10 Gb/s transmission and thermo-optic resonance tuning in silicon-plasmonic waveguide platform

2011

The first system-level experimental results of hybrid Si-DLSPP structures incorporated into a SOI chip are reported. We demonstrate over 7nm thermo-optical tuning of a Si-Plasmonic racetrack-resonator and verify error-free 10Gb/s transmission through 60um Si-Plasmonic waveguide.

Silicon Single Electron Transistors with Single and Multi Dot Characteristics

2000

AbstractSilicon single electron transistors (SET) with side gate have been fabricated on a heavily doped silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. Samples demonstrate two types of characteristics: some of them demonstrate multiple dot behavior and one demonstrates single dot behavior in a wide temperature range. SETs demonstrate oscillations of drain-source current and changes in the width of the Coulomb blockade region with change of gate voltage at least up to 100 K. At temperature below 20 K long-term oscillations (relaxation) of source-drain current after switching the gate voltage has been observed in both multiple dot and single dot samples. Illumination affects both the characteristics o…

Single electron transistor fabricated on heavily doped silicon-on-insulator substrate

2001

Experiments on side-gated silicon single electron transistors (SET) fabricated on a heavily doped thin silicon-on-insulator substrate are reported. Some of the devices showed single-island-like and some multi-island-like behaviour, but the properties of individual samples changed with time. Single-electron gate modulation was observable up to T=100 K, at least. A slow response of SET current to a large change in gate voltage was observed, but the process speeded up under illumination.

Giant Edelstein effect in Topological-Insulator--Graphene heterostructures

2017

The control of a ferromagnet's magnetization via only electric currents requires the efficient generation of current-driven spin-torques. In magnetic structures based on topological insulators (TIs) current-induced spin-orbit torques can be generated. Here we show that the addition of graphene, or bilayer graphene, to a TI-based magnetic structure greatly enhances the current-induced spin density accumulation and significantly reduces the amount of power dissipated. We find that this enhancement can be as high as a factor of 100, giving rise to a giant Edelstein effect. Such a large enhancement is due to the high mobility of graphene (bilayer graphene) and to the fact that the graphene (bil…

Emergence of a metallic metastable phase induced by electrical current in Ca2RuO4

2019

A comprehensive study of the behavior of the Mott insulator ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ under electrical current drive is performed by combining two experimental probes: the macroscopic electrical transport and the microscopic x-ray diffraction. The resistivity, $\ensuremath{\rho}$, versus electric current density, $J$, and temperature, $T,\ensuremath{\rho}(J,T)$, resistivity map is drawn. In particular, the metastable state, induced between the insulating and the metallic thermodynamic states by current biasing ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{2}{\mathrm{RuO}}_{4}$ single crystals, is investigated. Such an analysis, combined with the study of the resulting ${\mathrm{RuO}}_{6}$ octahedra energy le…

Design and operation of CMOS-compatible electron pumps fabricated with optical lithography

2017

We report CMOS-compatible quantized current sources (electron pumps) fabricated with nanowires (NWs) on 300mm SOI wafers. Unlike other Al, GaAs or Si based metallic or semiconductor pumps, the fabrication does not rely on electron-beam lithography. The structure consists of two gates in series on the nanowire and the only difference with the SOI nanowire process lies in long (40nm) nitride spacers. As a result a single, silicide island gets isolated between the gates and transport is dominated by Coulomb blockade at cryogenic temperatures thanks to the small size and therefore capacitance of this island. Operation and performances comparable to devices fabricated using e-beam lithography is…

Catalyst-free vapour-solid technique for deposition of Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 nanowires/nanobelts with topological insulator properties.

2015

We present a simple two-stage vapour–solid synthesis method for the growth of bismuth chalcogenide (Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3) topological insulator nanowires/nanobelts by using Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 powders as source materials. During the first stage of the synthesis process nanoplateteles, serving as “catalysts” for further nanowire/nanobelt growth, are formed. At a second stage of the synthesis, the introduction of a N2 flow at 35 Torr pressure in the chamber induces the formation of free standing nanowires/nanobelts. The synthesised nanostructures demonstrate a layered single-crystalline structure and Bi : Se and Bi : Te ratios 40 : 60 at% for both Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 nanowires/nanobelts. The presence of…

Nonlinear higher-order polariton topological insulator

2020

We address the resonant response and bistability of the exciton-polariton corner states in a higher-order nonlinear topological insulator realized with kagome arrangement of microcavity pillars. Such states are resonantly excited and exist due to the balance between pump and losses, on the one hand, and between nonlinearity and dispersion in inhomogeneous potential landscape, on the other hand, for pump energy around eigen-energies of corresponding linear localized modes. Localization of the nonlinear corner states in a higher-order topological insulator can be efficiently controlled by tuning pump energy. We link the mechanism of corner state formation with symmetry of the truncated kagome…

Spatial quantum noise interferometry in expanding ultracold atom clouds

2005

It is ten years since the exotic form of matter known as a Bose–Einstein condensate was first created. It was the birth of ultra-low-temperature physics, and practitioners gathered last month in Banff, Canada, to celebrate and discuss the latest news, as Karen Fox reports. And this week a new development that could have a major impact in the field is announced. In the 1950s, Hanbury Brown and Twiss showed that it is possible to measure angular sizes of astronomical radio sources from correlations of signal intensities in independent detectors. ‘HBT interferometry’ later became a key technique in quantum optics, and now it has been harnessed to identify a quantum phase of ultracold bosonic a…

Entanglement control via reservoir engineering in ultracold atomic gases

2013

We study the entanglement of two impurity qubits immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) reservoir. This open quantum system is particularly interesting because the reservoir and system parameters are easily controllable and the reduced dynamics is highly non-Markovian. We show how the model allows for interpolation between a common dephasing scenario and an independent dephasing scenario by simply modifying the wavelength of the superlattice superposed to the BEC, and how this influences the dynamical properties of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence of very rich entanglement dynamics correspondent to different values of reservoir parameters, including phenomena such as entan…
