Output Impedance Improvement Using Coupled Inductors

2017

When using a single DC/DC converter with multiple outputs and having a buck topology, which has one filter inductor per output, the designer can choose to couple these outputs together. This paper demonstrates additional benefits of coupling output inductors together. Apart from saving mass and volume, and due to an improved small signal behaviour it also reduces the output impedance of the regulated output. The paper will analyse a seven output push-pull converter used as a space power converter module and verify the theoretical results with experimental measurements.

The difference of free light chains as a predictor of kidney damage in patients with Multiple Myeloma

2022

Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant neoplasm characterized by the clonal expansion of plasma cells that can release monoclonal immunoglobulins (monoclonal component) or part of theme. Since 2001, the k and λ serum free light chains (sFLC) evaluation and their ratio (rFLC) have made up the laboratory analysis more sensitive and precise in MM patients. The role of rFLC has been widely studied and discussed and now it is validated in the literature. Instead, the value of free light chains difference (dFLC), especially in MM is less known yet. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the dFLC and the kidney damage parameters in patients with MM, in compa…

Physicochemical Properties of A New PEGylated Polybenzofulvene Brush for Drug Encapsulation

2019

A new polymer brush was synthesized by spontaneous polymerization of benzofulvene macromonomer 6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k bearing a nona(ethylene glycol) side chain linked to the 3-phenylindene scaffold by means of a triazole heterocycle. The polymer structure was studied by SEC-MALS, NMR spectroscopy, and MALDI-TOF MS techniques, and the results supported the role of oligomeric initiatory species in the spontaneous polymerization of polybenzofulvene derivatives. The aggregation features of high molecular weight poly-6-MOEG-9-T-BF3k-FE were investigated by pyrene fluorescence analysis, dynamic light scattering studies, and transmission electron microscopy, which suggested a tendency towards the format…

“SmartGlass” Obstacles for Dynamic Inducing of Light Scattering in Vision Research Experiments

2017

We describe a technique that allows control of visual stimuli quality through the use of a setup with a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film positioned in the optical pathway of one or both human eyes. Nowadays, PDLC films allow alteration of the resolution and contrast limits of the transmitted light due to continuous change in the light scattering that is obtained by the application of an AC electrical field. In our experimental setup, the use of a wide-aperture up to area of 20 x 15 cm2 PDLC sheet is combined with a flat-screen PC display or with a modified display emission block without its interference filter unit and with an installed individually controllable colored light-em…

On the perception of leaf morphology and visible light by Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acariformes, Tetranychidae)

2022

The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae is one of the most polyphagous and most damaging pests worldwide. The behaviour of the mite differs on its various host plants and this could influence crop defence strategies. We investigated the perception of leaf morphology by T. urticae in relation to the effects of visible light on the selection of sites on which females prefer to live and feed. Mite females chose the shaded surface when smooth and glabrous lemon leaves were offered as a surface for living and feeding, showing a photophobic behaviour. However, they clearly preferred the abaxial surface of bean leaves regardless of the presence or absence of visible light. As no difference…

Effects of canopy covering on yield and quality of ‘Nero d’Avola’ (Vitis vinifera L.) grown in hot-arid climate condition

The impact of climate change on grapevine ecophysiology and vineyard management is predicted to be a serious problem in the next years. In fact, it has an influence on the fruit-set, yield, and in modulating decoupling between technological and phenolic ripening. Thus, it is essential to identify costeffective and easy-to-implement solutions to deal with the issue. For this purpose, the present study aims to test different shade treatments (ST) applied directly to the canopy of ′Nero d’Avola′ cultivar (Vitis vinifera L.), trying to limit the excess of light and heat that, usually occur in hot-arid climate areas as in Sicily. Two ST were imposed during the 2020 vegetative season from fruit s…

Design, Synthesis and Characterization of a Visible-Light-Sensitive Molecular Switch and Its PEGylation Towards a Self-Assembling Molecule.

2022

HBDI-like chromophores represent a novel set of biomimetic switches mimicking the fluorophore of the green fluorescent protein that are currently studied with the hope to expand the molecular switch/motor toolbox. However, until now members capable of absorbing visible light in their neutral (i. e. non-anionic) form have not been reported. In this contribution we report the preparation of an HBDI-like chromophore based on a 3-phenylbenzofulvene scaffold capable of absorbing blue light and photoisomerizing on the picosecond timescale. More specifically, we show that double-bond photoisomerization occurs in both the E-to-Z and Z-to-E directions and that these can be controlled by irradiating …

Fluorescent Biosensors Based on Silicon Nanowires

2021

Nanostructures are arising as novel biosensing platforms promising to surpass current performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and affordability of standard approaches. However, for several nanosensors, the material and synthesis used make the industrial transfer of such technologies complex. Silicon nanowires (NWs) are compatible with Si-based flat architecture fabrication and arise as a hopeful solution to couple their interesting physical properties and surface-to-volume ratio to an easy commercial transfer. Among all the transduction methods, fluorescent probes and sensors emerge as some of the most used approaches thanks to their easy data interpretation, measure affordability…

On the distribution of lightning current among interconnected grounding systems in medium voltage grids

2018

This paper presents the results of a first investigation on the effects of lightning stroke on medium voltage installations' grounding systems, interconnected with the metal shields of the Medium Voltage (MV) distribution grid cables or with bare buried copper ropes. The study enables us to evaluate the distribution of the lightning current among interconnected ground electrodes in order to estimate if the interconnection, usually created to reduce ground potential rise during a single-line-to-ground fault, can give place to dangerous situations far from the installation hit by the lightning stroke. Four different case studies of direct lightning stroke are presented and discussed: (1) two …
