Proteomic profiling of German Dornfelder grape berries using data-independent acquisition

2017

Grapevine is one of the most important fruit plants throughout the world. Sequencing of the grape genome in 2007 enabled in-depth analyses of the grape proteome. Whereas many studies addressed changes in proteomic composition of grapes during ripening, we focused on the proteome of mature grape berries from Dornfelder, a characteristic red wine grape for Germany. Current data-independent acquisition proteomics technology enables the analysis of proteomic compositions in a degree of accuracy that was unreachable only a few years ago. Using a label-free proteomics approach, we quantified 712 proteins in mature Dornfelder grape berries, of which 650 could be annotated by the Blast2GO software.…

Use of selected indigenous yeasts from racemes of Grillo grape variety to improve the production of sparkling base wine

2019

The production of sparkling wines in Sicily is increasing considerably. The most important oenological characteristics of high quality sparkling wines are high content of acidity and low pH. In Sicily, white grape varieties such as those of the cultivar Grillo are characterized by very low concentrations of malic and tartaric acids due to hot climate and reduced rainfall typical of the production area. On the other hand, a very large amount of raceme grapes, characterized by low pH and high content of tartaric and malic acids, is largely produced by Grillo varieties. Hence, the winemaking of racemes might represent a technological solution to increase the quality of the acids in the final w…

Plant Response to Saline-Water Irrigation in a Sicilian Vineyard

2012

This chapter presents results of a 3-year field investigation in a vineyard located in Sicily (Mazara del Vallo, Trapani) within the framework of the Project “Evolution of cropping systems as affected by climate change” (CLIMESCO). Soil-plant responses to two saline irrigation waters were determined by measuring soil hydrological characteristics, soil salinity, crop transpiration and stomatal conductance in field plots of a Sicilian vineyard. The results proved that crop transpiration (T r) and stomatal conductance (G s) were significantly affected by soil salinity conditions, expressed by electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (ECe). Significant reductions in T r and G s were f…

EFFECTS OF LIGHT REDUCTION AT BLOOM ON FRUITS SET IN BLACK MAGIC TABLE GRAPES CV IN EARLY AND LATE PRODUCTION CICLES

2013

A shading experiment in ‘Black Magic’ cv was conducted in Sicily to test a new thinning method, aiming to reduce the no. berries/cluster, maximising quality and value of the production. A reduction of intercepted light was imposed at the 65 stage of the BBCH scale (50% cap fall) for 12 days. The soilless greenhouse conditions allowed two growing cycles occurring under different climate conditions, an early (end of March flowering) and a late production cycle (beginning of August flowering). During the shade treatment, net photosynthetic rate was significantly reduced by 82% and 96% in the late and early production cycles, respectively. The sum of flowers and berries dropped in the untreated…

The use of vineyard spectral signatures to identify table grape cultivars

2021

Vineyards have characteristic responses to sunlight. The reflectance values at the different wavelengths are typical of vegetation and define its spectral signature. The aim of this work was to determine the spectral signatures of table grape vineyards located in the production area of Robinvale (Victoria, Australia) in order to identify cultivars in the vineyard. Spectral signatures were detected from images in eight bands from the Worldview 3 platform. Spectral signatures for a representative number of plots were extracted using satellite reflectance images for each cultivar. Spectral signatures were also collected in the field, from the same cultivars, with a FieldSpec® HandHeld 2 portab…

ULTERIORI APPROFONDIMENTI DEGLI EFFETTI DELLA DIMENSIONE DEGLI ACINI SULLA QUALITA’ DELL’UVA NELLA CV CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2012

In this study we reported the results of a second year of study conducted during 2008 season on irrigated Cabernet Sauvignon\ 1103 P vineyard. We addressed the study of whether differences in berry size (within a population of berries from different bunches) would lead to differences in qualitative parameters and whether flowering process can influence berries variability and qualitative parameters. Berries were classified at pea size into two categories according to their equatorial diameter: ≤ 7 mm as small and ≥ 9 mm as large berries. Development of the two berry categories was evaluated from “pea size” (12th June) to harvest (16th September) in terms of berry mass, equatorial berry diam…

Somatic embryogenesis of Vitis vinifera L. (cv Sugraone) from stigma and style culture

2015

Somatic embryo and plant regeneration were induced from stigma and style culture of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Sugraone). To obtain somatic embryogenesis, explants were cultured on Nitsch and Nitsch basal medium (NN) supplemented with 88 mM sucrose and various combinations of the auxin β-naphthoxyacetic acid (NOA, 0-10 μM) and the cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BA, 0-9 μM). Growth regulators (BA and NOA) in the culture medium were essential for induction of somatic embryogenesis since explants incubated on hormone-free medium never regenerated somatic embryos. Usually, the regenerated somatic embryos become visible as small white globular structures on the surface of the callus 3-4 mo…

Postharvest Application of Sulphur Dioxide Fumigation to Improve Quality and Storage Ability of "Red Globe" Grape Cultivar During Long Cold Storage

2017

Table grape cv 'Red Globe' is produced in Sicily and in other areas of Southern Italy. This produce is very appreciated by consumers, having the best rankings in the world market for exports and quality. Nevertheless, despite it is a non-climacteric fruit, table grape is very perishable, both after harvest, and during postharvest handling and cold storage. In fact, also at low temperatures, table grape is very sensitive to fungal infection (Botrytis cinerea) and other diseases, like gray mold, which is very aggressive. For this reason, a standard practice is to fumigate table grape with sulphur dioxide (SO2), after storage in chambers. The growing market request of table grape cv. 'Red Glob…

Table-Grape Cultivation in Soil-Less Systems: A Review

2022

Table grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is considered to be one of the most popular fruit crops in the world. Italy is the leading table-grape producer in the EU and is the main European exporting country. However, to stay competitive, new solutions and perspectives, including varietal renovation, are now needed in addition to the already well-established Italian table-grape production lines consisting of conventional open-field cultivation and greenhouse cultivation. One of these new perspectives is represented by the development of table-grape soil-less cultivation systems (TGSC) under greenhouse. In fact, TGSC systems are alleged to offer many advantages in terms of the advancement of berry matu…
