Microstructure and property of titanium heterogeneous laser welding

2015

International audience; Dissimilar welding has been investigated for three different couples of titanium alloys: α/α+β, α/β and α+ββp. Plates of 100 x 60 x 1.6 or 1.8 mm were welded with a Yb: YAG laser. Tensile tests show that the properties of the dissimilar welded specimens were generally controlled by Those of the weakest material except for the α+β/β where the ultimate tensile strength was approximately equal to the average value of both materials. In every case, the welding sample elongation was found to be smaller than that of the base metals. The rupture took place away from the bead and was found to be always located in the alloy having the lowest mechanical properties. Nevertheles…

Experimental investigation and multi-scale modelling of the behavior of mechanically activated metallic powders : from binary systems to High Entropy…

2021

Generally, metal alloys consist of a main element associated with other elements present in smaller quantities such as iron, nickel, aluminum or copper alloys. The precise composition of an alloy is adjusted according to the required performance: high temperature behavior, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, durability ... In 2004, a Taiwanese scientist, JW Yeh, had the idea of making an alloy base of several elements, at least 5, whose composition in the alloy varies between 5% and 30% at. Yeh invented the high entropy alloy (HEA). Mixed on a microscopic scale, the metals form a remarkably stable solid solution. The explanation is thermodynamic. An alloy is all the more stable as …

Iron metallurgy, political economy and social change during the first millennium BC in eastern Iberia

2020

Thermoelectric effects on electrically conducting particles in liquid metal

2015

International audience; The present paper deals with the thermoelectric effect on a solid electrically conducting particle immersed in a liquid metal under a temperature gradient. Superimposition of a static magnetic field induces thermoelectric magnetic (TEM) forces both in the solid and in the liquid. Considering a simple spherical particle, the electric current density and the corresponding forces can be calculated analytically. Two cases are considered according to the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the temperature gradient. The corresponding flow fields around the particle are calculated in both cases. Grain motion is analyzed in the light of in-situ experiments perf…

Permanent magnet centrifugal pump for liquid aluminium stirring

2016

In liquid aluminium processing, it is important to ensure continuous mixing of the molten metal to ensure temperature and composition homogeneity, and to improve degassing of the metal. Aluminium and its alloys are often processed in special degassing chambers after preparation in order to avoid segregation and to improve material structure, and to avoid gas pores. This extra step increases material costs and may cause material contamination. In this article, we present the idea to use centrifugal permanent magnet stirrer to induce liquid aluminium motion through thick furnace wall by creating high-speed local liquid metal jet. Analytical estimation, numerical modelling and experimental tes…

Permanent magnet dipole stirrer for aluminium furnaces

2018

Use of permanent magnet systems for metallurgical applications have been proposed before. We have continued development of such systems by investigation use of single magnetic dipole which is realized as permanent magnet cylinder. Magnet is magnetized orthogonal to its axis and has been mounted to the side of the liquid metal reservoir. System first was modelled using small scale experiment with galinstan melt. Velocity distributions and flow patterns in reservoir using Ultrasound Doppler Anemometer were acquired and will be presented here. Additionally, numerical model using Comsol and Cenos modelling software were developed alongside analytical, non-dimensional estimation calculations. Ex…

Numerical and experimental study of liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets

2018

In this work, we study liquid gallium stirring by rotating permanent magnets. We demonstrate possibility of easily creating different flow patterns by rotating permanent magnets, which can be industrially important for controlling heat and mass transfer processes in the system. Unlike the typical approach of simulating magnet rotation as a transient problem and time-averaging the Lorentz forces, we solve the magnet rotation as a harmonic (frequency domain) problem, which leads to forces equal to time-averaged ones and decreases the simulation time considerably. Numerical results are validated using qualitative flow structure results from the neutron radiography visualization of tracer parti…

Correlation between milling parameters and microstructure characteristics of nanocrystalline copper powder prepared via a high energy planetary ball …

2007

The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. It is shown that the change of microstructure characteristics of as-milled Cu powder versus the ball milling conditions (under constant time of the ball milling) depend on only some energy parameters of the milling, for example, average size of crystallite is uniquely defined by energy of the shock, whereas the portion of edge and screw compo…
