2020
The sustainment of replication and transcription of damaged DNA is essential for cell survival under genotoxic stress
A multiplex RTi-PCR reaction for simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus on fresh, minimally pr…
2007
In this work, a new multiplex single-tube real-time PCR approach is presented for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus, three of the more frequent food-borne bacterial pathogens that are usually investigated in a variety of food matrices. The study includes the design and specificity testing, of a new primer and probe specific for Salmonella spp. Reaction conditions were adjusted for the simultaneous amplification and detection of specific fragments in the beta-glucuronidase (uidA, E. coli) and Thermonulease (nuc, Sta. aureus) genes, and in the replication origin sequence (oriC, Salmonella spp.). Melting-curve analysis using a SYBR Green I RTi…
Streamwater responses to reduced nitrogen deposition at four small upland catchments in Norway
2020
AbstractReduced emissions of nitrogen (N) in Europe have resulted in decreasing atmospheric deposition since 1990. Long-term data (1988–2017) from four small Norwegian catchments located along gradients in N deposition, rainfall, and organic carbon (C) show different responses to 25–30% reductions in N deposition during the same period. At three sites the decreased N deposition caused reduced leaching of nitrate to surface water, whereas the westernmost site showed no decrease, probably due to thin soils with low C:N ratio, poor vegetation cover and high precipitation. The loss of total N to streamwater constituted 30–50% of the N deposition. Losses via denitrification are unknown but assum…
Comparison of Two Mathematical Models for Greenhouse Gas Emission from Membrane Bioreactors
2017
In this study two mathematical models (Model I and Model II), able to predict the nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from an University Cape Town (UCT) – membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant, have been compared. Model I considers the N2O production only during the denitrification. Model II takes into account the two ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) formation pathways for N2O. Both models were calibrated adopting real data. Results highlight that Model II had a better capability of reproducing the measured data especially in terms of N2O model outputs. Indeed, the average efficiency related to the N2O model outputs was equal to 0.3 and 0.38 for Model I and Model II respectively.
Charged Bis-Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes with Carbene-Based Ancillary Ligands
2013
Charged cydometalated (CN) iridium(III) complexes with carbene-based ancillary ligands are a promising family of deep-blue phosphorescent compounds. Their emission properties are controlled primarily by the main CN ligands, in contrast to the classical design of charged complexes where NN ancillary ligands with low-energy pi* orbitals, such as 2,2'-bipyridine, are generally used for this purpose. Herein we report two series of charged iridium complexes with various carbene-based ancillary ligands. In the first series the CAN ligand is 2-phenylpyridine, whereas in the second one it is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-pyridine. One biscarbene (:CC:) and four different pyridine carbene (NC:) chelators a…
Flow injection spectrophotometric determination of boron in ceramic materials.
1998
Abstract A flow injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of boron in ceramic materials is described. The method is based on spectrophotometric measurement of the decrease in the pH produced by the reaction between boric acid and mannitol in the presence of an acid-base indicator. A bichannel FI (flow injection) manifold in which the sample solutions were injected into deionized water (at pH 5.4) and the stream was later merged with the reagent stream (a mannitol solution containing 1×10 −4 mol l −1 bromocresol green at pH 5.4), was used. Transient signals were monitored at 616 nm. A theoretical model which describes the dependence between the absorbance values and boric aci…

Temperature and doping dependence of normal state spectral properties in a two-orbital model for ferropnictides
2016
Using a second-order perturbative Green's functions approach we determined the normal state single-particle spectral function $A(\vec{k},\omega)$ employing a minimal effective model for iron-based superconductors. The microscopic model, used before to study magnetic fluctuations and superconducting properties, includes the two effective tight-binding bands proposed by S.Raghu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 220503 (R) (2008)], and intra- and inter-orbital local electronic correlations, related to the Fe-3d orbitals. Here, we focus on the study of normal state electronic properties, in particular the temperature and doping dependence of the total density of states, $A(\omega)$, and of $A(\vec{k},\o…
2030 for the EU: Real steps of change? A short commentary on Biodiversity Strategy and Farm to Fork
2020
A short commentary on the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy and the Farm to Fork Strategy. The Covid-19 pandemic adds other similarly contradictory stances: it is an occasion to change the world for the better, but it also forces us to focus on the here and now to save lives and jobs. The Strategy, whose subtitle is Bringing nature back into our lives, seems to speak to people in lock-down, building on their sense of suffocation from strict indoor living and on the beautiful and nourishing memories of moments spent in nature. However, the Strategy also, and mostly, speaks to industries and entrepreneurs who are projected to the post-Covid time to bring business back into their lives. Regardless…
