The promise of spintronics for unconventional computing

Novel computational paradigms may provide the blueprint to help solving the time and energy limitations that we face with our modern computers, and provide solutions to complex problems more efficiently (with reduced time, power consumption and/or less device footprint) than is currently possible with standard approaches. Structural and functional features of human muscle-tendon unit.

This paper reviews the architectural details and the in vivo behavior of the human muscle-tendon unit with the focus on the triceps surae and quadriceps femoris muscles. Recent advances in experimental techniques allow in vivo measurements of muscle-tendon architecture and function. In particular, the use of ultrasonography for measurement of tendon and muscle has expanded our knowledge in the last decade. Furthermore, the nuclear magnetic resonance imaging is opening up new insights not only for three-dimensional anatomical information but also for examining musculo-skeletal motion in vivo. Direct observation of second-order atom tunnelling

Tunnelling of material particles through a classically impenetrable barrier constitutes one of the hallmark effects of quantum physics. When interactions between the particles compete with their mobility through a tunnel junction, intriguing novel dynamical behaviour can arise where particles do not tunnel independently. In single-electron or Bloch transistors, for example, the tunnelling of an electron or Cooper pair can be enabled or suppressed by the presence of a second charge carrier due to Coulomb blockade. Phase sticking in one-dimensional Josephson junction chains

Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.88.104501 We studied current-voltage characteristics of long one-dimensional Josephson junction chains with Josephson energy much larger than charging energy, EJ EC. In this regime, typical I-V curves of the samples consist of a supercurrent-like branch at low-bias voltages followed by a voltage-independent chain current branch, Ichain at high bias. Coulomb blockade nanothermometer

Reliable thermometry is normally based on commercial secondary sensors which are factory calibrated. Primary thermometers exist, too, but their use is limited because of intrinsic slowness, complex instrumentation, or inconvenient installation at the desired location. We have found that arrays of nanoscale tunnel junctions exhibit properties which are very suitable for primary and secondary cryogenic thermometry. Temperature range of this Coulomb blockade thermometer (CBT) extends over about two decades for one sensor and the mean temperature is lithographically adjustable. Behaviour of Nb2O5/PPy contacts: From Schottky barriers to p-n junctions

In this work, a study of the photoelectrochemical responses of Nb O /PPy contacts fabricated in both organic 2 5 and aqueous solutions is performed. From the comparison between the experimental data of PPy photodeposited on Nb O in organic and in aqueous solutions, it is evident that the medium used for the photodeposition 2 5 influences the absorption coefficient, the band gap and flat band potential values.

Ultrastructure of preimplantation genetic diagnosis-derived human blastocysts grown in a coculture system after vitrification

Objective To evaluate ultrastructural features of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) blastocysts before and after vitrification. Design Descriptive study of both vitrified and fresh hatching blastocysts. Setting PGD program at the Instituto Universitario, Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad. Patient(s) Patients undergoing PGD donated their abnormal embryos for research (n = 26). Intervention(s) Biopsied embryos were cultured in the presence of human endometrial cells until day 6. Sixteen blastocysts were vitrified. A total of 11 high-scored hatching blastocysts, 6 warmed and 5 fresh, were fixed for ultrastructure. Le Livre Rouge apporte des éléments nouveaux sur le rapport de Jung à l’art pictural. L’étude se propose de replacer et d’étudier les images du Livre Rouge dans le contexte des discours sur l’art de l’époque. Pour ce faire, on s’intéressera dans un premier temps à la réception par Jung du discours sur « Abstraction et Einfühlung » de Worringer dans les Types psychologiques et à l’expérience de la « tentation » esthétique, faite par Jung dans Le Livre Rouge. Phytochemical Analysis and Cytotoxicity Towards Multidrug-Resistant Leukemia Cells of Essential Oils Derived from Lebanese Medicinal Plants

Juniperus excelsa fruit essential oil as well as J. oxycedrus, Cedrus libani, and Pinus pinea wood essential oils have been obtained with yields between 2.2 ± 0.3 % to 3.4 ± 0.5 % and analyzed by gas chromatography. Sesquiterpenes mainly characterized C. libani and J. oxycedrus essential oils, while in P. pinea and J. excelsa, monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds. In J. oxycedrus, cis-calamenene (7.8 %), cuparene (3.8 %), and cis-thujopsenal (2.0 %) have been detected for the first time.
