Early modern trade flows between smaller states : the Portuguese-Swedish trade in the eighteenth century as an example
2015
The eighteenth century was a period of many great power wars and competition for colonies. However, despite the turmoil, smaller nations were able to carve their niches in the international trade of the period. Examination of new sources, used in a comparative fashion, indicates that bilateral trade still has much to offer for the analysis of international trade history. The pattern of bilateral trade between Sweden and Portugal indicates that they were not equally dependent on that trade, and that the products traded varied over time. Usually bulk commodities dominated this trade, as each country focused on its core competencies. Overall, the volume of trade and the number of ships travell…
The integration of visual context information in facial emotion recognition in 5- to 15-year-olds.
2016
International audience; The current study investigated the role of congruent visual context information in the recognition of facial emotional expression in 190 participants from 5 to 15 years of age. Children performed a matching task that presented pictures with different facial emotional expressions (anger, disgust, happiness, fear, and sadness) in two conditions: with and without a visual context. The results showed that emotions presented with visual context information were recognized more accurately than those presented in the absence of visual context. The context effect remained steady with age but varied according to the emotion presented and the gender of participants. The findin…
Network reconstruction for trans acting genetic loci using multi-omics data and prior information.
2022
Background: Molecular measurements of the genome, the transcriptome, and the epigenome, often termed multi-omics data, provide an in-depth view on biological systems and their integration is crucial for gaining insights in complex regulatory processes. These data can be used to explain disease related genetic variants by linking them to intermediate molecular traits (quantitative trait loci, QTL). Molecular networks regulating cellular processes leave footprints in QTL results as so-called trans-QTL hotspots. Reconstructing these networks is a complex endeavor and use of biological prior information can improve network inference. However, previous efforts were limited in the types of priors…
Goal Construction, Reconstruction and Depressive Symptoms in a Life-Span Context: The Transition From School to Work
2002
This study focused on investigating the kinds of personal goals young adults have when they are faced with the transition from school to work; the extent to which they reconstruct these goals as a consequence of their success in dealing with this transition; and how their goals influence their depressive symptoms. In order to investigate these research questions, 250 young adults who were facing a transition from school to work were studied at three points of the transition process: while they were still at school; 8 months after their graduation; and 1.5 years after it. At each measurement point, they were asked to complete the Personal Project Analysis, a revised form of Beck's Depression…
Formal ontology and CAD integration with macro parametric approach
2017
ABSTRACTThis paper discusses an ontological integration framework in the context of mereotopological formal ontology and CAD systems. Based on a comprehensive literature review of current design knowledge management and formal ontology research works, the authors propose the integration framework that can incorporate design knowledge with CAD systems. The primary role of mereotopology in this research work is the formal representation of design knowledge for the 3D solid assembly models. Most of the existing research works about design ontology present an abstract form and often require significant additional efforts to be integrated into CAD systems. Thus, this work introduces a formal ont…
Analysis of negative-resistance oscillators with piecewise nonlinearity
1977
An iterative method of solution of negative-resistance oscillators with piecewise-analytical characteristics is presented. The method allows the determination of the frequency and the harmonic content of the waveform as a function of the circuit parameters and bias of the nonlinear device. An application of the method, extended to the second order, for a polynomial characteristic limited by two straight lines is also reported. The results are compared with those obtained by numerical integration.
Deployment of the ATLAS high level trigger
2005
The ATLAS combined test beam in the second half of 2004 saw the first deployment of the ATLAS high-level triggers (HLT). The next steps are deployment on the pre-series farms in the experimental area during 2005, commissioning and cosmics tests in 2006 and collisions in 2007. This paper reviews the experience gained in the test beam, describes the current status and discusses the further enhancements to be made. We address issues related to the dataflow, selection algorithms, testing, software distribution, installation and improvements
Technology-Enhanced Course in English Theoretical Grammar and Phonetics at the Tertiary Level
2021
The advancement of technologies and the recently forced lockdown by Covid-19 are bringing changes to the organisation of the learning process by accelerating the introduction of e-learning to create a learner-centred technology-based approach to English studies, thus stepping towards digital humanities. These trends initiated the institutional project Mobile and Desktop Software Integration in Bachelor and Master Study Programmes. The present study, using a questionnaire, elicits university students’ attitudes to the mobile applications and speech analysis software-based seminar activities in Moodle e-course in accordance with the blended learning model selected for the studies of theoretic…
An Adaptive Bayesian System for Context-Aware Data Fusion in Smart Environments
2017
The adoption of multi-sensor data fusion techniques is essential to effectively merge and analyze heterogeneous data collected by multiple sensors, pervasively deployed in a smart environment. Existing literature leverages contextual information in the fusion process, to increase the accuracy of inference and hence decision making in a dynamically changing environment. In this paper, we propose a context-aware, self-optimizing, adaptive system for sensor data fusion, based on a three-tier architecture. Heterogeneous data collected by sensors at the lowest tier are combined by a dynamic Bayesian network at the intermediate tier, which also integrates contextual information to refine the infe…
In-situ high spatial resolution LA-MC-ICPMS 230Th/U dating enables detection of small-scale age inversions in speleothems
2017
Abstract We present an in-situ method for Th and U isotope measurements by laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS) to determine possible age inversions of stalagmites, using a 213 nm Nd:YAG laser connected to an MC-ICPMS. Due to the low ion beam intensity of 230 Th (20–120 counts per second, cps), we carefully optimized the operating parameters to get highest possible ion beam intensities, i.e., laser fluence (25 J cm −2 ), spot size (110 μm), pulse repetition rate (20 Hz), scan speed (4 μm s −1 ), integration time (1000 s), and He and Ar gas flow (∼0.9 L min −1 and ∼0.6 L min −1 respectively). A precision (2 relative standard error, 2RSE) o…
