Team autonomy, organizational commitment and company performance - a study in the retail trade
2014
The study focuses on the relationship between perceived team autonomy and company performance through highlighting organizational commitment as a mediating factor in this relationship. Data collected in 2007 came from 25 small-sized companies in the retail trade, covering both the employer and employee levels (n = 369). This study aims to shed light on the following questions: first, is team autonomy associated with organizational commitment and company performance? Second, does commitment mediate the relationship between team autonomy and company performance? Results indicated that team autonomy was both directly and indirectly positively associated with company performance. Furthermore, o…
Work-to-personal-life conflict among dual and single-career expatriates
2017
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore if an expatriate’s career situation at the level of the couple (single career couple (SCC)/dual career couple (DCC)) is related to the expatriate’s work-to-personal-life conflict (WLC) and if the expatriate’s gender is related to WLC. The authors also investigate if the level of WLC is different for men and women in a DCC or SCC (interaction). Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted among 393 Finnish expatriates who were in a relationship and were working. A moderated hierarchical regression was utilized in the data analysis. Findings Gender or DCC/SCC status was not separately related to WLC but an interaction effect between gend…
Measuring and reporting confiscated firms' (social) business value
2019
This study highlights the peculiar aspects of the business valuation process involving firms confiscated from the Mafia organisation, by pointing out some criteria to guide the selection of the appropriate valuation method. We identify some preliminary operational proposals for drawing up an effective valuation report taking social and ethical factors into account. Based on an empirical analysis carried out on a sample of Italian firm valuation reports publicly available, we find that the main business valuation choices are not explained in an in-depth manner and that there are many differences between the valuation reports and the prescriptive content proposed. Theoretical implications may…
Employability and job insecurity: The role of personal resources on work-related stress
2021
This study is aimed to assess the effect of both employability and personal resources, in terms of pro-activity and self-efficacy, on the relationship between job insecurity and psycho-social distress. Using survey data from 211 participants, among employed, unemployed and workers in transition, we analyzed the incidence of employability, pro-activity and self-efficacy on psycho-social distress. Our results showed that the above-mentioned variables significantly differed by participants’ gender and age. The structural theoretical model proposed to assess the significance of the hypothesized paths exhibited good fit with the data. Thus, all our hypotheses were supported. Findings are in line…
Cognitive structuring and placebo effect
2017
Abstract In much of the research concerning the placebo phenomenon, the idea that placebo effects may vary in strength depending on a patient's personal characteristics or traits has been investigated. Findings regarding possible personality differences in placebo response, however, are conflicting and non-systematic. In this article a new theoretical attempt to explain the placebo phenomenon is offered. The authors postulate that the power of the placebo effect is moderated by the extent of use of cognitive structuring, which in turn is influenced by the interaction between the individuals' level of need for cognitive closure and their ability to achieve this state. To test this assumption…
Dynamiques de classe et efficacité scolaire
2003
The present research aims at describing the efficiency of teaching practices involved in dynamic "teaching-training" processes. Our main approach consisted in relating in-class-monitoring to the results of knowledge-acquisition by pupils so as to better explain through what means the pupils’ knowledge and competence are acquired. At a theoretical level this implies combining the "process-product" paradigm along with the "ecological" paradigm [ 1]. Results obtained indicate that bringing together the analysis of teaching practices with the evaluation of their impact "which are still limited to an exploratory stage" are a method well-worth pursuing. [ 1] See above the general introduction to …
Roman quarries of the Iberian Peninsula: "Anasol" and "Anasol-type".
2007
The Iberian peninsula is rich in marble, both white and coloured, of excellent quality, used in the past (Pliny NH, XXXVI, II) and also at the present time as material for building and decoration. Many types of these marbles are similar to some, better known, Greek, Italian, Egyptian and Asian marbles. During the Roman Empire “ marmor carystium ” was extensively used. Taking into account the great similarity of this marble with the “ anasol ” and “ anasol ”-types mined in Spain and Portugal, this work presents a minero-petrographic, chemical and geochemical characterisation of these lithotypes, aiming at finding parameters to distinguish them from the better-known Greek and Italian “ cipoll…
A “Swedish” actuarial balance for a notional defined contribution pension scheme with disability and minimum pension benefits
2017
This article proposes a “Swedish” type actuarial balance sheet (ABS) for a notional defined contribution (NDC) scheme with disability and minimum pension benefits. The proposed ABS splits the pension system in two parts: the pure NDC part and the redistributive part, which includes the assets and liabilities originating from non-contributory rights. The article contains a numerical example that sheds light on the real applicability of our proposal. The model has practical implications that could be of interest to policy-makers, given that it integrates actuarial and social aspects of public pensions and discloses the real cost of redistribution through minimum pensions.
Neuromuscular disorders and non compaction
2010
Abstract For neurological disorders we consider every possible affection of the central nervous system or neuro-muscular junction, in the presence of complex syndromes as well, such as Cornelia De Lange syndrome or any other. In our experience the incidence of neurological or neuromuscular envolment in patients affected by noncompaction is low. An incidence of comorbidities higher than 20% is not recorded in any centre, in published experiences. Data of the Vienna group could be likely influenced by selection bias (second level centre) or territorial genetic factors, or could depend on higher sensibility of used diagnostic techniques of neurological disease. But, if it was so, in our opinio…
