The relevant role of family history in predicting type 2 diabetes occurrence.

2019

On June 6, 2019, the Polish Archives of Internal Medicine published an interesting article by Szczerbiński et al,1 entitled “Efficacy of family history, genetic risk score, and physical activity in assessing the prevalence of type 2 diabetes.” This editorial is a commentary on this paper, intending to highlight, one more time, the importance of a positive family history (FH+) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) for estimating diabetes occurrence in the adult population as well as the importance of physical activity (PA) for maintaining optimal body composition and a low incidence rate of chronic disease.2 Since 2011, my research group has provided periodical pieces of evidence (2011, 2013, and 2014) a…

Resveratrol: preventing properties against vascular alterations and ageing.

2005

International audience; Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in developed countries where the common pathological substrate underlying this process is atherosclerosis. Several new concepts have emerged in relation to mechanisms that contribute to the regulation of the vascular diseases and associated inflammatory effects. Recently, potential antioxidants (vitamin E, polyphenols) have received much attention as potential anti-atherosclerotic agents. Among the polyphenols with health benefic properties, resveratrol, a phytoalexin of grape, seem to be a good candidate protecting the vascular walls from oxidation, inflammation, platelet aggregation, and thrombus formation. In …

Community-based oral health promotion practices targeted at children and adolescents in Finland--developing an assessment tool.

2013

Objectives To develop an assessment tool for evaluating oral health promotion practices and to evaluate community-based oral health promotion practices targeted at children and adolescents with this tool. Methods A theoretical framework about health promotion planning, implementation and evaluation was made on the basis of a literature review. Then, information about Finnish community-based oral health promotion practices (n = 12) targeted at children and adolescents was collected using semi-structured interviews. Also, related documents, for example action plans and reports, were collected when available. Next, an assessment tool based on the theoretical framework was developed, and the re…

Frequent use of sugar products by schoolchildren in 20 European countries, Israel and Canada in 1993/1994

1999

The aim of this study was to describe the daily use of certain between-meal sugar products (soft drinks and sweets) of schoolchildren in 20 European countries, Israel and Canada as a part of the Cross-National Survey on Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children--a WHO Collaborative Study. Relationship between different domains of physical activity and positive mental health among young adult men

2020

Abstract Background There is growing evidence on positive effects of physical activity (PA) on mental health. However, the focus of previous research on this relationship has typically been on mental health from the perspective of mental health problems rather than from the perspective of mental wellbeing. Further, previous research has commonly focused rather on leisure time PA without evidence on the role of other domains of PA. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between positive mental health (PMH) and different domains of PA in young Finnish men. The secondary aim was to examine the reasons for physical inactivity among individuals with a lo…
