Influence of gamma-irradiation on thermally-induced mesoscopic gelation of degalactosylated xyloglucans

Thermoresponsive degalactosylated xyloglucans have been already proposed as in situ gelling scaffolds for tissue engineering, due to their reversible macroscopic thermal gelation at body temperature and biodegradability. The highly branched, hydroxyl group-rich molecular structure renders xyloglucans interesting raw materials also in the form of micro/nanoparticles for application as nanoscalar drug delivery devices in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. A friction factor analysis of the coupling between polymer/solvent self- and mutual-diffusion: polystyrene/toluene

The Bearman statistical mechanical theory, which couples the mutual-diffusion and self-diffusion coefficients via friction factors, has been applied to polystyrene/toluene solutions with polystyrene molecular weights of 18 kDa and 900 kDa. Toluene and polystyrene self-diffusion coefficients, obtained from the literature and measured here, along with polystyrene/toluene binary mutual-diffusion coefficients and thermodynamic data, were employed to independently calculate the three friction coefficients (ξ 12 , ξ 11 , and ξ 22 ) required to describe transport within binary solutions. The production of resveratrol (3,5,4'‐trihydroxystilbene) by grapevinein vitrocultures, and its application to screening for grey mould resistance

The ability of grapevine in vitro cultures to synthesise the phytoalexin precursor resveratrol in response to ultraviolet light irradiations is investigated in order to develop methods for screening for resistance to grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) in grapevines produced as a result of somatic embryogenesis. It is demonstrated that resveratrol formation can be reproducibly induced in leaves of in vitro plantlets. Differences in the production of resveratrol among the three varieties of Vitis vinifera tested (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon) were consistent with observations regarding their field susceptibility to grey mould. Influence of polysaccharides on wine protein aggregation.

Abstract Polysaccharides are the major high-molecular weight components of wines. In contrast, proteins occur only in small amounts in wine, but contribute to haze formation. The detailed mechanism of aggregation of these proteins, especially in combination with other wine components, remains unclear. This study demonstrates the different aggregation behavior between a buffer and a model wine system by dynamic light scattering. Arabinogalactan-protein, for example, shows an increased aggregation in the model wine system, while in the buffer system a reducing effect is observed. The Effect of Light on the Growth of Pea Plants and the Subsequent Influence in Shikimate Oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.25) Activity

Summary Pea plants were cultured in white light, red and far red light, and in the dark during a period of three weeks. At several states of development we investigated the activity of the enzyme shikimate oxidoreductase, the amount of fresh and dry matter, and the contents of protein in stem, leaves, cotyledons, and roots. The enzyme activity was found to be distributed organ-specifically and uninfluenced by the phytochrome system, but it was significantly depressed in plants grown in the dark compared to plants grown in white light. Single Particle Motion of Hard-Sphere-Like Polymer Micronetwork Colloids Up to the Colloid Glass Transition

Polymer micronetwork spheres swollen in a good solvent can be regarded as colloids which require no special stabilisation to avoid aggregation. Their interactions can be timed by changing the degree of internal crosslinking. The phase behaviour and the static structure factor demonstrate that crosslink density of 1:10 (inverse number of monomer units between crosslinks) is sufficient to achieve hard sphere behaviour. Telechelic α,ω-macrozwitterions — narrowly distributed polystyrene chains oppositely charged at each end — were synthesized via anionic polymerization using direct functionalization with the initiator and the termination agent. The resulting products were purified (zwitterion content ≥ 0,95) and characterized with gel permeation chromatography, viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering. In unpolar solvents as toluene, the polymeric zwitterions form clusters with molecular weights depending on concentration. Photoactive Hybrid Materials based on Conjugated Porous Polymers and Inorganic Nanoparticles

This review explores the current state‐of‐the‐art for functional photoactive hybrids containing inorganic nanoparticles (magnetic and metal) and conjugated organic porous polymers (CPPs). Albeit new in the field, with the first hybrid material of this kind reported in 2012, those materials have gained increasing interest in applications such as sensing, heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis, and lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs).
