The first results of the PREDIMED (PREvencion con Dieta MEDiterranea) randomized trial, after 3-month intervention, showed that the Mediterranean Diet (MD), supplemented with either virgin olive oil (VOO) or nuts, reduced systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol and triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations and increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol when compared to a control (low-fat diet) group. Protein and essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiencies may both occur in chronic malnutrition and have common symptoms. To determine the interactions between dietary protein intake and EFA availability, rats were fed purified diets containing 20% or 2% casein and 5% as one of four fats (sunflower, soybean, coconut, or salmon oil) that differed particularly in their n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Fatty livers and the similarity between the skin lesions in kwashiorkor and those described in experimental essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency have led to the hypothesis that protein and EFA deficiencies may both occur in chronic malnutrition. Regulation of lipid flux between liver and adipose tissue during transient hepatic steatosis in carnitine-depleted rats

Rats with carnitine deficiency due to trimethylhydrazinium propionate (mildronate) administered at 80 mg/100 g body weight per day for 10 days developed liver steatosis only upon fasting. This study aimed to determine whether the transient steatosis resulted from triglyceride accumulation due to the amount of fatty acids preserved through impaired fatty acid oxidation and/or from up-regulation of lipid exchange between liver and adipose tissue. A quantitative electron-microscopic study of a linear polyethylene fraction crystallized at different temperatures

Replica and thin-section electron microscopy was performed on a linear polyethylene fraction (Mw = 1.89 × 105, Mn = 1.79 × 10 5) which was either isothermally crystallized or quenched at difference temperatures. The results are numerically analyzed in such a manner so as to give the distribution of the total long spacing and of the crystallite and amorphous thicknesses. A quantitative electron microscopic study of the crystallite structure of molecular weight fractions of linear polyethylene

Utilizing thin-section techniques, transmission electron microscope studies were performed on a series of bulk-crystalized fractions of linear polyethylene covering the range M = 5 × 103−6 × 106. The crystallization conditions were varied from long-time isothermal to rapid quenching. Quantitative analysis could be carried out on such samples crystallized under controlled conditions. The crystallite thickness distributions and long periods are presented in terms of histograms. From these data the degree of crystallinity can be calculated and was found to compare favorably with that from other methods. Shear characterization of CaCO3-filled linear low density polyethylene

Shear properties of CaCO3-filled linear low density polyethylene have been determined over a wide range of filler loading. The viscosity rises with the filler loading especially at low shear rates and a yield value appears for CaCO3-contents larger than 5%. The decrease of the die-swell ratios of the filled samples indicates a reduction of the melt elasticity.

Liquid/Liquid Demixing in the System n-Hexane/Narrowly Distributed Linear Polyethylene

Demixing conditions were measured visually for solutions of three narrowly distributed polyethylene samples (M ranging from 6.5 to 380 kg/mol) in n-hexane up to 500 K and 150 bar. This information yields the critical line for infinite molar mass; i.e., it specifies the pT area within which one is safe from phase separation irrespective of the molar mass of the polymer and of the composition of the mixture. The experimental findings are in good qualitative agreement with the predictions of the Sanchez−Lacombe theory applied without any adjustable parameters. Rheological properties and morphology in LLDPE and PC based blends

Abstract During an interlaboratory project on polymer blends (Technical Working Party-Polymer Blends-VAMAS), the rheological characteristics of some samples of blends of polycarbonate with linear low density polyethylene have been evaluated with the aid of a capillary rheometer. Some morphological observations on the extruded samples have also been performed through SEM and an attempt has been made to correlate the macroscopic and microscopic results.

Flow properties of low density/linear low density polyethylenes

Rheological data have been collected both in shear and non-isothermal elongational flow on three different types of blends, made from one low density polyethylene sample and three linear low density polyethylene samples. In addition to the flow curves, data are presented on the extrudate-swell phenomenon, on the instability arising in capillary flow and on the tensile behavior in the molten state.
