BMC Public Health

2022

Background In the past decades, climate change has been impacting human lives and health via extreme weather and climate events and alterations in labour capacity, food security, and the prevalence and geographical distribution of infectious diseases across the globe. Climate change and health indicators (CCHIs) are workable tools designed to capture the complex set of interdependent interactions through which climate change is affecting human health. Since 2015, a novel sub-set of CCHIs, focusing on climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability indicators (CCIEVIs) has been developed, refined, and integrated by Working Group 1 of the “Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health an…

Reporting heterogeneity in health: an extended latent class approach

2012

This article explores how individual socio-economic characteristics affect unobserved heterogeneity in self-reporting behaviour and health production using a multivariate finite mixture model. Results show a positive relationship between objective and subjective observable health indicators and true health and support the existence of self-reporting bias related to socio-economic characteristics and individual life styles.

2021

(1) Background: The use of social media has become an integral part of adolescents’ daily lives. However, the intensive use of social media can develop into a health-threatening addiction, but unfavourable health consequences can occur even with less use. Social media user groups categorized as no-risk, moderate risk (of developing problematic behaviour), and problematic use were examined with reference to their prevalence, their associations with individual determinants and health, and the increased health risk between groups. (2) Methods: The Finnish nationally representative HBSC data (persons aged 11, 13, and 15, n = 3408) and descriptive and binary logistic regression analysis were app…

Do different models induce changes in mortality indicators? That is a key question for extending the Lee-Carter model

2021

[EN] The parametric model introduced by Lee and Carter in 1992 for modeling mortality rates in the USA was a seminal development in forecasting life expectancies and has been widely used since then. Different extensions of this model, using different hypotheses about the data, constraints on the parameters, and appropriate methods have led to improvements in the model's fit to historical data and the model's forecasting of the future. This paper's main objective is to evaluate if differences between models are reflected in different mortality indicators' forecasts. To this end, nine sets of indicator predictions were generated by crossing three models and three block-bootstrap samples with …

DIETA GLUTEN-FREE (DGF) IN SOGGETTI CELIACI E QUALITA' DELLA VITA

2015

Key indicators and information systems for the evaluation and planning of birthing hospital services

2016

The evaluation, monitoring and management of hospital of birth services requires the availability of a set of information and tools able to orient decision making process, in order to ensure an adequate level of quality of services provided. Given the complexity of birth-related services, a set of indicators related with the multiple dimensions of healthcare quality are required; these include: volume of activity, complexity of birth, territorial distribution and residents-hospital distance, infrastructures, and inter-hospital transfers. The present Paper proposes an integrated system of indicators for the promotion and improvement of birth-related services in the Sicily region, which takes…

Development of a conceptual model of sustainable building from a university

2021

Introduction: In this paper, the authors aim is to develop a conceptual model that aims to facilitate the processes of implementing sustainability and / or assessment of sustainable performance in a Higher Education Building (HEB). The conceptual model could also be used to compare two or more buildings of higher education in terms of sustainability. Methodology: The authors started the scientific research with the literature review in order to identify and analyze the most relevant aspects that are frequently assess and could influencing the components of sustainability in higher education institutions. These aspects were clustered into categories and for each of them were established obje…

Screening Investments to Reduce the Risk of Hydrologic Failures in the Headwork System Supplying Apulia (Italy) – Role of Economic Evaluation and Ope…

2014

The paper introduces and applies a methodology to screen investments aimed at reducing water supply risks due to hydrologic failures in headwork systems for municipal use, based on the principles of cost-benefit analysis. As risk includes both the probability of a failure and its effect, the methodology combines a simulation module of the system, fed by a stochastic hydrologic input to reproduce the probability distribution of the failures, with a metric for supply failure damage provided by the price – demand relationship for municipal water. Benefits are assessed as the averted damage compared to a base case without investments. This approach is then combined with the classic discounted c…

Comparing local structures of spatio-temporal point processes on linear networks

2022

We employ the Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions on linear networks to build a statistical test for local second-order structure. This allows to identify differences in the spatio-temporal clustering behaviour of two point patterns, a point pattern of interest and a background one, both occurring on the same linear network. We illustrate the proposed methodology analysing a traffic-related problem.

A new Intellectual capital framework in the no profit sector

2014

Intellectual capital (IC) is a key driver in value creation. According with the above more and more companies, for profit as well as no profit organizations (NPOs), direct their attention to new tools able to communicate to the stakeholders their intangible assets as value creator driver. IC in for-profit companies, but especially in NPOs is positively correlated with the performance. For this reason, during the last years the interest in the importance of IC in NPOs is increased. IC report becomes a fundamental tool in the disclosure of the NPOs’activities. Nowdays is necessary to use a correct frame work to represent the IC in terms of knowledge, skill, procedures and relationship spread …
