Special Issue on “Recent Developments on Modeling and Control of Hybrid Electric Vehicles”

2016

Environmental pollution and energy shortages are not only the two major problems currently in the sustainable development of the automotive industry, but also the two major bottlenecks in the global automotive industry. Facing the enormous requirement of energy-saving and environment protection, the development of new energy vehicles have become an important measure to solve this problem. Recently, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) or electric vehicles (EVs) have become a hot topic from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Among various types of electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) — or as they are commonly dubbed “hybrid vehicles” — offer the distinct advantages of ener…

The alignment of head nods with syntactic units in Finnish Sign Language and Swedish Sign Language

2016

In this paper we examine the relationship between specific head movement events – head nods, often treated as prosodic boundary markers – and syntactic units in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). In the study we investigated the alignment of head nods with syntactic units on the basis of a total of 20 (10+10) FinSL and SSL narratives. The results of the study show that in both languages head nods appeared similarly on syntactic boundaries and that the tendency was to align nods sentence-finally. However, not all head nods behaved this way: for example, a relatively large number of head nods were also found to occur sentence-initially or elsewhere in the sentence. Furthermore, …

On the rhythm of head movements in Finnish and Swedish Sign Language sentences

2016

This paper investigates, with the help of computer-vision technology, the similarities and differences in the rhythm of the movements of the head in sentences in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). The results show that the movement of the head in the two languages is often very similar: in both languages, the instances when the movement of the head changes direction were distributed similarly with regard to clause-boundaries, and the contours of the roll (tilting-like) motion of the head during the sentences were similar. Concerning differences, direction changes were found to be used more effectively in the marking of clause-boundaries in FinSL, and in SSL the head moved near…

Computational analysis of a multi-varied biomimetic neural network

2021

In recent years, astrocytes have emerged as such elements involved in inter-neuronal communication that they are increasingly considered in the synaptic coupling connecting neurons and synapses, thus constituting tripartite synapses. Many studies have focused on this astrocytic influence. With the description of the basic mechanisms of synapses, as well as the influence of gliotransmission, we emphasize that gliotransmission to extra-synaptic areas has so far been mainly studied in vivo and in vitro. We come closer to the paradigms used in AI, by proposing an analysis of the astrocyte influence on the variations of the parameters governing synaptic and extra-synaptic plasticity. We sought to…

Extensible Visualizations of Ontologies in OWLGrEd

2019

OWLGrEd is a visual editor for OWL 2.0 ontologies that combines UML class diagram notation and textual OWL Manchester syntax for expressions. We review the basic OWLGrEd options for ontology presentation customization and consider the framework of OWLGrEd extensions that enables introducing rich use-case specific functionality to the editor. A number of available OWLGrEd extensions offering rich ontology management features to their end-users are described, as well.

Holography and Superresolution

2013

The capability of improving the spatial resolution of imaging systems is usually known as superresolution. Some methods provide improve resolution by playing with the imaging part of the system and without modifying the optical parameters of the imaging lenses. And others act over the geometry, shape and size of sampling pixels in the detection array. The former strategy allows optical superresolution while the latter provide geometrical superresolution. In this contribution, we will review the state of the art in optical superresolution approaches understood as the possibility to overcome the limited resolving power of imaging systems beyond the bounds imposed by Abbe's diffraction theory.…

Surpassing digital holography limits by lensless object scanning holography.

2012

We present lensless object scanning holography (LOSH) as a fully lensless method, capable of improving image quality in reflective digital Fourier holography, by means of an extremely simplified experimental setup. LOSH is based on the recording and digital post-processing of a set of digital lensless holograms and results in a synthetic image with improved resolution, field of view (FOV), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and depth of field (DOF). The superresolution (SR) effect arises from the generation of a synthetic aperture (SA) based on the linear movement of the inspected object. The same scanning principle enlarges the object FOV. SNR enhancement is achieved by speckle suppression and c…

Modelling and Testing of Real Systems

2016

Modelling and Programming are often used together in system development. However, typically there is a large conceptual gap between modelling and programming. This leads to problems in unified handling and the transition between the two. This way, extra work is required when combining modelling and programming. This paper develops a common understanding that can unify modelling and programming in system development.

Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia detection from surface ECG using time-frequency representation images as input dataset for machine learning

2017

Parameter-less ventricular fibrillation detection with time-frequency representation.Time-frequency representations are treated as images for a classifier.A comparison for four classifiers demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. The proposed technique could be applied to any signal and research field. This is a novel approach to signal analysis. Background and objectiveTo safely select the proper therapy for Ventricullar Fibrillation (VF) is essential to distinct it correctly from Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) and other rhythms. Provided that the required therapy would not be the same, an erroneous detection might lead to serious injuries to the patient or even cause Ventricular Fibr…
