Arendt, Eichmann and the Politics of the Past
2021
Part of the Pro et Contra series. Arendt, Eichmann and the Politics of the Past offers a critical analysis of the original American debate over Hannah Arendt’s report of the trial of Adolf Eichmann. First published in 2008, Tuija Parvikko’s book discusses both the campaign against Arendt organised by American Zionist organisations and the controversy Arendt’s report caused within American Jewish intellectual circles. Parvikko’s analysis carefully draws from the historical background of the report, discussing Arendt’s early studies of Zionism and her critique of the Jewish state. The volume also gives an account of Eichmann’s capture in Argentina and the reception of the report among legal s…

Repetition and Aesthetic Judgment in Post-tonal Music for Large Ensemble and Orchestra
2021
Post-tonal music often poses perceptual and cognitive challenges for listeners, potentially related to the use of relatively uncommon and unfamiliar musical material and compositional processes. As a basic compositional device, repetition affects memory for music and is structured by composers in very different ways across tonal and post-tonal musical repertoires. Of particular concern is whether post-tonal music exhibits mnemonic affordances that allow listeners to experience a sense of global coherence, and whether repetition correlates strongly with aesthetic judgment. Although previous research suggests that repetition impacts aesthetic preference, empirical research has not mapped out …
Scaffolding self-regulated learning from causal-relations texts: Diagramming and self-assessment to improve metacomprehension accuracy?
2023
AbstractThe accuracy of students’ relative comprehension judgments when reading texts is typically rather low. This has been ascribed to students grounding their comprehension judgments on cues that are not diagnostic of their actual comprehension level. Asking students to complete causal diagrams—a diagramming scaffold—before judging comprehension has proved effective in providing them with more diagnostic cues and thereby fostered metacomprehension accuracy and self-regulated learning. However, there is still room for improvement. We investigated experimentally whether adding the instruction to students to self-assess their causal diagrams: (1) would lead to more accurate judgments than c…
Come e quando le norme internazionali operano negli ordinamenti statali
2023
In this chapter the main issues concerning legal effects of international legal rules in domestic orders are examined in a systematic way. This investigation is underpinned by the following five pillars. First, the idea that States are not bound by international obligations in this respect. Second, that despite the persistent (albeit limited) importance of formal models of incorporation of international law into domestic law, a central role is played by domestic courts, with particular regard to the identification of self-"executing" rules. Third, that international legal rules may sometimes produce legal effects in domestic orders, even in the absence of a formal incorporation into domesti…
REPLACER L'AUDITEUR AU COEUR DE SON METIER: UNE ETUDE EXPLORATOIRE SUR LE MARCHE FRANÇAIS
2012
The auditor's judgment, faces new stakes bound up to the industrialization of the audit process and to the development of the new information and communication technologies. These evolutions, complicate the audit practices and calling into question to the professional judgment exercise. The aim of our research is to contribute, to restore and to re-size the place granted to the professional judgment. To be made we led two studies: a qualitative study realized with a sample consisted of 22 auditors and a documentary study based on the booklet of The Green Paper on Audit Policy. The results show that there is a dialectical relation between the technical dimension and the human dimension of th…

2019
Need for closure moderates the break in the message effect
2016
Abstract Cutting the message into smaller portions is a common practice in the media. Typically such messages consist of a headline followed by a story elaboration. In a series of studies Dolinski and Kofta (2001) have shown that such a break in the message increases the effect of the information provided in the headline over that of a story which actually contained information inconsistent with that headline. A possible explanation of this effect, based on the concept of the need for cognitive closure, is presented in the article. The experiment shows the break-in-the-message effect is found mainly for participants with high need for closure but not for those with low such need.
Psicologia del giudizio normativo: una ipotesi
2022
In this chapter, I develop an hypothesis about the psychology of normativity. Normativity, I suggest, emerges through the structuring of multiple layers of intra-personal and inter-personal cognitive control.
