A rare case of sepsis due to Corynebacterium macginleyi from central venous catheter in an elderly woman
2011
Corynebacterium macginleyi is a gram positive rod that causes especially ocular infections: since now only six elderly cases of extraocular infection are described. A 76 years old bedridden woman with a central venous catheter was hospitalized for 10 days of persistent fever. She was treated before with vancomicin and then with imipenem. The clinical conditions improved and the patient was discharged after two weeks of hospitalization. Among recognised risk factors for this infection the advanced age, indwelling devices and immunosuppression seem the most important. On the other hand, the antibiotics of choice are glycopeptides while the association of another antibiotic is recommended in o…
Geldanamycin-induced osteosarcoma cell death is associated with hyperacetylation and loss of mitochondrial pool of heat shock protein 60 (hsp60)
2013
Osteosarcoma is one of the most malignant tumors of childhood and adolescence that is often resistant to standard chemo- and radio-therapy. Geldanamycin and geldanamycin analogs have been recently studied as potential anticancer agents for osteosarcoma treatment. Here, for the first time, we have presented novel anticancer mechanisms of geldanamycin biological activity. Moreover, we demonstrated an association between the effects of geldanamycin on the major heat shock proteins (HSPs) and the overall survival of highly metastatic human osteosarcoma 143B cells. We demonstrated that the treatment of 143B cells with geldanamycin caused a subsequent upregulation of cytoplasmic Hsp90 and Hsp70 w…
Laser capture microdissection and genetic analysis of carbon-labeled Kupffer cells.
2009
AIM: To develop a method of labeling and micro-dissecting mouse Kupffer cells within an extraordinarily short period of time using laser capture microdissection (LCM). METHODS: Tissues are complex structures comprised of a heterogeneous population of interconnected cells. LCM offers a method of isolating a single cell type from specific regions of a tissue section. LCM is an essential approach used in conjunction with molecular analysis to study the functional interaction of cells in their native tissue environment. The process of labeling and acquiring cells by LCM prior to mRNA isolation can be elaborate, thereby subjecting the RNA to considerable degradation. Kupffer cell labeling is ach…
Immediate and long-term microshear bond strength of resin-based cements to core build-up materials
2021
Background To evaluate the microshear bond strength (μ-SBS) between resin-based cements and core build-up materials after water storage. Material and methods Cylinders (1x1 mm) of conventional dual-cure resin cement (RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE), universal dual-cure resin cement (RelyX Ultimate, 3M ESPE) or self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) were adhered to disks (6x2 mm) made with commercial core build-up materials (Bis-Core, Bisco or LuxaCore Z, DMG) or conventional nanocomposite resin (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE). The specimens (n=10) were submitted to μ-SBS test using a universal testing machine and fracture pattern analysis at 48 hours or after 9 months of water storage. The data wer…
Bond strength according to the moment of fiber post cutting fixed with self-adhesive cement to the root dentin
2021
Background The fiber posts require a cut in the coronal portion to adjust it to the available clinical space. The cutting of posts cemented may generate tension via bur vibrations of drill on the bonding interface, with the possibility of decreasing the bond strength. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate if the moment of cutting the fiber posts has an effect on its bond strength when fixed with self-adhesive resin cement. Material and methods Thirty-six bovine teeth were randomly divided into three groups after endodontic treatment and post space preparation (n = 12): IAC- the fiber posts were cutting immediately after cementation; ACR - the fiber posts were cutting after coronal reconstructi…
Bond strength evaluation of the veneering-core ceramics bonds.
2009
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the bond of veneering porcelain to a ceramic core in bilayered ceramics was similar to that of the metal ceramic control of well known behaviour. Six groups of nine specimens each were fabricated, whose dimensions were 15 mm long and 8 mm in diameter at the core, and 2 mm long and 8 mm in diameter for the veneer. The groups were GR. 1 (control group): CrNi alloy/d.SIGN (Ivoclar), GR. 2: IPS e.maxPress/IPS e.maxCeram (Ivoclar), GR. 3: IPS e.maxZirCad/ IPS e.maxZirPress (Ivoclar), GR. 4: IPS e.maxZirCad/IPS e.maxCeram (Ivoclar), GR. 5: Lava Frame (3M ESPE)/ Lava Ceram (3M ESPE) and GR. 6: Lava Frame (3M ESPE)/IPS e.maxCeram (Ivoclar). A shear…
Effects of femtosecond laser and other surface treatments on the bond strength of metallic and ceramic orthodontic brackets to zirconia.
2017
Femtosecond laser has been proposed as a method for conditioning zirconia surfaces to boost bond strength. However, metallic or ceramic bracket bonding to femtosecond lasertreated zirconia surfaces has not been tested. This study compared the effects of four conditioning techniques, including femtosecond laser irradiation, on shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic and ceramic brackets to zirconia.Three hundred zirconia plates were divided into five groups: 1) control (C); 2) sandblasting (APA); 3) silica coating and silane (SC); 4) femtosecond laser (FS); 5) sandblasting followed by femtosecond laser (APA+SC). A thermal imaging camera measured temperature changes in the zirconia during irrad…
Inflammatory cytokines decrease viability and alter ganglioside profile in retinal pigment epithelium cells
2013
Purpose Early stages of Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are characterized by dysfunction and degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, which participate in the death of the overlying photoreceptors ultimately leading to loss of vision. Gangliosides (GG) make a wide and heterogeneous family of sialic-acid-containing glycosphingolipids, composed of a sugar chain branched on a ceramide. They are major components of cellular membranes, particularly abundant in the brain and nervous tissue, including retina. While their developmental and neuroprotective actions have been demonstrated, their precise role in retina’s function and its pathologies is still poorly understood.…

Macchina del fango e demonizzazione dell’avversario. Sulla nozione di diabole nella retorica greca.
2014
The topic of this paper is the rhetorical notion of diabole: a charge that attempts to cast the opponent in a negative light in order to create a negative prejudice in the audience. It is a rhetorical strategy similar to what is currently called a “character assassination” (in Italian “macchina del fango”), a strategy aimed at discrediting and vilifying the adversary using any means. Therefore, it is a phenomenon that involves the important question concerning the role of ethos in the persuasive process. The paper focuses on a particularly insidious aspect of diabole: its use as a form of counterattack. This means that diabole can be dangerous not only when it is used to discredit or vilify…
