Accelerating short read mapping on an FPGA (abstract only)
2012
The explosive growth of short read datasets produced by high throughput DNA sequencing technologies poses a challenge to the mapping of short reads to a reference genome in terms of sensitivity and execution speed. Existing methods often use a restrictive error model for computing the alignments to improve speed, whereas more flexible error models are generally too slow for large-scale applications. Although a number of short read mapping software tools have been proposed, designs based on hardware are relatively rare. In this paper, we present a hybrid system for short read mapping utilizing both software and field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware. The compute intensive semi-g…
The Role of Contextual Factors in the Influence of ICT on Street-Level Discretion
2017
Public service workers in the frontline have traditionally enjoyed a wide freedom to make decisions during policy implementation. Research shows that technology has both constraining and enabling effects on public service workers affecting their ability to exercise discretion. What remains unclear is under which circumstances discretion is influenced by technology. Using a case study approach and drawing on neo-institutional theory, this paper studies a court to identify contextual factors affecting the phenomenon. Findings show that technology has no unilateral effect on street-level discretion, and is found moderated by contextual factors such as the degree of social complexity in a case,…

The national cancer programme in Romania: Challenges in a low-resource healthcare system
2017
Abstract The incidence and mortality due to malignancies are increasing in Romania. Since 2001, Romania provides the public support for cancer patients through the National Programme for Cancer (NPC). Using documentary analysis, the present paper provides a longitudinal and comprehensive examination of all the policy documents issued during 2001 and 2016 within the programme, and of the five implementation reports available. The paper examines several press articles as a sole source for exploring implementation difficulties. Results show that current cancer policies in Romania are focusing on treatment and screening, less on prevention, surveillance, research and rehabilitation and not at a…
Real-Time Localization of Epileptogenic Foci EEG Signals: An FPGA-Based Implementation
2020
The epileptogenic focus is a brain area that may be surgically removed to control of epileptic seizures. Locating it is an essential and crucial step prior to the surgical treatment. However, given the difficulty of determining the localization of this brain region responsible of the initial seizure discharge, many works have proposed machine learning methods for the automatic classification of focal and non-focal electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. These works use automatic classification as an analysis tool for helping neurosurgeons to identify focal areas off-line, out of surgery, during the processing of the huge amount of information collected during several days of patient monitori…
Packet Aggregation in TelosB WSNs: Design, Implementation and Experiments
2016
Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2016 WSN is an extensive field of research and a core technology which is adopted for monitoring and data assembling, used in various applications. Traditionally in a WSN, communication is performed in the fashion of single packet per transmission which produces high energy consumption and longer delay. Therefore, we introduce a novel approach by designing a system which applies packet aggregation in TelosB sensor motes using Contiki platform. In this approach, we assemble multiple packets together and send them in an aggregated frame towards the sink which can reduce the number of transmissions, energ…
Sequential design of multioverlapping controllers for structural vibration control of tall buildings under seismic excitation
2012
In this article, a computationally effective strategy to obtain multioverlapping controllers via the inclusion principle is applied to design a state-feedback multioverlapping linear-quadratic regulator controller for a 20-story building. The proposed semidecentralized controller only requires state information of neighboring stories to compute the corresponding control actions. This particular information exchange configuration allows introducing a dramatic reduction in the transmission range required for a wireless implementation of the communications system. More specifically, just a one-story transmission range is required by the proposed multioverlapping controller, while a full-buildi…
Introducing Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Textile Engineering Education and Assessing its Influence on Six Sigma Project Implementation
2012
The purpose of this paper is to explore the methodology that has adopted to implement PBL in textile engineering education at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (LBUS) which also highlights its potential influence on Six Sigma projects that has implemented in a textile manufacturing industry. The function of both PBL and Six Sigma approaches is to solve the problems by executing projects in a systematic way. Structurally, they are quite similar in nature. Many academic institutes around the world are currently introducing PBL to enhance the quality of higher education. On the other hand manufacturing units are trying to shorten their Six Sigma project duration, but interconnection between b…
Study of the Audio Susceptibility in Parallel Power Processing With a High-Power Topology
2009
In this paper, the audio susceptibility characteristic of a high-efficiency nonisolated topology that processes only a part of the total power delivery is analyzed. Since the proposed topology presents a direct path from input to output, the effect of the input voltage ripple at the output voltage has been studied. The effect on the audio susceptibility of the values and disposition of the components and the effect of their parasitic elements must be taken into account. Due to this study, the analytical expression of the audio susceptibility and the design criteria to improve it have been obtained.
Energy certification of buildings: A comparative analysis of progress towards implementation in European countries
2010
Abstract The Energy Performance Building Directive (Directive 2002/91/EC) introduced the compulsory energy certification of buildings in the EU from 2006 and it has played a key role in the common policy to monitor and reduce energy consumption. In order to assess the experience gained in this field in Europe overall, and in particular against the highly diverse settings of the different European nations, this paper examines the extent to which the Directive has been implemented by the 27 EU Member States. This is done via a comparative analysis assisted by two different indicators: of uniformity and of excellence. The measure of uniformity makes it possible to assess the degree of harmony …
