Coordination of Cu2+ Ions to C2 Symmetric Pseudopeptides Derived from Valine

The acid-base and coordination properties of a family of pseudopeptidic ligands with C(2) symmetry derived from valine (4a-e) have been studied using a variety of techniques as a model for metal coordination in peptides and proteins. The Cu(2+) cation has been selected for coordination studies, although, for comparison, some results for Zn(2+) are also presented. Good agreement has been obtained between the results obtained by potentiometric titrations, spectroscopic analysis, and mass spectrometry (ESI) studies. Syntheses and structural study of bile acid amidoalcohols.

Preparation, structural and thermoanalytical characterization of fourteen N-hydroxyalkyl 5beta-cholan-24-amides have been performed in this study. The utilized techniques include liquid state and CP-MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, and also powder and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The results were discussed and compared to each other and also to previous findings on similar compounds. One pure hydrate form was obtained. Six new single crystal structures were determined, including one hydrated chloroform solvate. Ion-Pair Recognition of Tetramethylammonium Salts by Halogenated Resorcinarenes

The non-covalent interactions of different upper-rim-substituted C(2)-resorcinarenes with tetramethylammonium salts were analyzed in the gas phase in an Electrospray Ionization Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance (ESI-FTICR) mass spectrometer and by (1)H NMR titrations. The order of binding strengths of the hosts towards the tetramethylammonium cation in the gas phase reflects the electronic nature of the substituents on the upper rim of the resorcinarene. Characterization of isomeric 1,2,4-oxadiazolyl-N-methylpyridinium salts by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry.

The mass spectrometric behavior of 1,2,4-oxadiazolyl- N-methylpyridinium salts has been investigated. These substances are of current interest as perspective ionic liquids, compounds used as green solvents for synthesis, and for their catalytic properties. The studies have been developed through electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) experiments. The obtained results demonstrate a ready distinction between the two isomeric classes, 3- N-methylpyridinium- and 5- N-methylpyridinium-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, is possible through ESI-MS/MS experiments. A deeper investigation on the principal fragmentation pathways of characteristic ions has been also developed.

The redox state of the cell regulates the ligand binding affinity of human neuroglobin and cytoglobin.

Neuroglobin and cytoglobin reversibly bind oxygen in competition with the distal histidine, and the observed oxygen affinity therefore depends on the properties of both ligands. In the absence of an external ligand, the iron atom of these globins is hexacoordinated. There are three cysteine residues in human neuroglobin; those at positions CD7 and D5 are sufficiently close to form an internal disulfide bond. Both cysteine residues in cytoglobin, although localized in other positions than in human neuroglobin, may form a disulfide bond as well. Molecules with New Topologies Derived from Hydrogen-Bonded Dimers of Tetraurea Calix[4]arenes

Tetraurea calix[4]arenes 2 have been synthesized in which two adjacent aryl urea residues are connected to a loop by an aliphatic chain -O-(CH(2))(n)-O-. The remaining urea residues have a bulky 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl residue and an omega-alkenyloxyphenyl residue. Since this bulky residue cannot pass through the loop, only one homodimer (22) is formed in apolar solvents, for steric reasons, in which the two alkenyl residues penetrate the two macrocyclic loops. Mass spectrometric studies on small open-chain piperazine-containing ligands and their transition metal complexes

Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was used to characterize the complexes formed between open-chain piperazine-containing ligands and transition metal salts (Cobalt, Copper, Zinc, and Cadmium as chlorides, nitrates, and acetates). Only single-charged complexes were observed, formed of one ligand (L) and mainly one metal ion (M). Since the net charge of the complexes was one, a counterion (X) was attached to some of the complexes, with formation of [L + M + X]+ complexes, and a proton was lost from others, as in [L − H + M]+ complexes. Chelate Cooperativity and Spacer Length Effects on the Assembly Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Divalent Pseudorotaxanes

Homo- and heterodivalent crown-ammonium pseudorotaxanes with different spacers connecting the two axle ammonium binding sites have been synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry. The homodivalent pseudorotaxanes are investigated with respect to the thermodynamics of divalent binding and to chelate cooperativity. The shortest spacer exhibits a chelate cooperativity much stronger than that of the longer spacers. On the basis of crystal structure, this can be explained by a noninnocent spacer, which contributes to the binding strength in addition to the two binding sites. A Tetracopper(II)-Tetraradical Cuboidal Core and Its Reactivity as a Functional Model of Phenoxazinone Synthase

The coordination chemistry of the tridentate ligand N-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-2-aminobenzylalcohol H3L has been studied with the copper(II) ion. The ligand is noninnocent in the sense that it is readily oxidized in the presence of air to its o-iminobenzosemiquinonato [L*]2- radical form. The crystal structure of the synthesized tetracopper(II)-tetraradical complex [CuII4(L*)4] (1), has been determined by X-ray crystallography at 100 K. Reactivity of Neutral Mo(S2C6H4)3 in Aqueous Media: an Alternative Functional Model of Sulfite Oxidase.

The kinetics of the reaction of neutral [Mo(S2C6H4)3] with hydrogen sulfite to produce the anionic Mo(V) complex, [Mo(S2C6H4)3]-, and sulfate have been investigated. It has been shown that [Mo(S2C6H4)3] acts as the electron-proton sink in the oxygenation reaction of HSO3(-) by water. Reaction rates, monitored by UV/vis stopped-flow spectrometry, were studied in THF/water media as a function of the concentration of HSO3(-) and molybdenum complex, pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The reaction exhibits pH-dependent HSO3(-) saturation kinetics, and it is first-order in complex concentration.
