Properties of native ultrathin aluminium oxide tunnel barriers

We have investigated planar metal–insulator–metal tunnel junctions with aluminium oxide as the dielectricum. These oxide barriers were grown on an aluminium electrode in pure oxygen at room temperature till saturation. By applying the Simmons model we derived discrete widths of the tunnelling barrier, separated by Δs ≈ 0.38 nm. This corresponds to the addition of single layers of oxygen atoms. The minimum thickness of s0 ≈ 0.54 nm is then due to a double layer of oxygen. We found a strong and systematic dependence of the barrier height on the barrier thickness. Influence of the electro-optical properties of an a-Si:H single layer on the performances of a pin solar cell

We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Abstract Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder, in which recurrent abdominal pain is associated with defecation or a change in bowel habits. STW 5-II is a combination of six medicinal herbs with a clinically proven efficacy in managing IBS. The "Historia de la doncella Teodor" in Burgos’ Printing Press: Regarding a New Edition from Juan de Junta’s Workshop, c. 1535-1540

En este trabajo se da noticia y se lleva a cabo el estudio tipobibliográfico de una edición sine notis de la Historia de la doncella Teodor. El análisis permite identificar la impresión en Burgos en el taller de Juan de Junta, c. 1535-1540. El rasgo material que singulariza este impreso es que la última hoja del primer cuaderno ha sido remedada por una copia manuscrita que no solo reproduce la tipografía original, sino también, a plumilla, las estampas. El estudio textual e iconográfico nos permitirá identificar la fuente del folio contrahecho.

Physical origin of Na+/Cl− selectivity of tight junctions between epithelial cells. Nonlocal electrostatic approach

Abstract Tight junctions (TJs) of epithelial cells play a key role in regulation of the ion exchange between NaCl solutions separated by the layer of these cells. Their functioning is based on a strong difference in the permeabilities of these channels for Na+ and Cl− ion migrational fluxes owing to specific properties of the protein network inside TJs. It has been assumed in this study that this phenomenon originates from combination of two effects related to this specific TJ protein (claudin) which segments are partially located inside the TJ space. Involvement of purinergic nerves in the NANC inhibitory junction potentials in pigeon oesophageal smooth muscle.

Electrical field stimulation (EFS) (0.5 ms in train of 2-32 Hz for 300 ms) in smooth muscle of pigeon oesophagus, in the presence of atropine (1 microm) and guanethidine (1 microm), elicited an inhibitory response consisting of a transient hyperpolarization (inhibitory junction potential, IJP) associated with muscle relaxation. 2. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 100 microm) induced hyperpolarization correlated to mechanical relaxation. 3. Muscarine receptor types mediating autoinhibition of acetylcholine release and sphincter contraction in the guinea-pig iris.

The potencies of several muscarine receptor antagonists in blocking either the autoinhibition of acetylcholine release or the muscarinic contraction of the sphincter muscle upon acetylcholine release were investigated in the guinea-pig iris. The agonist at pre- or postjunctional muscarine receptors was acetylcholine released upon field stimulation (5.5 Hz, 2 min) of the irides preloaded with 14C-choline. The stimulation-evoked 14C-overflow was doubled in the presence of atropine 0.1 mumol/l but unaffected by the agonist (+/-)-methacholine (50 mumol/l).
