Strengthening of Masonry Columns with BFRCM or with Steel Wires: An Experimental Study
2016
Nowadays, innovative materials are more frequently adopted for strengthening historical constructions and masonry structures. The target of these techniques is to improve the structural efficiency with retrofitting methods while having a reduced aesthetical impact. In particular, the use of basalt fiber together with a cementitious matrix emerges as a new technique. This kind of fiber is obtained by basalt rock without other components, and consequently it could be considered a natural material, compatible with masonry. Another innovative technique for strengthening masonry columns consists of applying steel wires in the correspondence of mortar joints. Both techniques have been recently pr…
X-ray Computed Tomography for Capillary Collapse of Loose Unsaturated Sand
2016
Abstract The collapse of unsaturated soils consists of the reduction in volume upon wetting at constant total stress. Several studies at the macro scale outline the influence of initial void ratio, confining pressure and matric suction on the onset of collapse of standard laboratory specimens. Conversely, few observations at the micro scale are available in the literature, although the influence of the particles arrangement and intergranular bonding has been formerly supposed. The collapse of fine sand derived by a pyroclastic soil of Southern Italy is investigated in this paper at the microscale using the X-ray Computed Tomography. The experimental procedure, formerly tested on similar pyr…
NMR Study of the (Z)-Phenylhydrazones of 5-Alkyl- and 5-Aryl-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles: Support for the Interpretation of Kinetic Results on the Re…
2005
An analysis of the 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR substituent chemical shifts (SCSs) of the title compounds in CDCl3 solution has been carried out by using the SCSs of other classes of compounds (arenes, methyl esters or amides), Hammett substituent constants or kinetic data. The results obtained provide information concerning the ground-state electronic distribution of the compounds examined. The results relevant to the carbon and nitrogen atoms of the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring can be considered of special interest, as the effects of the substit- Introduction For several years our research group has been involved in the use of NMR spectroscopic data (1H, 13C, 15N, and 17O) to obtain information about th…
π-Conjugated diimidazolium salts: rigid structure to obtain organized materials.
2015
Phenylene ethynylene based diimidazolium salts differing in the alkyl chain length borne on the imidazolium ion and anion nature were synthesized. Their properties were studied both in solution and in the solid state. Salts obtained were able to aggregate in organic solvent solution. Aggregate formation was studied by performing concentration dependent measurements using UV-vis, fluorescence and Resonance Light Scattering. Furthermore, features of the aggregates were also investigated in the solid state by means of fluorescence and Scanning Electron Microscopy measurements. Finally, Density Functional Theory calculations were performed to obtain insights into the interaction geometry in the…
Microscopic and nanoscopic EVA composite investigation: Electrical properties and effect of purification treatment
2004
This work presents preliminary results of an investigation aiming at characterization of nanocomposite insulating materials. Focus is made on size and technological process effects, i.e. dependence of electrical properties on filler size, on polymer-nanofiller interaction (e.g. intercalation or exfoliation) and, in particular, on chemical purification procedures. The materials under investigation are (EVA) copolymer filled by layered micro and nanosized silicates consisting of montmorillonite and fluorohectorite, that is, natural and synthetic clays. Microstructural characterization, using transmission electron microscopy, TEM, and wide-angle X-ray spectroscopy, WAXS, and electrical measure…
Multicriteria decision making taxonomy of code recommendation system challenges: a fuzzy-AHP analysis
2022
AbstractThe recommendation systems plays an important role in today’s life as it assist in reliable selection of common utilities. The code recommendation system is being used by the code databases (GitHub, source frog etc.) aiming to recommend the more appropriate code to the users. There are several factors that could negatively impact the performance of code recommendation systems (CRS). This study aims to empirically explore the challenges that could have critical impact on the performance of the CRS. Using systematic literature review and questionnaire survey approaches, 19 challenges were identified. Secondly, the investigated challenges were further prioritized using fuzzy-AHP analys…
Follow-up in transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy: Useful investigations
2020
Patients with transthyretin amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) and asymptomatic mutation-carriers have to be regularly followed-up in order to identify disease progression and the time point for starting or modifying therapy. In this case series we describe the potential suitability of different variables as progression markers. We retrospectively analyzed the follow-up charts of 10 TTR-FAP patients. Clinical examination included the Neuropathy Impairment Score of Lower Limb (NIS-LL), temperature perception thresholds, nerve conduction and autonomic function tests. The NIS-LL had the greatest value for a sensitive and correct follow-up for all TTR-FAP stages. All other examinations provided u…
Global investments in pandemic preparedness and COVID-19: development assistance and domestic spending on health between 1990 and 2026
2023
Background The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic; characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic; and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected ne…

Transient stability simulation of a fixed speed wind turbine by Matlab/Simulink
2007
This paper describes the dynamic behavior of a typical fixed speed wind turbine connected to the grid; the model is developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink and created as a modular structure. The pitch control system is used for stabilization of the wind turbine at grid faults. In this way, voltage stability of the system with grid-connected wind turbines can be improved by using blade-angle control for a temporary reduction of the wind turbine power during a short-circuit fault in the grid. This paper shows a new variable control for maintaining of voltage stability, when a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the affected line. In th…
