Phylogeny and prevalence of kobuviruses in dogs and cats in the UK
2013
AbstractThe kobuviruses represent an emerging genus in the Picornaviridae. Here we have used next generation sequencing and conventional approaches to identify the first canine kobuvirus (CaKoV) from outside the USA. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that a single lineage genotype of CaKoV now exists in Europe and the USA with 94% nucleotide similarity in the coding region. CaKoV was only identified in a single case from a case–control study of canine diarrhoea, suggesting this virus was not a frequent cause of disease in this population. Attempts to grow CaKoV in cell culture failed. Sequence analysis suggested CaKoV was distinct from human Aichi virus (AiV), and unlikely to pose a significan…
The relationship between adipokines and the onset of type 2 diabetes in middle-aged men: The PRIME study
2016
Abstract Aims Epidemiological evidence suggests that adipokines may be associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes, but the evidence to date is limited and inconclusive. This study examined the association between adiponectin and leptin and the subsequent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in a UK population based cohort of non-diabetic middle-aged men. Methods Baseline serum levels of leptin and adiponectin were measured in 1839 non-diabetic men aged 50–60 years who were participating in the prospective population-based PRIME study. Over a mean follow-up of 14.7 years, new cases of type 2 diabetes were determined from self-reported clinical information with subsequent validation by general prac…

Inspired by Friends: Adolescents' Network Homophily Moderates the Relationship between Social Comparison, Envy, and Inspiration on Instagram
2019
© Copyright 2019, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Research on the negative psycho-emotional implications of social comparisons on social network sites such as Instagram has rapidly accumulated in recent years. However, little research has considered the extent to which such comparisons can elicit positive motivational outcomes for adolescent users, specifically inspiration. Furthermore, little is known about whether it matters whom young people compare themselves to on Instagram (i.e., network composition) and how this may modulate the emotional outcomes of Instagram social comparisons. The present study thus sought to determine how adolescents' Instagram comparisons of ability associate with inspir…

2017
BACKGROUND: This study compares handgrip strength and its association with mortality across studies conducted in Moscow, Denmark, and England.MATERIALS: The data collected by the Study of Stress, Aging, and Health in Russia, the Study of Middle-Aged Danish Twins and the Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins, and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing was utilized.RESULTS: Among the male participants, the age-standardized grip strength was 2 kg and 1 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. The age-standardized grip strength among the female participants was 1.9 kg and 1.6 kg lower in Russia than in Denmark and in England, respectively. In Moscow, a one-kilogram …
Intraocular Pressure Telemetry for Managing Glaucoma during the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
Purpose To evaluate in glaucoma patients the feasibility and use of remote monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) with an implanted telemetry sensor during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown. Design Cross-sectional study. Participants Patients previously implanted with a telemetric IOP sensor (Eyemate; Implandata GmbH) were included. Methods Intraocular pressure measurements acquired by the patients during the lockdown were collected by physicians who were located remotely. A questionnaire was sent to 10 participating study centers to evaluate the clinical impact of remote monitoring of IOP via the IOP sensor system. Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and birthweight: Insights from a pooled analysis of case–control data from Germany, the United Kingdom and th…
2012
Abstract Background Heavy birthweight is one of the few established risk factors for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). To provide new insight into this relationship, particularly at the extremes ( 4500 g), we pooled data from three of the largest childhood cancer case–control studies ever conducted. Methods Birthweight and gestational age on 4075 children with ALL and 12,065 controls were collected during the course of three studies conducted in the USA, the UK and Germany in the 1990s. Information was obtained from mothers at interview, and the impact of bias was evaluated using the UK study which accessed birth registrations of participants and non-participants. Odds ratios (…
Predicting intention to participate in self-management behaviors in patients with Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A cross-national study.
2019
Rationale. Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition that predisposes patients to substantially increased risk of early-onset atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. FH risks can be minimized through regular participation in three self-management. Behaviors. physical activity, healthy eating, and taking cholesterol lowering medication. Objective. The present study tested the effectiveness of an integrated social cognition model in predicting intention to participate in the self-management behaviors in FH patients from seven countries. Method. Consecutive patients in FH clinics from Australia, Hong Kong, Brazil, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, and UK (total N = 726) completed measur…
