Chromogenic Detection of Nerve Agent Mimics by Mass Transport Control at the Surface of Bifunctionalized Silica Nanoparticles

2010

Chemical warfare (CW) agents are toxic chemicals that have been used in several terrorist attacks in recent years. Among CW species, nerve agents are probably the most dangerous; their high toxicity and facile synthesis underscores the need to detect these lethal compounds with quick, reliable procedures. Analytical methods based on enzymatic assays and physical measurements have generally been used to detect these hazards. However, these protocols usually have limitations such as low selectivity, poor portability, and a certain level of complexity. In recent years, several chromogenic and fluorogenic sensors, and reagents for the detection of nerve agents have been described. For instance,…

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF ITALIAN CITRUS BASED PRODUCTS. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS AND IMPROVMENT SCENARIOS

2010

Though many studies concern the agro-food sector in the EU and Italy, and its environmental impacts, literature is quite lacking in works regarding LCA application on citrus products. This paper represents one of the first studies on the environmental impacts of citrus products in order to suggest feasible strategies and actions to improve their environmental performance. In particular, it is part of a research aimed to estimate environmental burdens associated with the production of the following citrus-based products: essential oil, natural juice and concentrated juice from oranges and lemons. The life cycle assessment of these products, published in a previous paper, had highlighted sign…

A class of imprimitive groups

2010

We classify imprimitive groups inducing the alternating group A4 on the set of blocks, with the inertia subgroup satisfying some very natural geometrical conditions which force the group to operate linearly.

Improving color correction across camera and illumination changes by contextual sample selection

2012

International audience; In many tasks of machine vision applications, it is important that recorded colors remain constant, in the real world scene, even under changes of the illuminants and the cameras. Contrary to the human vision system, a machine vision system exhibits inadequate adaptability to the variation of lighting conditions. Automatic white bal- ance control available in commercial cameras is not sufficient to pro- vide reproducible color classification. We address this problem of color constancy on a large image database acquired with varying digi- tal cameras and lighting conditions. A device-independent color repre- sentation may be obtained by applying a chromatic adaptation…

Parte III – I fattori della produzione agricola: Capitolo VI, 6.1. Il lavoro in agricoltura

2023

Completeness and timeliness: Cancer registries could/should improve their performance.

2015

Abstract Cancer registries must provide complete and reliable incidence information with the shortest possible delay for use in studies such as comparability, clustering, cancer in the elderly and adequacy of cancer surveillance. Methods of varying complexity are available to registries for monitoring completeness and timeliness. We wished to know which methods are currently in use among cancer registries, and to compare the results of our findings to those of a survey carried out in 2006. Methods In the framework of the EUROCOURSE project, and to prepare cancer registries for participation in the ERA-net scheme, we launched a survey on the methods used to assess completeness, and also on t…

Editorial Note The path of complexity science: from theory to managerial practice

2012

The application of complexity science to business has always been a diicult task because it is not easy to demonstrate the relevance of complexity theories to practicing managers. We accepted this challenge with this Special Issue, and I think we are giving a good con- tribution in this sense.
