Decolonial Thinking and Refugees’ Stories. The Queens of Syria Documentary (2014)

2019

As an important stimulus for the international mushrooming of artistic creativity in public spaces, counter narratives by displaced people are contributing to the reframing of the political and sociolinguistic contemporary framework, where migrant identities are fighting to gain a voice. A counter wave of audiovisual productions based on aesthetic discourse has emerged within territories that seem to be losing their humanity with respect to migration issues, and seem to publicly reinforce forms of spectacularisation. Against a backdrop of international political conflict, where migrants and dispossessed refugees are nameless and cannot speak, visual and performative arts have taken on a dec…

I Cannot Place You: Dementia and the Pandemic Experience in The Visiting Hour by Frank McGuinness

2021

This paper presents a new play by Frank McGuinness, a play which was streamed to audiences in April 2021 and published a few weeks later. Set in contemporary Ireland, it focuses on two themes which seem to preoccupy its author: dementia, to which he devoted another play, Hanging Gardens and the consequences of living in a time of Pandemic. In particular, I argue, McGuinness indirectly seems to address an important question: how can literature and theatre offer an opportunity for reflecting about what is happening around us? Can literature help us to better understand and face the world? The play foregrounds the restorative power of emotional authenticity as we see a father and his daughter …

A corpus-based discourse analysis of security in White House press briefings

2016

White House press briefings are daily meetings between the White House press secretary and the press. As one of the main official channels of communication for the White House, they play a crucial role in the administration communication strategies (Kumar 2007). Security has always been a key concept in political debate (Buzan 2000), particularly after the events of 9/11 and the rising of a new regime of international security (Fairclough 2007). Our analysis of a corpus of press briefings ranging across five presidencies, from Bill Clinton to Barack Obama, will focus on the lexical item security from a modern diachronic corpus-assisted discourse studies perspective (Partington 2010). The an…

Analyzing American Public Diplomacy: The case of Brand USA. When Tourism becomes an Ideological Tool

2016

This paper aims to study the communicative strategies used in the American campaign of public diplomacy. Our objective in this work is twofold: first, to verify whether behind the action of rebranding the image of the U.S.A. there is an ideological agenda; second, to identify the communication dynamics - both textual and semiotic - which have contributed to make the campaign successful and whether they are in line with the communicative profile of the U.S.A., adopting a handful of current models in intercultural studies.

‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

2013

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. This leads us to determine the extent of the differences in t…

Linguistic Competences in the Mediation System: increasing Language Awareness and Developing Communication Skills

2018

Over the last decades lawyers and experts in the field of law have increasingly moved beyond advisory and representative roles towards neutral, non-aligned interventions, and have developed new professional techniques in aid of new settlement strategies. Despite cultural diversity and variations over time, the different contexts within which informal principles of justice have often been found reveal a prevalent trend to create alternatives to adjudication for handling disputes, such as negotiation and mediation processes. The present analysis focuses on the linguistic skills and communication strategies that experts need to know and apply when conducting a mediation. The aim is to demonstr…

The Discursive Construction of European Identity: Stylistic Analysis of "Text in Context"

2010

The Draft Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe submitted to the European Council meeting in Thessaloniki on June 2003 was intended to repeal by a single instrument all the existing European treaties (about 16 Treaties enacted between 1951-ECSC Treaty and 2001-Treaty of Nice, with the exception of the Euratom Treaty). Indeed, the ratification by all the Member States of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe was necessary in order to enter it into force. Because of the difficulties and problems faced in ratifying the Treaty, the European Council decided in 2005 to start a ‘period of reflection’ on the future of the European Union. In particular, at the European Council me…

Cancellanda

2004

2011

Published in the early 1950s, The Grass is Singing (1950), the first work by Doris Lessing (who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007), through the deconstruction of certain normative characters traditionally attributed to Englishness, anticipates in its narrative plot some of those founding issues that, in the decades to come, would be explored both by the theoretical-critical writings of Second Wave Feminism and within that complex study field which became known over the Seventies, such as (post-) colonial studies. In the novel, the body of the white colonial woman living in the colonies is depicted as the site of opposite tensions and the traditional homogeneity of the group…
