Postnatal neurogenesis in the medial cortex of the tropical lizard Tropidurus hispidus.

2004

Young, adult and presumed old specimens of the tropical lizard Tropidurus hispidus, living in an almost steady warm habitat, have been the subjects of a 5-bromodeoxiuridine immunocytochemical study to label proliferating brain cells. All animals showed abundant 5-bromodeoxiuridine-labeled nuclei in the ependyma of their telencephalic lateral ventricles, with these being especially abundant in the medial cortex ependyma. Surprisingly, adult animals displayed higher numbers of labeled nuclei when compared with those of young specimens. In a second experiment, in order to check the evolution of ependymal-labeled nuclei, adult specimens were allowed 4 h or 2, 4, 7, 15 or 30 days of survival aft…

Long-spined polymorphic neurons of the medial cortex of lizards: a Golgi, Timm, and electron-microscopic study.

1988

The morphology, ultrastructure, and principal synaptic input of longspined neurons located in the inner plexiform layer of the medial cortex in three related species of lizards is described. Golgi impregnations have been used to define the external morphology of these neurons and their axonal trajectories. Their most striking characteristic is the presence of very long spines or “microdendrites” especially abundant on the distal dendritic segments. Axons have ascendent trajectories, pass through the cell layer, and ramify in the outer plexiform layer. Combined Golgi-electron microscopy as well as standard electron microscopy permitted the definition of the ultrastructure of these neurons. T…

Ontogeny of somatostatin immunoreactive neurons in the medial cerebral cortex and other cortical areas of the lizardPodarcis hispanica

1996

The ontogeny of somatostatin immunoreactive interneurons in the cerebral cortex of the lizard Podarcis hispanica has been studied in histological series of embryos, perinatal specimens, and adults. Somatostatin immunoreactive interneurons appear in the early stages of lizard cerebral cortex ontogeny, their number increases during embryonary development, reaches a peak in early postnatal life, and decreases in adult lizards. The first somatostatin immunoreactive somata in the lizard forebrain appeared on E36, and they were located in non cortical areas. Then, on E39 and later, somatostatin immunoreactive neurons were seen in the lizard cortex in a rostral-to-caudal spatial gradient, which pa…

Structural and Chemical Characterization of Cerium Oxide Thin Layers Grown on Silicon Substrate

2015

In this study, we report transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy study of cerium oxide thin layers deposited on silicon substrate. Transmission electron microscopy experiments have revealed the flat morphology of the deposited layers. In addition, studies of high resolution images have indicated the presence of mainly ceria crystallized nanoparticles. Energy electron loss spectroscopy measurements were also performed in scanning mode to study the evolution of the cerium valence. In addition to Ce4+ inside the layer, the presence of amorphous cerium silicate with valence +3 is pointed out at the vicinity of the substrate.

Junceosides A-C, new triterpene saponins from Arenaria juncea.

2002

Three novel triterpenoid saponins, junceosides A (1), B (2), and C (3), together with two known saponins have been isolated from the roots of Arenaria juncea. Their structures were elucidated using a combination of homo- and heteronuclear 2D NMR techniques (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC) and by FABMS. The new compounds were characterized as 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosylgypsogenin-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1-->3)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D-fucopyranoside (1), 3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosylgypsogenin-28-O-beta-D-x…

Low temperature plasma treatment of monomolecular Langmuir-Blodgett films

1993

Abstract The structure of the surface layer of materials is usually quite different from the bulk. Detailed information about the surface structure is often not available. This, together with the complex nature of low temperature plasma treatment, hinders the investigations of plasma chemical processes on solid surfaces. Monomolecular Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) structures offer a unique opportunity to prepare model surfaces with known thickness and molecular architecture. From the data obtained, the depth of the Ar plasma influence on solid organic surfaces was estimated to be about 400–1000 A depending on the nature of the surface layer. An oxygen plasma penetrates deeper with a penetration li…

Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

2013

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

Nonlinear hairy layer theory of electrophoretic fingerprinting applied to consecutive layer by layer polyelectrolyte adsorption onto charged polystyr…

1997

The consecutive layer-by-layer adsorption of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) on colloidal charged latex particles is investigated by measuring the electrophoretic mobility as a function of pH and ionic strength over a broad range (electrophoretic fingerprinting). Meaningful interpretation of the data required the development of a nonlinear approach to hairy particle electrophoresis including dissociation, adsorption, and association. Steric and electrostatic exclusion of mobile ions from the hairy layer has been considered. Also, the surface conductivity correction is extended to the case of charged hairy layer particles. We deposited up to three polyel…

How diffusivity, thermocline and incident light intensity modulate the dynamics of Deep Chlorophyll Maximum in Tyrrhenian Sea

2015

During the last few years theoretical works have shed new light and proposed new hypotheses on the mechanisms which regulate the spatio-temporal behaviour of phytoplankton communities in marine pelagic ecosystems. Despite this, relevant physical and biological issues, such as effects of the time- dependent mixing in the upper layer, competition between groups, and dynamics of non-stationary deep chlorophyll maxima, are still open questions. In this work, we analyze the spatio-temporal behaviour of five phytoplankton populations in a real marine ecosystem by using a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion-taxis model. The study is performed, taking into account the seasonal variations of environm…
