Achieving Fair Bandwidth Distribution in WiFi Networks: A Game Theoretical Approach

2011

International audience; Achieving fair bandwidth distribution among uplink and downlink ows in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure networks is a complex issue, due to the well-known features of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) which regulates the access to the shared medium. Indeed, the dynamic adaptation of the contention windows causes phenomena of short-term unfairness, while the use of homogeneous contention parameters among the contending nodes makes the aggregated downlink bandwidth equal to the uplink bandwidth of a single node. We propose a dynamic tuning of the contention parameters used by the nodes, based on simple network monitoring functionalities and rational strategies. Spe…

A Wireless Mesh Network-based System for Hotspots Deployment and Management

2007

In recent years Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) or hotspots, as they are commonly known, have emerged as a promising networking platform to extend network connectivity in public venues, providing local coverage for Internet applications on the move in urban areas and rural environments. Wireless hotspots using 802.11-based technology have popped up in corporate offices, coffeehouses, airports, restaurants and bookstores worldwide. For all their utility and ease of use the 802.11 wireless protocol, known as WiFi, has become the mobile connectivity mechanism of choice for business people, travelers, villagers, and everyone else. Unfortunately, even with the protocol's ease of use and its…

Experimental characterization and mitigation of turbulence induced signal fades within an ad hoc FSO network

2014

Optical beams propagating through the turbulent atmospheric channel suffer from both the attenuation and phase distortion. Since future wireless networks are envisaged to be deployed in the ad hoc mesh topology, this paper presents the experimental laboratory characterization of mitigation of turbulence induced signal fades for two ad hoc scenarios. Results from measurements of the thermal structure constant along the propagation channels, changes of the coherence lengths for different turbulence regimes and the eye diagrams for partially correlated turbulences in free space optical channels are discussed. Based on these results future deployment of optical ad hoc networks can be more strai…

New Technologies and Purchase Behaviour. An Analysis of the Determinant Variables in M-Shopping.

2009

Despite of the growing importance of mobile shopping in a lot of countries, there is still a lack of research work in this field. This paper aims to make an approximation of the M-shopper profile and identify the variables influencing purchase behaviour. Findings obtained from a representative sample of 2,343 Spanish Internet users show that the M-shopping decision can be predicted according to consumer age and experience as Internet user and shopper.

Digital Nomading and the Care of Place

2020

Recent years have seen advances in the development of information and communication infrastructure where portable devices enable their users to be “always on” – connected permanently with their social contacts, their work and the information scape of the Internet. This perpetual connectivity not only bridges different spheres of life on an information level, but also allows users to physically bring formerly spatially defined practices with her wherever they go. The ensuing delimitations can be interpreted as part of a “liquid modernity” and the practices of connected mobilities can be defined as “digital nomadicity”. This paper argues that these new mobility practices come with new place-m…

Internet Disclosure by Nonprofit Organizations: Empirical Evidence of Nongovernmental Organizations for Development in Spain

2009

This article examines the relevance of technology, and particularly the Internet, for the improvement of accountability and transparency in nonprofit organizations. The novelty of our work regarding the previous empirical evidence resides in the fact that we have taken into account the means through which these organizations diffuse voluntary information. In this article, we have proposed a model of information disclosure for the Web sites of Spanish nongovernmental organizations for development (NGODs) that can serve as a guide for improving their informative transparency and their accountability. The empirical evidence obtained reveals that Spanish NGOD Web sites are primarily ornamental…

Palaeontological Virtual Congress: A new way to make science

2019

On the first month of 2018, one of the authors (VDC) of this preface had an interesting idea: to hold a virtual congress. At first, he did not know of the existence of this kind of congress, but a quick internet search showed him that there were some examples in the fields of medicine and veterinary medicine; however, it had never been done in palaeontology. For that reason, with the help of other co-workers from the Universitat de València, Museo Paleontológico de Alpuente and Museu Valencià d’Historia Natural, we decided to undertake this adventure. Rekrutteringen til de utøvende musikkutdanningene i Norge

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Norsk tidsskrift for musikkforskning. Also freely available on the Internet: http://journal.uia.no/index.php/NTM/article/view/65 The admission to the music performance programs in Norway is not coordinated. There are good reasons for that, but it also presents some challenges. An example of these is that there are no surveys at the national level of the changes over time in the number of applicants to the classical and popular music performance programs. The article contributes to new knowledge and insight in this area in that it explains and discusses the findings of three empirical studies in the 2000s, studies that provide the basis for ans…
