Live imaging of developmental processes in a living meristem of Davidia involucrata (Nyssaceae)

2014

Morphogenesis in plants is usually reconstructed by scanning electron microscopy and histology of meristematic structures. These techniques are destructive and require many samples to obtain a consecutive series of states. Unfortunately, using this methodology the absolute timing of growth and complete relative initiation of organs remain obscure. To overcome this limitation, an in vivo observational method based on Epi-Illumination Light Microscopy (ELM) was developed and tested with a male inflorescence meristem (floral unit) of the handkerchief tree Davidia involucrata Baill. (Nyssaceae). We asked whether the most basal flowers of this floral unit arise in a basipetal sequence or, altern…

Derecho de acceso a la información : el desafío de una sociedad guiada por la transparencia en el ordenamiento jurídico español

2021

This study will address the two aspects of rights linked to information, the right to information and the right to information, to end with the formulation of some conclusions that, distancing themselves from a mere summary, seek to encourage doctrinal and political debate on assumptions that, being peacefully settled, should be reformulated in light of the repeated crisis of transparency. For this, it will be articulated by addressing, first, the most significant aspects of the right to information and its link with the right to freedom of expression, as well as the new challenges that these rights face in the digital age, to then analyze the right to information, its regulation in the Spa…

Deep-Sea Bioluminescence Blooms after Dense Water Formation at the Ocean Surface

2013

The deep ocean is the largest and least known ecosystem on Earth. It hosts numerous pelagic organisms, most of which are able to emit light. Here we present a unique data set consisting of a 2.5-year long record of light emission by deep-sea pelagic organisms, measured from December 2007 to June 2010 at the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope in the deep NW Mediterranean Sea, jointly with synchronous hydrological records. This is the longest continuous time-series of deep-sea bioluminescence ever recorded. Our record reveals several weeks long, seasonal bioluminescence blooms with light intensity up to two orders of magnitude higher than background values, which correlate to changes in th…

Vector FWM in optical fibers: tuning techniques and applications

2022

Passive direct measurement of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum from in vivo leaves

2022

The fluorescence of chlorophyll in vegetation is a weak signal emitted between 650 and 850 nm that is mixed with the much more intense light reflected by the leaf, which is why active methods are commonly used (through the additional contribution of controlled artificial light) or using indirect measurements instead. So, the measurement is provided just in relative units in the first case, or the accuracy of the estimate in the second case is uncertain without proper direct validation. The Thesis presents a new device, called FluoWat, for passive measurement that allows direct measurement of the fluorescence emission of leaves in vivo under natural conditions in the field with sunlight. And…

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

2020

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (eþe− þ p or μþμ− þ p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of ffiffiffi s p ¼ 13 TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb−1. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee þ p (μμ þ p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced f…

Quantum well intermixing in GaInNAs/GaAs structures

2003

We report on the characteristics of quantum well intermixing in GaInNAs/GaAs structures of differing N content. Rapid thermal annealing combined with SiO2 caps deposited on the surface of the samples is used to disorder 1.3 mum GaInNAs/GaAs multiquantum wells which have been preannealed in-situ to the stage of blueshift saturation. The different effects of two capping layer deposition techniques on the interdiffusion of In-Ga have been compared, particular regarding the role of sputtering processes. The dependence of quantum well intermixing-induced photoluminescence blueshift on N concentration has provided extra information on the intrinsic properties of the GaInNAs/GaAs material system. …

Effects of rapid thermal annealing on the optical properties of low-loss 1.3μm GaInNAs∕GaAs saturable Bragg reflectors

2004

We report studies of the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the optical properties of a low-loss 1.3 mum saturable Bragg reflector (SBR), consisting of a GaInNAs/GaAs single quantum well embedded in an AlAs/GaAs Bragg reflector grown monolithically on a GaAs substrate. RTA gives rise to a blueshift of the photoluminescence (PL) peak (and therefore of the excitonic absorption peak) and an enhancement of PL intensity, while the reflectivity properties including peak reflectivity and bandwidth are not degraded. Temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements show that the RTA-induced blueshift of photoluminescence consists of two components: one originating from the increase of op…

Light-induced transmission nonlinearities in gallium selenide

1999

The intensity of a He–Ne laser (633 nm, 5 mW) transmitted by different GaSe samples is observed to change in correlation with a Nd-yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser pulse (532 nm, 7.8 ns, 3 mJ) which excites them. Such time response has been attributed to a nonlinear optical effect, i.e., a decrease in the refractive index due to the exciton screening by the photogenerated carriers. A calculation of the absorption coefficient and refractive index at different carrier concentrations has led to a reconstruction of transmittance transients which fully agree with the experimental data at different incident intensities and temperatures.
