnetic to nonlinear optical switches in spin-crossover complexes

Malfant, Isabelle Real, Jose-Antonio Rodriguez, Vincent Wiley-v c h verlag gmbh Weinheim Si; Various attempts to combine magnetic and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in a molecule are reviewed, with a special focus on the possibility of interplay between the magnetic component and the quadratic (proportional to E-2) NLO response. This multidisciplinary research leads to the idea of spin-crossover-induced (SCO-induced) NLO switching and is evaluated at the synthetic level, with insights provided by computational chemistry. The need for nontraditional experimental setups to record NLO properties i…
Secure random number generation in wireless sensor networks
2014
The increasing adoption of wireless sensor networks as a flexible and inexpensive tool for the most diverse applications, ranging from environmental monitoring to home automation, has raised more and more attention to the issues related to the design of specifically customized security mechanisms. The scarcity of computational, storage, and bandwidth resources cannot definitely be disregarded in such context, and this makes the implementation of security algorithms particularly challenging. This paper proposes a security framework for the generation of true random numbers, which are paramount as the core building block for many security algorithms; the intrinsic nature of wireless sensor no…
A measurement-based study on the correlations of inter-domain Internet application flows
2014
Internet traffic characterization has a profound impact on network engineering and traffic identification. Existing studies are often carried out on a per-flow basis, focusing on the properties of individual flows. In this paper, we study the interaction of Internet traffic flows and network features from a complex network perspective, focusing on six types of applications: P2P file sharing, P2P stream, HTTP, instant messaging, online games and abnormal traffic. With large-volume traffic flow records collected through proprietary line-speed hardware-based monitors, we construct flow graphs of these different application types. Based on the flow graphs, we calculate the correlation coefficie…
HTLS Conductors: A Way to Optimize RES Generation and to Improve the Competitiveness of the Electrical Market—A Case Study in Sicily
2018
Stringent environmental constraints make more difficult to identify new energy corridors and build new power lines. The increase in the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources (RESs) makes the operation of electrical systems increasingly difficult in some areas. The transmission system operators (TSOs), in Italy Terna, are forced to exploit the existing overhead transmission lines, increasing the possibility of dispatching energy, in particular RES, optimizing the transmission capacity. Therefore, after a brief presentation of the Sicilian electricity system and a brief description of high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors, a case study is presented. It is shown how it i…
