DFT studies on catalytic properties of isolated and carbon nanotube supported Pd9 cluster. Part II. Hydro-isomerization of butene isomers
2010
The processes involved in the butene hydro-isomerization, occurring on a small palladium cluster in the presence of dissociated hydrogen, have been investigated by means of DFT and DFT/MM approaches. This study has been performed both on an isolated (unsupported) Pd(9) cluster and on the same cluster when it is supported on a portion of a single-walled armchair(6,6) carbon nanotube. The study follows another investigation which has already been published concerning the adsorption, fragmentation and diffusion of hydrogen on the same metal cluster. The main aspects involved in the parallel reaction steps of the whole hydro-isomerization mechanisms are not strongly affected by the presence of …
Singlet‐Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Unlocking Hyperpolarization with Metabolism
2020
Abstract Hyperpolarization‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging can be used to study biomolecular processes in the body, but typically requires nuclei such as 13C, 15N, or 129Xe due to their long spin‐polarization lifetimes and the absence of a proton‐background signal from water and fat in the images. Here we present a novel type of 1H imaging, in which hyperpolarized spin order is locked in a nonmagnetic long‐lived correlated (singlet) state, and is only liberated for imaging by a specific biochemical reaction. In this work we produce hyperpolarized fumarate via chemical reaction of a precursor molecule with para‐enriched hydrogen gas, and the proton singlet order in fumarate is released a…

Towards Large-Scale Steady-State Enhanced Nuclear Magnetization with In Situ Detection
2021
Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) boosts NMR signals of various nuclei enabling new applications spanning from magnetic resonance imaging to analytical chemistry and fundamental physics. SABRE is especially well positioned for continuous generation of enhanced magnetization on a large scale, however, several challenges need to be addressed for accomplishing this goal. Specifically, SABRE requires (i) a specialized catalyst capable of reversible H2 activation and (ii) physical transfer of the sample from the point of magnetization generation to the point of detection (e.g., a high-field or a benchtop NMR spectrometer). Moreover, (iii) continuous parahydrogen bubbling accele…
Variation of the Fermi level and the electrostatic force of a metallic nanoparticle upon colliding with an electrode.
2017
When a metallic nanoparticle (NP) comes in close contact with an electrode, its Fermi level equilibrates with that of the electrode if their separation is less than the cut-off distance for electron tunnelling. In the absence of chemical reactions in solution, the charge on the metallic nanoparticle is constant outside this range before or after the collision. However, the double layer capacitances of both the electrode and the NP are influenced by each other, varying as the function of distance. Because the charge on the nanoparticle is constant, the outer potential of the metallic NP and hence its Fermi level varies as the capacitance changes. This effect is more pronounced for small part…
Yeast ecology of vineyards within Marsala wine area (western Sicily) in two consecutive vintages and selection of autochthonous Saccharomyces cerevis…
2012
In this work, the yeast ecology associated with the spontaneous fermentation of Grillo cultivar grapes from 10 vineyards was analyzed from grape harvest till complete consumption of must sugars. The microbiological investigation started with the plate count onto two culture media to distinguish total yeasts (TY) and presumptive Saccharomyces (PS). Yeasts were randomly isolated and identified by a combined genotypic approach consisting of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of 5.8S rRNA gene and 26S rRNA and sequencing of D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA gene, which resulted in the recognition of 14 species belonging to 10 genera. The distribution of the yeasts within the vineyards s…
Functionalized 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes. IV. synthesis of the indolo[3,2-f]morphan system.
1982
Abstract A short route to the 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-7-one system is described. Condensation of 4-piperidones with diethyl 2-oxopropylphosphonate, followed by catalytic hydrogenation furnished the corresponding piperidylpropanones 6 which were cyclized with mercuric acetate in acetic acid to the target target bicyclic ketones 1 . The Fischer indole synthesis from 1 a afforded regioselectively the indole [3,2-f]morphan 2 , a new heteromorphan type.
Bioconjugates of 1’-Aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic Acid with (S)-3-Amino-2-methylpropanoic Acid and L-Alanine
2010
Formal CH 2 insertion in bioconjugates composed of 1'-aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic acid (Fca) and alanine Boc-Ala-Fca-Ala-OCH 3 gives Fca bioconjugates with the β-amino acid (S)-3-amino-2-methylpropanoic acid (Aib). The novel homologous conjugates of ferrocene were fully characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods. NMR, CD and IR spectroscopy in concert with DFT calculations suggest that the formal "L-Ala-to-(S)-β-Aib mutations" can exert ferrocene helix inversion due to the different stereogenic carbon atoms of L -Ala and (S)-β-Aib. Furthermore, the mutation (de-)stabilizes the conserved secondary structure with two intramolecular hydrogen bonds, depending on the "mutation site". …
Supramolecular hydrogen-bonding tautomeric sulfonamido-phosphinamides: a perfect P-chirogenic memory
2011
P-chirogenic, supramolecular hydrogen-bonding C1-symmetrical sulfonamido–phosphinamides (METAMORPhos) have been successfully prepared. They were all found to possess a characteristic prototropic equilibrium between the PIII and the PV tautomers that is slow on the NMR spectroscopic timescale. Despite the dynamic and reversible protonation of the P centre, the P-chirogenic information was found to be retained in the tautomerization process, even in a protic solvent environment. Several strategies to access the corresponding enantiopure compounds were investigated, such as diastereoselective crystallization, or enantioselective synthesis. It was possible to resolve such a class of chiral liga…
Conformational Analysis of beta-Lactam-Containing Ferrocene Peptides
2009
The homochiral 3-amino-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-phenyl-beta-lactam (≡ Alm) was conjugated with Boc-Ala giving Ala-Alm (9) after Boc-deprotection (Boc = tert-butoxycarbonyl, Ala = alanine). Coupling of FcCOOH (1) and Boc-Fca (10) with “ dipeptide” 9 resulted in the formation of FcCO-Ala-Alm (12) and the trisamide Boc-Fca-Ala-Alm (13), respectively (Fc = ferrocenyl, Fca = 1’ -aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic acid). The reactions were accomplished by the HOBt/EDC procedure and the products were obtained in good yields (HOBt = 1-hydroxybenzotriazole, EDC = N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N’ -ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride). Symmetrically 1, 1’ -disubstituted “ tetrapeptide” Fn(CO-Ala-Alm)2 (14) was prepared…
