This paper focuses on the study of the virtual identity of Internet users in discussion forums and, specifically, their discursive identity. After a brief introduction to the concept of virtual identity, I analyze the basic characteristics of such forums, conceived as a place of dialectic, polyphonic and multidiscoursive communication. In the second part, I examine locutors’ discursive behavior in ideological argumentative discourse. First, I look at the image that the Internet user offers through its argumentative posts and how it is perceived by the virtual community. From the 19th century European intellectuals have been engaged in building nations, which has resulted in the marginalization of multilingualism in many forms. While this is critical territory that cultural materialists and new historicists have extensively mapped, the current text avoids the preferred methods of enquiry that these lines take. The research topic of this dissertation is the press of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) from the March revolution of 1917 in Russia to the end of the Finnish Civil War in the spring of 1918. Under research are 16 party papers, which, however, were not owned by the party, and therefore neither under its guidance nor control. The papers' owners, local working class organizations, elected the editors-in-chief, who often held central posts in the party. In this way they could use their relatively independent positions to further their political views in their editorials.
