Long-lasting remission of primary hepatic lymphoma and hepatitis C virus infection achieved by the alpha-interferon treatment

2004

Primary hepatic lymphoma is a rare but well-defined lymphoma entity that often pursues an aggressive clinical course. Most cases have been described in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease patients. Although anthracycline-based chemotherapy has been reported to be highly effective, the best therapeutic strategy has not been defined yet. The prognosis is dismal especially in patients treated with chemotherapy alone or when an advanced liver disease is present. Herein, we describe a case of primary hepatic large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, in a patient with HCV chronic infection. After a minor response with eight cycles of CHOP chemotherapy, a complete and sustained remiss…

The significance of premature luteinization in an oocyte-donation programme

2006

BACKGROUND: Several evidences indicate that premature luteinization (PL) may affect IVF outcome. The primary end-point of the present study was to verify the effect of PL on the pregnancy rate (PR) of our oocytedonation programme. METHODS: PL was defined as serum progesterone ³1.2 ng/ml on the day of HCG. We analysed retrospectively 240 oocyte-donation cycles in which 120 women donated twice, with PL in the first donation cycle and no PL in the following one, acting as its own control. Recipients (n = 240) were divided in two groups according to the presence of PL (n = 120) or not (n = 120). Both groups were compared regarding donor cycle parameters and recipient cycle outcome. RESULTS: The…

Effectiveness and Safety of Ustekinumab in Ulcerative Colitis: Real-world Evidence from the ENEIDA Registry

2021

Abstract Background and Aims The development programm UNIFI has shown promising results of ustekinumab in ulcerative colitis [UC] treatment which should be confirmed in clinical practice. We aimed to evaluate the durability, effectiveness, and safety of ustekinumab in UC in real life. Methods Patients included in the prospectively maintained ENEIDA registry, who received at least one intravenous dose of ustekinumab due to active UC [Partial Mayo Score [PMS]>2], were included. Clinical activity and effectiveness were defined based on PMS. Short-term response was assessed at Week 16. Results A total of 95 patients were included. At Week 16, 53% of patients had response [including 35% o…

Inorganic polymeric phosphate/polyphosphate as an inducer of alkaline phosphatase and a modulator of intracellular Ca2+ level in osteoblasts (SaOS-2 …

2011

Inorganic polymeric phosphate is a physiological polymer that accumulates in bone cells. In the present study osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells were exposed to this polymer, complexed in a 2:1 stoichiometric ratio with Ca(2+), polyP (Ca(2+) salt). At a concentration of 100 μM, polyP (Ca(2+) salt) caused a strong increase in the activity of the alkaline phosphatase and also an induction of the steady-state expression of the gene encoding this enzyme. Comparative experiments showed that polyP (Ca(2+) salt) can efficiently replace β-glycerophosphate in the in vitro hydroxyapatite (HA) biomineralization assay. In the presence of polyP (Ca(2+) salt) the cells extensively form HA crystallites, which r…

Chiral mesophases of hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals

2020

The chiral induction in hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals is investigated. The experimental study was accompanied by detailed density functional theory calculations and variable-temperature solid-state deuteron NMR measurements indicating that interactions between the linking groups of the hydrogen-bond accepting unit play a key role in the chiral induction.

Magneto-Electro-Elastic Bimorph Analysis by the Boundary Element Method

2008

The influence of the magnetic configuration on the behavior of magneto-electro-elastic bimorph beams is analyzed by using a boundary element approach. The problem is formulated by using the generalized displacements and generalized tractions. The boundary integral equation formulation is obtained by extending the reciprocity theorem to magneto-electro-elastic problems; it is numerically implemented by using the boundary element method multidomain technique to address problems involving nonhomogeneous configurations. Results under different magnetic configurations are compared highlighting the characteristic features of magnetopiezoelectric behavior particularly focusing on the link between …

Temperature- and illumination-induced charge-state change in divacancies of GaTe

2010

Temperature-dependent positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements have been performed in GaTe samples, with and without illumination. The average lifetime shows a monotonous temperature evolution but the lifetime decomposition shows a rich behavior. It is produced by two types of vacancy defects. The vacancy-type defects characterized by their shorter lifetime change their charge state below 100 K and when illuminating with light of an energy of 0.8 eV.

A new definition of well-behaved discrimination functions

2009

Abstract A discrimination function shows the probability or degree with which stimuli are discriminated from each other when presented in pairs. In a previous publication [Kujala, J.V., & Dzhafarov, E.N. (2008). On minima of discrimination functions. Journal of Mathematical Psychology , 52 , 116–127] we introduced a condition under which the conformity of a discrimination function with the law of Regular Minimality (which says, essentially, that “being least discriminable from” is a symmetric relation) implies the constancy of the function’s minima (i.e., the same level of discriminability of every stimulus from the stimulus least discriminable from it). This condition, referred to as “well…

Mentoring styles and novice teachers’ well-being: The role of basic need satisfaction

2021

Abstract School-based mentoring is a key component of support during the challenging teacher induction phase, but different counseling approaches vary in their effectiveness in fostering novices’ well-being. This study investigates effects of two distinct mentoring approaches on emotional exhaustion by considering their potential to address mentees’ basic needs. Data stem from 579 beginning teachers enrolled in the German practical training period. Structural equation modeling indicates that constructivist-oriented mentoring lowers level of exhaustion by supporting mentees’ autonomy need satisfaction. Results do not indicate an effect of transmission-oriented mentoring on mentees’ well-bein…
