The "Tokyo" consensus on propeller flaps
2011
Background: Overthepastfewyears, theuseofpropellerflaps, whichbasetheir blood supply on subcutaneous tissue or isolated perforators, has become in- creasingly popular. Because no consensus has yet been reached on terminology and nomenclature of the propeller flap, different and confusing uses of the term can be found in the literature. Methods: Inthisarticle, theauthorsreporttheconsensusonthedefinitionand classification of propeller flaps reached by the authors that gathered at the First Tokyo Meeting on Perforator and Propeller Flaps in June of 2009. Some peculiar aspects of the surgical technique are discussed. Results: A propeller flap can be defined as an “island flap that reaches the reci…
Our Definition of Propeller Flaps and Their Classification
2020
AbstractThe term propeller flap was introduced for the first time by Hyakusoku to define an island flap, based on a subcutaneous pedicle hub, that was rotated 90 degrees to correct scar contractures due to burns. With the popularization of perforator flaps, the propeller movement was applied for the first time to a skin island vascularized only by an isolated perforator, and the terms propeller and perforator flap were used together. Thereafter, the surgical technique of propeller flaps evolved and new applications developed. With the “Tokyo consensus,” we proposed a definition and a classification schema for propeller flaps. A propeller flap was defined as an “island flap that reaches the …
<title>Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a diagnostic tool in patients with suspected stroke or traumatic brain injury</title>
2001
Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) as a diagnostic tool in patients with suspected stroke or brain injury S. Goldberg, C. Lott, M. Ostermeyer, H.-J. Hennes Absorption of Near-Infrared (NIR) light in the brain is mainly caused by hemoglobin. Superficial intracranial hematoma with a higher concentration of hemoglobin causes a higher absorption in NIRS. The existence of hemorrhage can be demonstrated by the difference of optical density, comparing identical measuring points at both hemispheres of the brain: absorption of NIR light is greater at the side of the hemorrhage, causing less reflection in NIRS. In a prospective, blinded study, 100 patients who were scheduled for CCT-scan for brain inj…

This study investigated the use of performance-enhancing substances in recreational triathletes who were competing in German races at distances ranging from super-sprint to long-distance, as per the International Triathlon Union. The use of legal drugs and over-the-counter supplements over the previous year, painkillers over the previous 3 months, and the potential three-month prevalence of physical doping and or cognitive doping in this group were assessed via an anonymous questionnaire. The Randomised Response Technique (RRT) was implemented for sensitive questions regarding “prescription drugs […] for the purpose of performance enhancement […] only available at a pharmacy or on the black…
Applying Minimalism in the Real World: Results From a Workshop
2020
Minimalism is a user-centered, contextual and goal-oriented approach to technical communication originally developed by John M. Carroll (1990). In minimalism, the aim is to produce user documentation that focuses on the user’s needs, helps the user recover from error situations, and strengthens the user’s skills in working with the system (Carroll & van der Meij 1995: 245). The challenge with minimalism has been its practical application: although user-centeredness – the core of minimalism – is the key issue in technical communication, the abstract nature of the approach and its focus on software documentation has made it difficult to apply in industry settings (Virtaluoto, Suojanen & Isohe…
Vastuullisuusarvot suomalaisten tekstiiliyritysten tarinoissa
2022
Textile industry causes significant negative environmental and social impacts. Sustainability in the industry has lately yielded more and more research interest, however, sustainability communication is underresearched area. In this paper, we will focus on sustainability communications in the Finnish textile industry through the stories of companies in their webpages. Storytelling has traditionally been a mode of transmitting, producing and reproducing the culture. Stories produce a structure in the reality, explain phenomena and concretize abstract concepts. In this research, we approach the stories as rhetorical devises, which address, attract and connect the reader to the company behind …
Effects of Personal Traits on Generation Y Consumers' Attitudes Toward the Use of Mobile Devices for Communication and Commerce
2012
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of young adult consumers’ personal traits (high-tech involvement, experiment proclivity, and fashion/brand leadership) on their perceptions of and attitudes toward using mobile devices for communications and commerce. The integrated stimulus-organism-responses paradigm (Fiore & Kim, 2007) served as the overarching framework, combining the uses and gratifications theory (Blumler & Katz, 1974) and the extended technology acceptance model (Kim, Ma, & Park, 2009). A convenience sample of 504 college students in 2 U. S. universities provided usable responses to our survey. Causal modeling analysis results showed that personal trait varia…
Chemical-Based Methodologies to Extend the Shelf Life of Fresh Fish—A Review
2021
Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most…
Linking bean-to-bar to sustainable entrepreneurship
2017
The increasing growth and recognition of bean-to-bar chocolate production have led to some people calling it a ”movement” or ”revolution”. The entrepreneurs championing bean-to-bar assert that their approach provides better and innovative services to both cocoa farmers (growers) and consumers. In essence, they are meaningfully contributing to the sustainable transformation of the cocoa industry. Furthermore, researchers agree that a concept that combines elements from both sustainability and entrepreneurship is called sustainable entrepreneurship. Therefore, are bean-to-bar chocolate producers sustainable entrepreneurs? In an attempt to answer this question, this thesis explores the links b…
Kosmētikas industrijas ilgtspējīgās attīstības reklāmu multimodālā analīze
2020
Pētījuma korpuss sastāvēja no divpadsmit ilgtspējības reklāmām no dažādiem kosmētikas zīmoliem Latvijā, Amerik…
