Interactive Uses of Journalism: Crossing Between Technological Potential and Young People’s News-Using Practices

2004

The article examines the interactive uses of journalism, focusing on the changes brought by new communication technology in the everyday news media uses of young Finns. The study is based on a survey and in-depth interviews. The results indicate that even though young Finns have easy access to new communication technology, journalism is still predominantly used via television and printed newspapers. While nearly all subjects followed news regularly, a fifth of the respondents had taken advantage of participatory activities offered by the news media. Consequently, technology alone does not seem to alter news practices. The interactive usage of journalism thus seems to be individualized ente…

Measuring populism across nations: testing for measurement invariance of an inventory of populist attitudes

2019

Abstract The rising voter support for populist parties in Western Democracies in recent years has incited academic interest in populist voters and attitudes connected to the voting propensity of populist actors. In line of this research, numerous scales to measure populist attitudes among voters have been proposed. In most cases, however, the measurement of populist attitudes was tailored to specific countries and its applicability to cross-national research on populism was not assessed. This article uses a cross-national survey to assess the measurement invariance, reliability, and validity of a deductively developed inventory for populist attitudes. The findings suggest that there is a co…

Measuring Populist Attitudes on Three Dimensions

2018

Theoretically, populism has been conceptualized as a political ideology with three sub-dimensions: anti-elitism attitudes, a preference for popular sovereignty, and a belief in the homogeneity and virtuousness of the people. However, empirical research to date has treated populist attitudes as a unidimensional construct. To address this issue, we propose to conceptualize populist attitudes as a latent higher-order construct with three distinct first-order dimensions. A 12-item inventory was developed using two survey studies conducted in Switzerland in 2014 and 2015. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to test the construct validity of this measure of populist attitudes. …

Environmental journalism as area of specialization in university classrooms

2014

Report environment issues has bec…

'A Shared Reality between a Journalist and the Audience': How Live Journalism Reimagines News Stories

2021

Live journalism is a new journalistic genre in which journalists present news stories to a live audience. This article investigates the journalistic manuscripts of live journalism performances. With the focus on texts, the article reaches beyond the live performance to explore the wider implications and potentials pioneered by live journalists. The data were gathered from Musta laatikko (‘Black Box’) manuscripts, a live journalism production by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The manuscripts were analysed as eudaimonic journalism through four conceptual dimensions: self-transcendence, autonomy, competence, and relatedne…

PPGIS applied to environmental communication and hazards for a community-based approach: a dualism in the Southern Italy "calanchi" landscape

2021

<abstract>
The need of protection of the territory is a priority for the society, which is an integral part of it (unfortunately, this coincidence is often forgotten): the new environmental issues require the development of innovative management strategies and of appropriate knowledge and models. The balanced use of resources, essential for the survival and well-being of society, can be optimised through the promotion of the territory. The identification and the sustainable development of local resources can only be achieved by directing development policies towards a path of integration between ecological needs, protection of the landscape and socio-economic and cultural nee…

Design e narrazioni

2022

The text arises from the need to focus on the cognitive methodological and design implications of the concept of storytelling increasingly recurrent in our daily experience especially for the many forms of communication and cultural productions that are inspired by itSettore ICAR/13 - Disegno Industrialeit is a concept that also in theoretical reflection and design planning is feeding strongly innovative and evolutionary dimensions in the construction communication of meanings intangible content experiences and emotional values that overlap and intertwine with the tangible and functional expression of objects communicative artifacts spaces.. It proposes a cognitive path tangent to the development of "narratology" and the theories of narrationthus we come across a multiplicity of disciplinary connections affecting sociology psychology anthropology philosophy semiotics and of course history cinema journalism advertising up to corporate communication and political propaganda. It is an articulated panorama that today seems to expand more and more and far from being mainly addressed to theoretical issues increasingly seems to be modeled on application performative and design aspects.
