Removing krypton from xenon by cryogenic distillation to the ppq level

The XENON1T experiment aims for the direct detection of dark matter in a detector filled with 3.3 tons of liquid xenon. In order to achieve the desired sensitivity, the background induced by radioactive decays inside the detector has to be sufficiently low. One major contributor is the β-emitter 85Kr which is present in the xenon. For XENON1T a concentration of natural krypton in xenon natKr/Xe<200ppq (parts per quadrillion, 1ppq=10-15mol/mol) is required. Microscopic investigations of homogeneous nucleation in charged sphere suspensions.

We studied the homogeneous nucleation kinetics of an aqueous suspension of charged colloidal spheres under de-ionized conditions. Samples of equilibrium crystalline structure were shear molten and the metastable melt left to solidify after cessation of shear. At low particle number densities n, corresponding to low metastability of the melt, nucleation was monitored directly via video microscopy. Ion-induced reduction of dislocation mobility in LiF crystals irradiated with swift heavy (U) and light (Ni) ions of a specific energy of 11 MeV per nucleon at fluences between 106 and 1011 ions/cm2 was studied. The arm length of dislocation rosettes produced by indentation on (100) irradiated surface was measured. It has been found that in the case of heavy ions the threshold fluence (106 ions/cm2) for impeding of dislocation arms is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that for light ions. The results indicate that ion-induced defect aggregates play the dominating role in the impeding of dislocations. 2,4,6-Triphenylpyrylium ion immobilized inside the supercages of zeolite Y enhances by 1-2 orders of magnitude the response of electrochemical oxidation of dopamine in neutral aqueous media accompanied by a remarkable inhibition of post-electron-transfer reactions. The negative charge of the zeolite framework in which the 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium ion is incorporated blocks the electrochemical oxidation of the negative ascorbate ion, enabling the determination of micromolar concentrations of dopamine in the presence of a large excess (10(3)-10(4) times) of ascorbate in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). Enhanced diffraction of light in GaAs microcavities

We theoretically analyze the diffraction of light by gratings that are photogenerated in Fabry–Perot microcavities. The coupled-wave theory of volume gratings is combined with appropriate boundary conditions to yield expressions for the diffraction efficiency. Multiple round trips within the cavity are seen to increase the effective grating thickness and therefore the efficiency. Numerical calculations specific to GaAs microcavities show that the diffraction efficiency can be enhanced by more than 2 orders of magnitude at the resonant wavelengths.

Deeply bound pionic states with the (? ?,?) reaction

We study the reactionΣ− +A→Λ + (Aπ−) with the π− bound in the nucleus, as a means of producing deeply bound pionic states in nuclei, so far unobserved. The reaction is similar to the (n, p) reaction but, because of theΣ−, Λ mass difference, it allows the reaction to occur with smaller momentum transfer, thus increasing the transition probability and reducing the effects of distortion. The ratios of signal to background are one to two orders of magnitude better than in the (n, p) reaction.

Non-Monotonic Concentration Dependence of the Electro-Phoretic Mobility of Charged Spheres in Realistic Salt Free Suspensions

Using super-heterodyne Doppler velocimetry with multiple scattering correction, we extend the opti-cally accessible range of concentrations in experiments on colloidal electro-kinetics. We here meas-ured the electro-phoretic mobility and the DC conductivity of aqueous charged sphere suspensions covering about three orders of magnitude in particle concentrations and transmissions as low as 40%. The extended concentration range for the first time allows the demonstration of a non-monotonic con-centration dependence of the mobility for a single particle species. The thin and medium filters of the EPIC camera on-board XMM-Newton: measured performance after more than 15 years of operation

After more than 15 years of operation of the EPIC camera on board the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory, we have reviewed the status of its Thin and Medium filters. We have selected a set of Thin and Medium back-up filters among those still available in the EPIC consortium and have started a program to investigate their status by different laboratory measurements including: UV/VIS transmission, Raman scattering, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Atomic Force Microscopy. Characterization of a cryogenic ion guide at IGISOL

A small volume cryogenic ion guide has been characterized at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, as a prototype to verify whether there are any major obstacles to the use of high-density cryogenic helium gas for the stopping and extraction of high-energy ions from a large volume cryogenic ion catcher. The expected temperature scaling of the mass flow through the ion guide has been confirmed, showing that for the same helium density, the differential pumping requirements are less stringent for cryogenic operation. At 90 K a clear reduction in the mass-analyzed impurities is achieved, although lower temperatures are required to freeze out oxygen and nitrogen. This is supported by the reduction in…
