Life-Cycle Costing Decision-Making Methodology and Urban Intersection Design: Modelling and Analysis for a Circular City

2021

The importance of being circular reflects one of the key concepts of the life-cycle thinking that promotes the sustainable production of goods and services. If it is true that the analysis of the product life-cycle is fundamental to optimize the use of resources and to plan for the future reduction of adverse effects on urban environment, it is also true that there are still several barriers covering conceptual and practical issues which hinder the building of shared approaches for the economic evaluation of infrastructure projects. The chapter presents a case study where the Life-Cycle Cost methodology is used to compare three alternative intersection projects based on their total life-cyc…

2019

Kyberturvallisuusstrategian vision mukaan Suomen tulee kyetä suojaamaan elintärkeät toimintonsa kyberuhkaa vastaan kaikissa tilanteissa. Terveydenhuolto on yksi elintärkeistä toiminnoista. Terveystoimiala on kyberhyökkäysten top-5-listalla ensimmäisenä. Hyökkäysten keskeisin motivaatio on potilastietojen arvo pimeillä markkinoilla. Vuonna 2015 varastettiin yli satamiljoonaa potilastietoa, jotka sisältävät rikollisille arvokkaita tietoja, kuten luottokorttinumeroita, työnantajatietoja ja sairaushistoriatietoja. Tässä artikkelissa kuvataan terveydenhuoltoon liittyviä kyberuhkia, kyberhaavoittuvuuksia ja toteutuneita kyberhyökkäyksiä kybermaailman eri ulottuvuudet kattaen. Tarkastelussa käytet…

Local Equalization and Wide Areas Land Planning in Syracuse

2016

Abstract The implementation process of the Syracuse's Master Plan is characterized by the widespread use of “urban negotiation”. The Municipality has drawn up a protocol aimed at obtaining areas for facilities and public infrastructure in different areas basing on the rule of the transfer of a portion of land in return for the building permission for the remaining part. Since these areas are variously characterized, the negotiation process may not be fair to Municipality or convenient to land owners. Basing on an equalization pattern, this study provides, for each area, the indexes of fairness and convenience, and, more specifically, the difference between the market value of the areas achi…

Towards a resilience management guideline — Cities as a starting point for societal resilience

2019

Unexpected crises and risks affect the urban population. Critical infrastructure dependency, climate change and social dynamics have captured the attention of city decision makers across different disciplines, sectors, and scales. Addressing these challenges mandates an increase in resilience. This article presents the development of the novel European Resilience Management Guideline (ERMG) developed by the European H2020 Smart Mature Resilience (SMR) project. It encompasses five supporting tools for city resilience. The purpose of this article is threefold. First, it describes the extensive co-creation methods used to establish, validate and test the five ERMG tools as collaborations among…

The impact of senior management involvement, organisational commitment and group efficacy on ITIL implementation benefits

2014

Published version of an article from the journal: Information Systems and e-Business Management. Also available from Springerlink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10257-014-0253-4 Senior management involvement, organisational commitment and group efficacy are expected to have a positive impact on Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) implementation benefits. Specifically, more involvement, commitment and efficacy should produce greater achievement. Analysing data from a survey of 446 Nordic ITIL experts, this paper examines the relationships between these predictor factors and benefits, and investigates which is most critical. This study verifies the importance of all factors, but…

Città, economia circolare e pianificazione urbanistica

2019

Embedding “roadside equipment” into environmental assessment of transportation system: the case of safety barriers

2015

The work arises from the consideration that the environmental impact of a road cannot be limited to the analysis of its constituent materials, even if correctly analyzed in their life cycle. In fact, a given road not only consists of the pavement and subgrade, but also includes several different components and accessories (e.g. road marking, drainages, safety barriers, etc.) that contribute to set a road infrastructure in operative conditions. As a matter of fact, only limited attention has been paid in the scientific literature to roadside components, unlike pavement and traffic flow. In the present work, the environmental burden of one of these components, i.e. the safety barrier, has bee…

Innovation in the Rural Areas and the Linkage with the Quintuple Helix Model

2016

Abstract In this paper we analyze some specific conditions for local development. Our interest is oriented towards a multidimensional aspect of peripheral and rural areas. The rural areas considered as a productive system reflects a strong relationship between the agriculture and the other economic activities, In addition eco-systems must be protected and enhanced to develop innovation models that propose new roles and responsibilities for a new development vision. Following the implementation of the Smart Specialization Strategy and the Quintuple Helix Model this paper underlines the importance of connecting the innovation process with rural territories. We have considered some environment…

Insecure Firmware and Wireless Technologies as “Achilles’ Heel” in Cybersecurity of Cyber-Physical Systems

2022

In this chapter, we analyze cybersecurity weaknesses in three use-cases of real-world cyber-physical systems: transportation (aviation), remote explosives and robotic weapons (fireworks pyrotechnics), and physical security (CCTV). The digitalization, interconnection, and IoT-nature of cyber-physical systems make them attractive targets. It is crucial to ensure that such systems are protected from cyber attacks, and therefore it is equally important to study and understand their major weaknesses. peerReviewed
