The paper aims to offer an account of some representative opinions of ancient Greeks about the role of the space, conceived in its geographical/environmental value, in which a certain population lives, as well as of the language spoken by a population, in order to build historically the concept of Greek nation (to Hellenikón). The different positions expressed on these matters by Herodotus, Thucydides, Strabon and Pausanias are discussed, and the examination mostly concernes the ethnic and historical-linguistic aspects of the representation of the Dorians and Ionians.

The paper will provide an overview of the semiotics of space as it has been investigated in Italy in the last twenty years. After identifying the semiotic relevance in the study of space, the distinction between objectivating and subjectivating conceptions is recalled, stressing how these two kinds of spatiality are such only by virtue of effects of meaning constructed by and in texts. The essay analyzes the occurrences, in ancient Greek texts, of the nexus λόγῳ (or διὰ λόγου) θεωρητόν, referring to entities that can be object of observation or speculation through the λόγος, as opposed to what is observable through sensation/perception (αἴσθησις). Attested with certainty for the first time in Epicurus’ Letter to Herodotus in con- nection with the theory of time, the concept, in later doxographers, is already connected to the physical theories of Democritus and Anaxagoras. Il trattato sull'Igiene di Galeno rappresenta la monumentale conclusione di una riflessione sulla salute e sui mezzi per tutelarla che, avviata in alcuni scritti del Corpus Hippocraticum, non aveva mai cessato, nel mondo greco, di suscitare l'interesse di medici e filosofi, riaffermando la vocazione di tutta l'igiene antica a configurarsi, assai più che non l'igiene modernamente intesa, come una complessiva "arte del vivere".
