Phase identification of triphenylene-based discotic monomer and its main chain polymers
1998
Abstract A monomer, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxy triphenylene (HPT) possesses a triphenylene core as a discotic mesogen. Polymers containing this discotic mesogen have been studied using wide-angle X-ray and electron diffraction. HPT is known to show a discotic liquid crystal phase, noted as Dho (h for hexagonal bidimensional lattice, o for ordered molecular spacing in each column). In this paper, however, HPT liquid crystalline phases, heated up from the crystalline state and cooled down from the isotropic state, were characterized in the diameter dimensions. In addition. the diameters of the columns are close to a parameter of two separate crystals. A core orientation was, therefore, pr…
Molecular Mobility in Oriented and Unoriented Membranes Based on Poly[2-(Aziridin-1-yl)ethanol]
2021
Unoriented and oriented membranes based on dendronized polymers and copolymers obtained by chemical modification of poly[2-(aziridin-1-yl) ethanol] (PAZE) with the dendron 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoate were considered. DSC, XRD, CP-MAS NMR and DETA, contribute to characterize the tendency to crystallize, the molecular mobility of the benzyloxy substituent, the dendritic liquid crystalline group and the clearing transition. The orientation of the mesogenic chain somewhat hindered this molecular motion, especially in the full substituted PAZE. The fragility, free volume and thermal expansion coefficients of these membranes near the glass transition are related to the orie…

A kinetic study of the formation of smectic phases in novel liquid crystal ionogens
2013
[EN] A multi-rate non-isothermal kinetic analysis of the isotropic-melt to liquid crystalline phase transition of novel liquid crystalline ionogenic copolymers, LCIs, the 10-(4-methoxyazobenzene-4'-oxy)decyl methacrylate]-co-2-(acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)s, 10-MeOAzB/AMPS, copolymers, has been performed by means of calorimetric experiments. An analytical methodology which includes the study of the phase transition rate parameter, the determination of the activation energies by using Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa models, and the study of the phase transition kinetics by the use of the Avrami theory, has been applied. The formation of the mesophases from the isotropic state o…
Thermal Analysis, Mechanical and Rheological Behaviour of Melt Manufactured Polyethylene/Liquid Crystal Polymer Blends
2011
Modification of properties of conventional thermoplastics with thermotropic liquid crystal polymers, from one hand, allows decrease their viscosities, substantially facilitating processing conditions, and, from another hand, allows increase their exploitation properties. Orientation of the labile structure of liquid crystal polymer in extrusion or injection moulding causes specific reinforcement (so-called self-reinforcement) to occur in the blends containing liquid crystal polymer. Up to now the effect of self-reinforcement is mostly investigated in the blends, containing considerable amount of liquid crystal polymer. In this research the effect of minor amounts of liquid crystalline co-po…
Micellar and lyotropic behavior of three isomeric bola-amphiphiles with pyridinium groups
2010
The micellar and lyotropic phase behavior of three isomeric bola-amphiphiles 1, 2 and 3 based on para-, meta- and ortho-phenylene derivatives with hydrophilic pyridinium headgroups was investigated. The micellar behavior was characterized by surface-tension and conductivity measurements: while the para-substituted amphiphile 1 and the ortho isomer 3 aggregated to micelles, the meta-substituted amphiphile 2 exhibited stepwise, but discontinous self-association. This is explained by the mass-action and phase-separation model. The existence of “premicellar” aggregates and the discontinous aggregation of 2 is evidenced in addition by a difference-spectro-photometric measurement. The low surface…
Tristriazolotriazines with π-Conjugated Segments: Star-Shaped Fluorophors and Discotic Liquid Crystals
2012
C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines substituted with phenylene rings carrying lateral flexible alkoxy side chains were prepared via condensation/ring transformation of cyanuric chloride and tetrazoles. These star-shaped, planar compounds can form broad thermotropic mesophases. Due to the extensive π-conjugation, these compounds are highly emissive and the octupolar donor-acceptor electronic structure results in non-linear optical properties like solvatochromism. Brønstedt acids provoke halochromism of the absorption and of the fluorescence.
“SmartGlass” Obstacles for Dynamic Inducing of Light Scattering in Vision Research Experiments
2017
We describe a technique that allows control of visual stimuli quality through the use of a setup with a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film positioned in the optical pathway of one or both human eyes. Nowadays, PDLC films allow alteration of the resolution and contrast limits of the transmitted light due to continuous change in the light scattering that is obtained by the application of an AC electrical field. In our experimental setup, the use of a wide-aperture up to area of 20 x 15 cm2 PDLC sheet is combined with a flat-screen PC display or with a modified display emission block without its interference filter unit and with an installed individually controllable colored light-em…
Ionic self assembly in the design of fluorinated ionic liquid crystals (ILCs)
2011
Ionic liquid crystals are a class of compounds containing anions and cations, that combine the properties of liquid crystals and ionic liquids[1]. In the conventional design of ionic liquid crystalline compounds, an ionic core is connected with mesogenic groups via chemical covalent bonding . Alternatively, in ionic compounds, strong electrostatic interactions between cation and anion can be used to build up liquid crystalline order at supramolecular level. This general approach, called ionic self-assembly (ISA), allows one to create ionic phases and mesophases with highly organized supramolecular order [2]. In this context, a new series of fluorinated ionic liquids (ILs) and ionic liquid c…
Friction and Heat Transfer in Membrane Distillation Channels: An Experimental Study on Conventional and Novel Spacers
2022
The results of an experimental investigation on pressure drop and heat transfer in spacer-filled plane channels, which are representative of Membrane Distillation units, are presented and discussed. Local and mean heat transfer coefficients were obtained by using Thermochromic Liquid Crystals and Digital Image Processing. The performances of a novel spacer geometry, consisting of spheres that are connected by cylindrical rods, and are hereafter named spheres spacers, were compared with those of more conventional woven and overlapped spacers at equal values of the Reynolds number Re (in the range ~150 to ~2500), the pitch-to-channel height ratio, the flow attack angle and the thermal boundar…
